What would you say?
Couple of my real life friends we're talking about starting in Eve and asked if I'd recommend it. Honestly, I didn't know what to say.
All I could think of was the divide that comes with starting such an old game. Now I realize I'm probably wrong but the divide does seem huge. A few people control alliances that in turn control mass amounts of wealth and chances. Sure some of them fall but mostly they just seem to rename themselves and start over.
Obviously, like with any game. You take the forums with a pinch of salt. Especially when so many people create alts to back up an opinion. Still, a lot of what you read on the Eve forums is pretty negative. Things taking years to fix, being rushed out and so forth. The bitching about bots, Super's nerf. etc.
So what is it actually like starting from scratch now?
Would you recommend it?
All I could really say was "What not play the trial and see what you think?". Bit of a weak answer, but the best I could come up with.

I recommended it to some of my friends and they even started playing. I gave them a buddyinvite and a plex so they had a full account for free for 21days + one month.
None of them stayed.
Why? They stayed in an NPC-corp and ran missions.
I told them not to do that and get involved in some pvp/lowsec/other stuff. In the end I think it's a niche game and PvE is very underdevelopped.
Imo the tutorials could do much better. Currently they only teach you (very) basic game mechanics and after that you are on your own in space.
At the end of the tutorials you should be given lots of info about your options in new Eden. Fix FW ! |

I really dont know cause it took me the better part of a year to really get to where I enjoy the game, then four more to get into a position to do what I want to lol (there were many vacations in there by the way - except the first year part)

I stick with the truth, it's a sandbox and there's no game quite like it. There's a daunting amount of freedom, you can do practically anything you can dream up, people will scam you and it can all be very confusing. But if you have a goal, and you find some like-minded people, you'll never look back.
The question of a "new player gap" always come up, and eve's probably got one of the smallest gaps - a 2 week old character can accomplish some incredible things, especially if they make some friends. -- Beep Beep Imma Jeep. |

I've always though that one of the fundamental problems with EVE (that is rarely brought up) is the very long training times. It takes ALOT of time and effort to get a character to a "fun to play" level, and that makes EVE a game that only a minority can ever learn to enjoy. Sure you can spend alot of real money and buy a 6 year old character, but that is something a very few would do.
So my answer to the OP would be to explain this to your friend and point him to the Evelopedia and other sources of information to read, before he gets too involved. It never hurts to make a trial account though. Features & Ideas Discussion: Agent Finder, Black Holes Needs a banner here.. |

Lacks a lot of Casual Fun, Sometimes it is boring, Takes a Long Time to reach the Middle of the Pack even with a Plan and Very Complicated to Learn.
That said, Find your Niche and it is great fun. The Community is excellent, the Game is very Deep and there is a lot to do. The Game has a ton of Unique Content you will not find in other MMO's and Career Paths are intricate and involved. One Server where you can make your mark as anything from a leader of your own Empire, Mercenary, Notorious Con Man or Industrial Mogul. These are not Character classes, you can be them just by Deciding to do it and putting in the grunt work. Reputation and Action Matter more then anything else here.
Just some of the stuff involved.
Hundreds of Missions in 5 different Lvls Wormhole Raids Incursion Raids Galaxy Wide Market Trading Moving Hundreds of Billions an Hour. Wars, Piracy and Conquest in a free and open World. Mining and Construction. Exploration and Complexes. Thousands of Star Systems Millions of Km Across open to you. Everything you and everyone else owns can be lost. Factions are meaningless, you must make relationships with people to have allies.
The Game is Difficult but Amazing.
Just two things to keep in mind. If a Someone you do not know can kill you they will. Never trust anyone with your money and read everything carefully, Cons and Scams are Legal and Common. No matter how nice and reassuring they are do not trust them with anything you aren't willing to loose.
A good Mantra before you do anything at all is to look at your assets involved in anything you are about to do and say "They are already gone". If you can accept the loss and think the potential for reward is good enough then go for it.
So wanna give it a go? |

It is difficult and frustrating at first, and many things are broken.
It is the only MMO that has kept my attention for more than a few hours.

