I'm pretty sure a ferox is a cat-type predatory animal (lodjur in Swedish).
Edit: no wait, that's lynx. At least I got the 'x' right Edit2: Here is the Ferox. Looks like I was pretty close after all
Edit3: ok, ok... it's a rat, not cat

Amarr names are based on well, very medievial-esque terms and practices. For example, the Tormentor, Punisher, Maller, Armageddon, Exicutioner etc. very menacing.
Gallante names are in latin. Minmatar are based after quick, powerfull, precise, or disastrous things. Caldari are named after mainly birds with some anamials and insects thrown in.

Hmmm, why does that not seem to inspire fear?

Well yeah, there was that, but I was hoping for one actually named the "Snake".
What the hell, if we can get the Imud-Hubrau renamed the "Mushroom", I'd be happy. Because, if you watch closely, the Snake pretty much seems to be a rattlesnake. At least I think it is.

More Caldari ship names from Greek mythology: Manticore, Cerberus, and the two Caldari capital ships, the Charon and the Phoenix (Charon is connected to Cerberus btw: Charon crosses the dead souls over the Styx river, Cerberus watches the gates to the underworld)
And "Titans" comes from greek myth too (although i dont know the particular names for each race) -

lets not forget that Guristas ships are all based on Lizards. Sansha and Blood Raider are based on monsters and things that bump in the night and Angels are based on Gee-Wiz catch phrases.... except maybe the Machariel

Thanks OZ for the bit about the Gallente names. I didn't exactly lie awake thinking "where did the Gallente get their ships names from?" but it was the least clear of the lot and it did bug me a bit.
As for the Ammar well how can you take a race seriously after it comes up with those lofty, religous, imperial, holier-than-thou, watch out for the empire with God behind it names. They think just because the Empire names its ships by sticking a pin in the pages of its stupid Pax Ammaria then its enemies will cringe and run. At least the Minmatars are honest and upfront with the aggresive names. Those imperialist Ammarians can shove their ship names up thier.........
Ahem. Sorry 'bout that. Don't know what came over me there

"Worm", "Gila", and "Rattlesnake". Gila is a lizard...Rattlesnake is a reptile, so close...Worm isn't even close though. It's an annelid I believe, but I'd have to check to be sure.
Originally by: Xavier Cardde Sansha and Blood Raider are based on monsters and things that bump in the night
Sansha's ships have names like "Nightmare", that's certainly something that goes bump in the night...but the Blood Raiders have ships with names like "Ashimmu" and "Bhaalghorn"...I don't recognize them at all.

Oddly enough, the Machariel is the only one I can remember off the top of my head...what are the other ones? Unfortunately, I can't check with EVE-i.com down

Also, "Harpy" has a dual significance. In addition to the Harpy Eagle, the original meaning of "Harpy" was from Greek mythology. Also known as the Furies and the Erinyes, they were half-woman, half-bird creatures.

They're probably all extinct now, it's the 234th century, Earth's probably a ravaged husk of the glorious planet it once was.

That's because it's a were-badger. Harmless fluffy little birdies during the day, that gribble up and go chasing rodents at a full moon.
Fear the badgers!
