Are you getting lag? TEST YOUR BANDWIDTH on CNET.COM I have no lag though since I started playing 4 weeks ago.
I think it is because I have a good connection to the internet.
So help me test my theory
TEST YOUR BANDWIDTH on CNET.COM My speed was 4903.8 kbps and not having any lag in EVE.

That is quite stupid as I have a 100mbit connection at work and one of my characters in 00 is lag free, the other in empire is lagged to crap.

Well that's cool, that's why I'm saying to test my theory.
Any one else? I need many people to make sure.
Also Infused, did you actualy test your speeds, it may not be what you think it is.
I play in Empire by the way.

Does yours say about 25500kbs? Cool, so do you get lag then?

That's cool of you, thanks :) I'm reading it. ........... .............. ................ .............
Ok I read it and I guess since latency is the time it takes to respond that could have a lot to do with it.
Hmm I wonder if there is a latency test.
Isn't it in the DOS Windows Prompt, But I forgot, something about "ping"?.

Here is a Latency Testing internet page. Look at bottum of the page
Mine is 1094 Down & 690 up
It shows I'm still doing good.

I often have to work away from home, to pass the time I often play Eve on my laptop, using GPRS as my connection to the internet. By its nature GPRS is slow and laggy.
At the weekends I use my 3Mbit/s cable modem to connect to the interweb. This is fast and non laggy.
When Eve has been lagging recently, on my cable modem connection, the lag effects have been totally different to the lag effects with the GPRS connection.
For instance, when the GPRS is laggy, reloading ammo just takes a long time. But when the server is lagging you get stupid error messages about not being able to load.
So, no, your theory is wrong.

You can also test the latency from your pc to the Eve server very easily.
Bandwidth does not = latency so even though you may have a big pipe and 3-4 Mbps throughput, you can still have very high latency and so you will lag, it also doesn't show if packets are dropped. So you can have a great connection, low latency but if your dropping data packets, you still might get lag.
To test your actual latency, if you have XP go to accessories and open up a command prompt and type:
cd\ hit enter ping 157.157.139.10 hit enter
your pc will ping the Eve server and you'll get your round trip ping time in milliseconds and if you have any packet loss.
157.157.139.10:2600 is the eve server address.

Aye. Despite the uni's ~255mbit connection I'm limited by being on a 10mbit switch.
Yet despite all this my latency feels like it's about 1200ms+. Last year I was on a 100mbit switch and got 4-5mbyte/s transfer speeds. Useful, but I'd prefer a much better ping.

You get no lag because you are not in a laggy area of the Eve universe, simple as that. It's nothing to do with latency or bandwidth, unless yours is particularly bad. Although we all play in the same game, that game is spread over many servers. When player concentration in a certain area gets too high, the servers covering that area get overloaded and you see lag in that area.

You could have 1 Terrabit and you'd lag in a fleetbattle.

You'll probably find that its local side routing that causes the majority of that lag. Do a traceroute or two to your favourite servers and see where the ping packets take the longest.
btw.. if you want to make a longterm study of your connection's latency.
ping -n ipaddy > ping.txt should save your details to a text file for you to browse at a later date, and the -n switch will mean it will do it continuously until you either hit ctrl+break (I think) or ctrl+c or just close the terminal window.

-t is continuous -n (where the n should be followed by a number is to set the number of ping requests.