I'd recommend the game in general but would emphasize that starting to play now is risky.
If he is fine with playing with a time horizon of a few months I'd say go ahead but if he thinks long-term and doesn't like to take risks i'd recommend to wait until the DUST settles (i.e. until it becomes clear how CCP will react to the first 2-3 months of DUST sales). |

My honest option:
Well to be frank I won't even try. My friends generally don't like computer games all too much and they don't really have time to waste time on staring at mining lasers for hours, doing the same missions all over and over or look for fights for hours. Most won't like the fact that you're basically a picture and not an interactive character either.
Most people I know have busy lives, some have children and they'd rather play games where they can logon, play with their friends for a while and logoff. A few may join when I'll play GW2 (some played GW1 too) but EVE is far too time consuming for them, they'd feel it's an extra job, not a lighthearted fun hobby with a lot of options for some active teamwork. |

Starting from scratch is hard but it was like this 2007 too.
Would I recommend it? Every time it may not be for everybody but it is still a fricking awesome game. The amount of options the depth of gameplay is in my knowledge unrivaled by any other MMO out there. It has its falws (The DOOR anyone?) but still it is unrivaled. There is no other game that can rival Eve (tried perpetuum didn'T like it... wtf an eve clone without tracking :( ). You will know after 2-3 weeks if you like it, and if you do it you might quit but you will always come back. |

Eve was/still is a very impressive game. It's unique and original in the sense that I don't think there is another "Sandbox" style MMO out there. Everything that is in the game is what you have all created. The ships and other bits and pieces CCP provide. All of the alliances/ politics/ wars etc is a product of everyones imagination. And what a world it provided.
I haven't played for a long time, but when I used to play I had immense fun. I would recommend this game to a friend so they might convince me to play again =)
In all reality though this is a niche game and most people prefer the more linear style of game. This isn't one you can dip in and out of if you have a free 30minutes. |

for me the "long" training time was ... letting Frigates 3 train overnight (WHILE I WASN'T PLAYING o_O) so that the next day I could fly a Tristan, and then getting up early enough in the morning so I could swap over to another 10+ hour skill so I wouldn't waste the entire day with nothing training...
Then the next day, getting said new uber shield/armour/hull tanked Tristan blown to hell because I didn't know a damn thing about how to properly tank a ship... oh, it was fun alright . Especially the part where the guy who blew me to hell told me what I did wrong and what I should do to not have that happen next time...
everything after that has been "eh, it takes time" ... but I've never really felt held back by the time (i.e. feeling that a day or a week was "too damn long" to get my next shiny) ... the time factor has usually saved me from grave errors, as I can read up on good fittings and stuff... |

AAAnd i quote (myself) ...
EvE is an ******* game. It's hard. It's not even about fun. It's about work, building yourself up and getting the reward for it, which makes it awesome on one hand and angers you to death on the other, when you lose something you've worked for all week long.
No other game can compete with this one, because EvE is unique.
You either harden up ... or go back to WoW.
Why we don't have subscription numbers like WoW ? Because most people are soft, weak and whiny when they have to cope with pain and losses.
We EvE players are elitists for a reason. |

Their wait in Arkonor probably wouldn't be worth crap. Considering that a most rocks have a higher density of a human, I'll just say conservatively that Arknonor has about the same (That's because you want the most m3 per weight). So that means for every 1kg your friend weighs... you would have 0.001 m3 of ore... So the avg person being around 70 or 80kg... you would end up with around 0.07m3... or in otherwords... much less than the 16m3 needed for just 1 piece of ore and much much less than the 3200m3 needed for refining.
I believe a better metaphor would be more along the lines of .... worth his weight in zydrine... or some other expensive material that could be analogous to our gold or diamonds. |

I say much of what everyone else has said already in this thread. But I also tell my friends that eve is for people who are intelligent, willing to figure things out on their own, willing to ask questions but make their own decisions, people who are not afraid of making mistakes, and most importantly, NEVER take anything that happens in the game personally. That Eve can be as boring or as intense as YOU choose it to be, that it is YOUR game to play, and although tons of people will give you advice and information, ultimately nobody is going to hold your hand.
I then point them to the Clear Skies movies and tell them to watch those first (ok, actually they all ended up watching the movies while downloading the client usually by then!) - and yes, I explain that only the space scenes are from Eve.
Sometime during their first week of playing, I bring them into low sec and get them over their first death Some decide to carebear it nearly exclusively after that, others are completely hooked on the rush and pursue PVP, some go for a mix of both... but so far, every last one of my friends I've brought into Eve are still playing Eve.

