Has CCP said anything about adding an automatic skill queue to the game, so if I am away on Holiday or something the next skill in line will be automaticaly trained?
And if they have not, would it not be good to have one?

This has been discussed a million times, and CCP has stated that they will never introduce such a feature.
They actually want people to play the game you know

You mean log in for 2 mins every 5 hours, cos thats all most people do.
Get out of bed, boot up pc, log on, change skill, logg off, switch off, Go to work. repeat infendum

You know that after a certain point skills take at least 2-3 days, while the most time-extensive ones - more than 3 weeks, so a queue becomes kinda useless in that situation. --------------- VIP member of the [23] |

Its a great idea, but CCP won't do it. They want you to have to do in manually.

I'd have to say, as one of the "old-timers" that I'd be in favor of having at the least a single-length queue. I'm not sure I understand why CCP is so against it. People logging in to change their skills only aren't likely to do anything else--believe me, I know after doing that for quite a while. The only thing that makes sense is that it helps make it more difficult for character-sellers, but even that I don't really care about.
Having a single-length queue would seem to not make it all that much easier for the character-sellers, and it would solve that really annoying aspect of having to login at a single point of the day to switch to a new skill. This is true whether you're playing or just training. And if you're playing, how many times have you missed the notification because you were busy or stepped away for a minute? Or were delayed and couldn't get to your computer? Or just plain forgot?
And it still forces you to login just about as often. I would almost always just login sometime after a skill finishes to set the next one, and not try to use it to halve my logins.

I belive the problem lies within the way the server keep track of skill training of individual characters. It just keep track of when you started a skill and how many points you have left, and when you log on it calculates your process. The server doesn't know if a skill has finished while you were online until you actually log on (imagine keeping track of 70,000 accounts even while they're offline instead of just storing a digit in a database).
But I understand that this way makes it kind of hard for new players, only having some skills that take 1-4 hours to choose from when you're going to bed or to work for 10 hours poses a bit of a problem for them.

That's why every new player should have a well-defined schedule of training, and some "extra-long" skills that can be started if you're not sure you can make it. It's also useful for older players so you dont end up with a lot of skills that arent useful to you. --------------- VIP member of the [23] |

No matter how well you schedule things, the point is that you end up having to plan your life and your online time such that at 8:52:46 PM you need to start training a new skill. While it becomes less frequent as you train longer skills, it doesn't change that fact. In fact, many times I've been playing the game when the time came, and missed the notification.
Some might say, this is just part of the game. I guess I'd counter with "Let's have weapons and modules not autofire." It all just comes down to ease of use. A single-length queue just gives you the ability to control your gaming time better, and concentrate on the game, not the mechanics.

Not really. Even for 30 days skills they won't necessarily end when you can switch skills, which means, log in, compute when the skill ends, compare to your available playtime, change skill the day before so only a few hours training left, switch back the day after, switch again to new skill *yawns* very fun

So what's the difference ? atm the server has to check one number, if you could have a queue of 1 extra skill, the server has to check 2 numbers (if the first one is finished, calculate how far the second skill is). No need to keep track of the accounts when somebody is offline. So for the server it wouldn't change much.

I would like the ability to train a skill to a specific level, e.g.
Right click skill book, train to level 1, 2 or 3.
In fact I wouldn't mind if they limited it to a maximum of level 3, level 4 and 5 normally take days anyway.
I had the problem this morning, I need to train Minmatar Cruiser from lvl0 to lvl2 to fly my Ashimmu, except I'm at work all day and can't change the skill. So I'm training mechanic to lvl5 just because it takes a long time.
So instead being able to fly my Ashimmu this evening, I need to wait a few more days to fit the skills in .

That only makes a difference when you're already logged in, at which point CCP probably presumes that queueing is largely redundant as there's a flashing warning icon. The other problem with that approach is that if you do only allow queueing when logged in it just encourages everyone to leave their accounts logged in all the time which is a PITA, generates unnecessary server load and results in inaccurate playercount figures.

i'd be happy if they made a way to change skills thru the web, even if there was a 5 - 10min delay or if they made it so it basicly automaticly continued on to the next skill in that same line(ie cruiser 2 to 3, or mechanic 3 to 4) but wouldn't go on to something new if something completed 5 |

Until you realise you want to do something different, then you have to completely change your queue :) (Been there, done that myself :D)

In newish to the game and I dont have any problems with this(yet) but is there any reason why this couldnt be a skill?
Maybe a Req is all adv learning skills to lvl4? lvl 1, can train current skill upto lvl2 lvl 2, can train current skill upto lvl3 lvl 3, can train current skill upto lvl4 lvl 4, can train current skill upto lvl5 lvl 5, can train skill upto lvl5, once current skill has finished.

DON'T scare me, I spent like 6 hrs with FFET-ECM trying to get that plan down as low as freakin possible actually most of it is stuff that will cross over anyway.. after gall cruiser 5(so I can fly my ishtars) and gall BS 4(5 is in the to be ordered) I have queued up the rest of Drone Interface upto 5, the rest of the cap skills, a crap load of gunnery, rest of the adv learning skills to 4(minus charisma ofc), hull upgrades to 5, repair systems 5, ect... |

Edited by: Lord WarATron on 20/09/2005 14:50:15 Skill queues can never happen without modifying how the sever currently tracks skills. All the server does is look at your current skillpoints and time when you start training and when you log on, your client tells the server that the skills is done, assuming the appripriate time is done.
It is for this reason that you have to stop training when putting in implants, or even when you are podded with a +5 implant, it still carries on as though you have the implant installed until the skill is finished or you change training skills.
The only compromise that I would suggest is that CCP have the skill carry on training once trained. I.E Train up Gunnery 2, and as soon as it is done, it automatically goes to gunnery 3 etc.
This way would require little coding and hassels, since there is no new information that the server would have to store.

I think this would be a good compromise if the queue can't happen.
The only problem I really have is those 4-6 hour skills that take longer than one play session and shorter than one sleep/work session to complete. As a fairly new player a lot of my important skills are in that range so it would be nice to be able to train them without worrying about wasting points. Wasting a couple hours here and there isn't a huge deal, but I'd prefer not to if I can avoid it.

The "continue training" option you list above is probably the easiset implementation.
Another one that would have a low load on the servers is simply to note in a database table(if a person has queued skills) when skill training is done. Since this is a static number, it should be easy enough to do and a single thread checking this simple table won't cost too much computing power.
Or even just have it check every 10-30 minutes and people are at risk over loosing that much time between "automated switches". That way, people who don't rely on the queue still have a small advantage.
And lastly, if that can't be done, I'd like switching skills by sending an SMS. Let me predifine a telephone number that the SMS has to come from and then I can do it anytime from anywhere myself

I don't know about queing, but IMHO I'd like to see the Character Sheet on this site have the ability for players to change/start skills on it. I'd be able to change or start new skills with my phone then.

That's a great idea. Another idea is being able to pay CCP only $5 a month to be able to log into the site to keep training skills, BUT not be able to log in via the client. That way people who want to train skills while they take a break from teh game can.
I'm gonna get bored of Eve soon again for the second time and quit again. Therefore CCP makes no money and my skills do nothing. I can see paying them $5 a month to keep my skills going in case I decide to play again. But can I see $12-$15 a month to keep skills training? NO.

Well normal people must earn money to be able to pay for the game. I would like to know what you are doing if not going to school/work.
I agree with others that this system is really stupid. Having to count time and not to be able to train skills you need just because the time for them is too short is bad. I especially hate those 5 - 8 hours skills.
