 I came across this while sitting in my boring computer class. But I have to ask. Exactly how many extinct or living animals did CCP use to name ships? So far I figured the Moa, which is a extinct bird that once lived in New Zealand, and the Harpy, Merlin class hull, which I can relate to as the Harpagornis. Which is extinct bird which also lived in New Zealand, once the largest Eagle in the world they hunted Moas while the Moas grazed for food in open grasslands. Seems kinda neat, a Harpy pwning a Moa, I most certaintly would expect that.

Harpy Eagles are not yet extinct. There is still a breed indigenous to South and Central America.

I think it's cool, too, how CCP named many of the ships(at least Caldari) after different types of birds of prey.

All Caldari Ship Names are derived from birds name, just type them up in google and voi'la you find some link referring to a bird, be it extinct or not.
and i fyou havent noticed, the other empires also base their ship names on something specific, like all Amarr ship names are based on some god/mythic/faith/whatever stuff,like Revelation for their drad, vengeanec and retribution for their assaulties,
havent'e exactly nailed down what gallante or minmatar base their shipnames on, but by looking at them you can see they are all based on something, many of the minmatar ship names are based on animals, extinct, mythical ancient or whatever, and then mostly predatorial animals, like Jaguar and Wolf, cheetah and so on, or some mystical beasts/monsters like the Cyclone and other ideas and stuff from Norse mythology, like their dread, Naglfar.
think Gallante are using some scientific stuff, not exactly sure, but who cares about them anyways :)

Someone had said before that the typhoon, tempest and cyclone are all british ww2 planes. That might be a good avenue to investigate.

For Minmatar, what I have found is three diffrent types:
1. Blades or other sharp objects (Scimitar, Stiletto, Claw)
2. Animals of prey (Jaguar, Hound, Cheetah)
3. Storms or weather (Typhoon, Cyclone, Tempest)
Any way of linking these three categories together?
Sabretooth Tiger of Doom? 
Or perhaps Fred the Enema cat?

As far as mimnatar goes most of the animals they are named after are extinct. At least in the sence of the games history.
But for naming the ships it seems the larger class battle ships are named after storm clasifacations. The middle classes are named after weapons and the smaller class (t2) are animals. There are many ship that seem to not fit in to that pater such as (t1) frigs and haulers.

k, so there are not "all" birds names/species, but the major majority of caldari ships are derived from birds names :P

What about "Ferox"? As far as I can tell, it's a punk rock band, a type of aloe, and Worcester College's student newspaper.
Oh, and there's "Cannibal Ferox", a 1981 horror movie banned in many countries.

I was looking at that, the only thing I could find on Google were in German or Russian, which don't do me alot of good.
I know the Cormorant is a type of waterfowl. Really odd looking things, but very cool to watch as they hunt, which entails high speed dive bombing of fish.