Awesome game, most in-depth, risk vs reward balanced, long term investment game. You can be casual and hardcore both, or be one and then the other, without losing much in terms of progress against other player. New players can be useful even with or against older ones.
All that said, hate the company that runs it, and what they have become. They are terrible at fixing bugs, balancing content, etc. heavy handed nerfs without care to what it does to the people affected by them, and leaving overpowered stuff overpowered for years at a time.
So yeah, awesome game, terrible company. |

Yotah wrote:Tell your friends EVE is VERY PvP centered and if they mainly like PvE and only occasionally do PvP, then EVE is not the game for them. I would not say this is true. EVE has a lot more PvE Content then a lot of PvE Centered Games and offers more protection then a lot of other MMO's.
If you look at a list of PvE Based Content it is pretty competitive with almost any MMO.
Missions Quest Chains(Arcs) DED Complexes Escalation Complexes Anomelies Exploration Sites Hauling Missions Sleeper Sites Incursions Raids
That right there is 4 times as much as any MMO that is not AAA. Thats not even counting all of the stuff that is non combat PvP. Such as jobs which intersect heavily with the Market but most outside of EVE would not consider.
Mining and Harvesting Production Trading
This we know to be PvP because the lack of NPC buy orders but someone from another game would say "what do you mean your Auction House is PvP?" I still marvel at the scale of our Market System.
Anyway PvP is a big part of this game. Competition is as major an undertone as Ship to Ship Combat. But for direct PvE and PvE with limited competition EVE does not have it bad.
Not to say you should not take the time every once and a while to shoot someone. Ship Cobat PvP is a really big part of EVE. But as an MMO EVE has quite a lot for everyone.

This.
Backed up by a publisher which actively encourages this behaviour, turns a blind eye to meta gaming, and is powerless to make any kind of impression on botting and RMT.
I wouldn't be much of a friend to recommend this to them.
They would be better off giving me -ú15 per month to give them glimmer of what could have been, whilst I repeatedly kick them in the balls (or vagina... lets not be sexist here). Then whilst there lying on the ground wheeping from the pain, I would then take a picture and post this online to everyone to show them how pathetic they are being, ensuring to tell them to "give me your stuff, on your way out".
it's the best analogy of this game and it's community, as well it's publishers, I can think of.

Didn't read most of the posts, but what I say when talking to people about it is that it's a niche game, and not for everybody, but if you try it and like it, it only gets better. I then explain that it's not a theme park MMO like WoW is, and that it's open ended where people can do what they want, and it's only limited by game mechanics and their imaginations. Then I tell them how I've done null sec fleet fights, produced and ran drugs for a drug cartel (boosters), and have been a ruthless pirate. If they're interested, I show them around and if they like it, they'll stay, but since it is a niche game, it's not for everyone and they shouldn't feel compelled to stay. |

Trying to get a RL friend into the game. He likes the stories I tell about eve. He has played maybe 15 hrs in the past 3 months of subbing (ideal mmo customer?) I am not sure he will stay.
His main complaint is the UI. Tons of bad design choices, too many windows, Terrible error messages such as "the fleet member is not in system" when he tries to warp to me when I am docked, for example.
Then again it might not be his niche. And he is a mac user so is a bit when it comes to game UI, but still its a problem CCP should look into.
Other than UI issues, its all about whether you enjoy what makes EVE different or not. I have known people who saw eve and thought "Finally, what I have been looking for!" I have seen EVE vets say the same thing about WoW.
I think if a complex, openworld-sandbox-openPVP-SciFi-MMO appeals, you will like EVE whether you started this year or 5 years ago. |

As a player who got two of his IRL friend to join recently I think the biggest problem is explanation. This game is great for anyone who likes PVP and who is a real capitalist. With the right explanation and some start up capital it can be pretty easy to get people to play.
Although the best advertising I did so far was me starting to play then saying, "No, you wouldn't like it. It has a huge learning curve and takes forever to train."

Having just had 4 friends join in the past 6 months i have a bit of knowledge on this. Of the 4, 1 is a real gamer. He is the only one left. Eve is a hard game, its a great game but if you are looking for a great npc experiance you should go to wow or play console games. As much as the forum carebears will hate this, eve is a pvp game. That being said, if you have no isk it hard to pvp and actually be of value.
So, if they are truely gamers they will get into eve and enjoy it. If they are casual gamers they will hate it. |

I think I'd say that EVE is not for everyone. Some hate it, some like it.
Most of the people I invited like it quite a lot. Its complex, it is NOT just PVP, but you can meet with PVP or other unfortunate ends any time. It is about real loss, not respawning, which makes it more serious and gives more kicks.
Some go back to other games from time to time, because of WiS not being implemented and sitting in a hamster cage not being inspiring. But they also return, because the spaceship part kicks a$$ and we have fun flying together.
EVE is a good MMO for a group, it is not much fun solo, usually. |

For me it's the way you can set up a complete surprise. In any other game you see a class and you know what they will be doing. With ships of course there are optimal setups for ships and and some more leftfield ones. Occasionally you will see a completely bizarre fit. A particular favourite of mine would have to be an old ECM myrmidon. (Yes you read that right) I was learning basic pvp ( well over a year ago now) and was very open minded. I managed to take on a drake and a brutix at the same time. Killed the brutix while jamming the drake and then escape the drake when I realised this frankenstein fit was not gonna break the tank.
Now it wouldn't work again in a month of sundays but that one time it did and while it was the pvp equivalent of flailing your arms and hoping to kill something, and to an outsider would have looked ridiculous, I can say it was a lot of fun.
Had a chat with the two lads and had a laugh about it and we went on our merry. I believe CCP calls this emergent gameplay. I call it pure chance but the result is the same. So that's my addition. The freedom to be ridiculous. |

TL;DR: Would i recommend EVE Online to a real life friend?
Well, since it's not about what you say, it's about what you do: I never asked any of my rl friends to join me in EVE Online. /TL;DR
If it wasn't for the people i played with, i would never have stayed in this game longer then 2 months.
I cba to run missions, i get sick and tired of them after running a couple, wormholes are a logistical nightmare. Trading was nice occasionally, POS moon/planet reaction stuff is like a second job.
PvP wasn't really my thing either believe it or not, but the people i stuck around with are very good at it and trained me well, i got good at knowing when to fight and not, so i started to like it because i blew up a lot more then i lost, but i never ever went out alone.
Mining was boring, but nice, only because we stuck around on teamspeak and socialized while doing it and it allows you to watch a movie or something on a second screen.
CCP doesn't change this game fast enough, it takes forever for them to acknowledge something is broken and even longer to fix it. And i'm not even sure that CCP apology letter is going to change anything.
Now im 100mil SP trained and have multiple alts, turned into a bitter vet who occasionally reads forums and keeps training characters, but log in only to change my training queue, not sure why.

I've almost sold a few friends on EVE by telling them, "it's like Elite, but with PvP."
I've almost sold a few friends by telling them, "it's a dystopian future where you can carve out as big an empire as your political, economic and military prowess will allow you to!"
I think it would be easier to sell EVE if the UI was a bit prettier and combat looked more like Freespace or Homeworld. Rather than red crosses, have different icons for frigates, destroyers, cruisers, battle-cruisers, battleships, etc.
I suspect it would be easier to sell EVE if the PvE and "solo" aspects of the game included more narration from Aura, more interaction with NPCs (e.g.: Wing-commander style video smack), and the option of having NPCs give you longer term goals than simple missions. Some people want mindless entertainment, and having more mindless pilots in the game could lead to more minions for those folks who desire to lead armies of zombies :)

I have tried to get many of my friends to play this game. its hard. its not so much the gap between the rich and the poor. its the "freedom" concept of it all. its complex, and if you don't play your cards right, you aren't going to do very well.
most people like to play call of duty and WoW where you have one path to walk. shoot people or whatever the hell you do in WoW. eve is different and most people get confused and frustrated, and throw it away, at least in my experience.
when people ask me about eve, i always say that it nothing like you ever played before, its not necessarily easy, but once you get the hang of it its awesome. i usually say something along the lines of the first 6 months sucks. you get scammed, will be poor, have no idea whats going on, have no clue how to fit a ship and will die, and skill training into something decent will take a few months.

I tell them EVE is basically digital crank:
If you try it you're hooked. You'll probably like it. You might not, and that's the worst part. You'll spend endless hours and assloads of cash trying to like it. You'll blow off school, your wife, your kids, and your job for "just five more minutes" trying to get ahead.
You'll say you're gonna quit, you might even actually "quit'. Seriously. You'll mean it every time. Then you'll find yourself in fleet sodomizing some shmuck with a crap tank and laughing hysterically on Teamspeak. At 4 am. You'll have to be in class by 9. You won't care because pvp tremors are even better than 5 cans of Red Bull and a bottle of roofies.
At the end of the day you'll just be trying to get off even more than the last time you played it... and that's the kick in the balls... You'll grow to hate EVE but won't be able to stop yourself.
I'd rather recommend that someone take up base jumping or banging whores bareback in Bangkok. At least you'll know what you're in for right up front. |

I was brought to this game by a RL friend (and fellow tabletop RPG player). His pitch? "I know your playing style, you should try this."
He was right, but in the end I did not follow his path (which at the time would have been a free pass into the old Atlas). I was drawn by Industry and its hidden PvP - the PvP no one talks about. Market PvP in particular held my attention (and still does), as this place gives me a place to 'safely' learn what *not* to do in the RL Market when I retire.
Ironically, my friends no longer play Eve. I continue to play in order to form more friendships, learn more about various parts of the game. I've now settled in with the RP groups here, which I've found to be refreshing (though I'm also a LARP fan, so to each their own).

You see people like this are the material for eve.
Braincells of a EVE player talking to each other: Works? No. Shoot it moar! Still don't works... Take whats left and run.
Form my point, i just tried the trial: Played for one day, got mad at the click where you want to fly and left it alon. 3 months later i was bored and gave it another try, as a noob as i was i went straight to LS and got blown up, i got mad at that and wanted revenge.... and yeah here i am.... 4 years later.... ------------------------------w00t w00t rapetrain------------------------------ |

Honestly? This is what I'd tell them.
It's a unique experience with good style and an incredible PVP system that comes from the harsh losses that can be inflicted on your gains; when EVE is good, it's damn good.
Unfortunately, it's developers spent two years not giving a **** about spaceships and only did an about face when people started unsubscribing en-masse, and we have no idea how long this reversal will last.
If you like what EVE is, feel free to stick around, but don't hold out hope for what EVE Online's space ships could be as a factor for sticking around. If you expect broken things to be fixed expediently, think again. |

Then whilst there lying on the ground wheeping from the pain, I would then take a picture and post this online to everyone to show them how pathetic they are being, ensuring to tell them to "give me your stuff, on your way out". it's the best analogy of this game and it's community, as well it's publishers, I can think of.

The problem I have, is how exactly do I get my friends or family who want to play EVE with me interested enough to stick with the game for a year or two WITHOUT me to be able to fly with me. Let me elaborate.
I'm part of a certain ELITE PVP alliance (this is an alt, ofc), and even players on the lower end of our recruitment scale generally have 25m+ sp, which is probably 18 months to 2 years of training. Not only that, but player skill is actually pretty important, and there are only a few places where one can learn all the necessary skills.
I ran into the issue about a year ago of my Father wanting to try out EVE. I helped him create a character and get started on some newbie missions, and tried to point him in the direction of EVE University, but he never made it that far. When he realized that it would take a very long time to be able to fly with me and my alliance, he pretty much lost hope and stopped playing.
"BUT WAIT" people are gonna say, "You could have joined a different corp that was newbie-friendly!" And that's true. But it also isn't why I play EVE. I spent a great deal of my EVE time training up newbies before I joined said ELITE PVP alliance, and one of the main reasons I joined this alliance is (besides a few old friends), they are competent and skilled, and it is a very rare thing for me to lose a ship because of an FC making a really stupid decision, or a random fleet member screwing up.
But yea, it's kinda left me saying to people "It's a great game, but if you're going to play it to hang out with ME online, we should probably play TF2 or Xbox Live or something else instead, because you can't just jump into EVE and roll with the big dawgs, unless you're gonna spend a lot of RL money on buying PLEX and a new character." |

I decided to start a baby alt of my own to play alongside them. So far two out of the three have decided to stay. The first played for a day before quitting. Time will tell what happens with the other two.
Failing that, I notice starter characters for Winmatar sell fairly well, just like Tengu pilots. So at least it could be future ISK. |

I've been playing about a month. My neighbor would come over and show me youtube videos, talk about space related jokes. I couldn't understand what his problem was and why he played this game at all let alone love it as much as he does. I get it now. I made my account to get it over with and just try this game. I am no longer a trial account. I had to keep going even though I still don't understand almost..everything. I've learned that it's really hard to start this game out with no idea of whats going on. People assume your trolling all the time since the questions you ask sound so simple to general players.
It's confusing to pick out your race, bloodline, user name, and to ask those questions that you will only say.."Oh, I should have figured that out since it's the most obvious" Someone checked out the skills I began with and they were surprised that I knew certain ones and didn't at starting out my caldari race character. So maybe things have changed for character creation over the years? Besides the experienced players that are really good at this game and don't think new players are asking legit questions...people here are really helpful and nice! Eve feels like you're learning a new language at first but once you start it's so much fun and learning more just turns into a adventure. The missions are very boring..a lot of reading in the tutorial. Hard to start out if you are a first person shooter console player and come here to start a game. I don't know much about isk yet but it seems like they don't start you out with much at all. I run out all the time. But I hear about people talking about millions of isk being pocket change. So maybe it is hard to be starting out Eve and selling your unused items for that skill book you require but didn't know about. |
