I'm a n00b around here but so far so good. This game truly seems like what I may have been seeking. (thanks to MMORPG.COM for the referral) The forums and posts show a lot of intelligence, and helpfulness (even the WOW comparison thread).
I'm 39yrs old and I've been playing video games since Atari 2600 and ColecoVision. The past 15 yrs on the PC, first getting into Sim City (the original on my employers 80268 laptop w/ 16 shades of gray!!!) Then getting into FPS and "online gaming" for the past 5-10 yrs.
I've abstained from subscribing to MMORPGs (except for a brief stint with WWII online) mostly due to my inherent cheapness and not wanting another "entertainment subscription" to add to my TV/Internet/Magazines etc....
Recently I purchased and have been playing Guild Wars for about the past 6 months -- the $0 subscription held alot of appeal.
Do any of you still play Guild Wars?
I quickly reached LvL 20 with a few chars, started to PvP and joined a "pretty good" Guild I saw my Guild advance up the "ladder" it was fun....then BANG it seemed we hit a wall -- both my characters and my guild. The PvE was FAR too short and done. All of the GvG battles are only about the ladder, we got to rank in the top 150, then slid back down to settle around rank 250-300. The pick-up tombs battles are like 8 individual knuckleheads each with his / her own agenda (teamwork in PUGs is nearly non-existent).
I burned out pretty quickly, I see incredible potential for new experiences here w/ EVE, even after only 3 days.
I'm curious if anyone (over age 13) can justify playing Guild Wars after playing EVE?

Edited by: Dark Shikari on 28/09/2005 18:04:02 Welcome to the rest of your life. Or at least the next 5 years.
As a sophisticated gamer, EVE is the only MMORPG you will ever need.
I'd rather play Diablo 2 on the side than Guild Wars--its more sophisticated, doesn't have as many idiots, and is a better game overall anyways. From my short experience with the game, Guild Wars is miserable.
If you loved Elite, Civilization, and then SimCity (in that order, heh), you'll love EVE. EVE is the greatest, most expansive game ever made, and it expands a million times faster than you can exhaust what it has to offer. Welcome -- Proud member of the [23].

I played Guild Wars when it was in the Beta stage. The graphics were in inspiring, until the Char came and made my world burnt and red lol. Guild Wars has a great idea for $0 a month, collect items in missions while trying to attain lvl 20 and get all the skills you can to advance to GvG. I agree though that Guild Wars is a short term game for the reasons listed above. Lack of teamwork with people you really don't know and competing in a huge ladder all the time really sounds boring after maybe 3 months. I got bored after Beta ended, that's my attention span for Guild Wars.
I have been playing Eve for 1 year and 3 months. I have searched for other games in the $14.95 range per month to end my obsession with Eve, but none have come close enough to the graphics; the people you meet in Eve; the wealth of info in the forums and help channels ingame; the huge skill structure; the open possiblility of Industry, PvP, mission running; searching for hidden complexes; hauling stuff; mining roids for isk; researching to maybe get a tech 2 BPo; traveling hundreds of jumps for that rare item or PvP fight; the great variety of ships and tactics; Player owner stations and bases; being in an alliance; gate camping; declaring wars on those you hate; omg I can't stop listing things. There are even more things to do than I listed and the main point that hits home- Eve keeps getting BETTER! You have one tactic down and Eve all of a sudden changes with a patch. Pure brilliance.
No I can't justify playing Guild Wars again after playing Eve, even if Guild Wars is free and I was a homeless poor bum. I would recycle cans and travel with my laptop to pay for dial up and Eve. Someone please save me. --------

Also coming from days of LCD black and white handhelds like Donkey Kong or Frogger days. My comments are:
Got bored of GW after 1-2 months. It is Counterstrike with a fantasy mod. Probably a non-dragging version of WoW, i.e. at lvl 20 (lvl 60 for WoW), you basically go for PvP. But then, GW is meant for ppl who like CS and Diablo 2 in mind. Just for fun once in a while thingy if have little time and just want to do skirmishes. Then again, the long wait of LFGs is horrible!
Eve on the other hand, is more of a relaxed game with planning and open ended. Takes many months to appreciate it a little though. First 5 months are guaranteed to be boring. But the following months after that, it does get better.
Looking for long term Eve-ing with some mining/production and more killing? Drop me a line. I recruit people with a smile See you on the other side.

I use to play GW. Had a guild with a guild hall (that was when it was tough to get a hall). Have a lvl 20 monk, but it got pretty boring to go back and help others get through the same storyline over and over and over again.
The good thing about the game is I can go back to it anytime with no payments. Unless I want the expansion(s) that is.

Once you start playing EVE, it will become your primary source of PC entertainment.
All other games will become something you "dabble" in for a time.
EVE has it's ups & downs like RL.
I've been playing EVE for 874 days. I've averaged probably 1.5 hrs/day over that time period.
I've never played any other PC game for close to 1,300 hours.
EVE can be addicting, it can be boring, it can be thrilling, it can be frustrating.
EVE can be a lot like RL.
No other MMO has come close to EVE IMO.
This single persistant universe MMO is the best out there, no question. ------------------------------------------------ Current Hobby other than EVE |

Eve was my first real mmo. I tried ao for half a year, but got tired of the constant grind. And the pvp sucked badly too. Plus going from a game where the market had some function due to ships got blown up and modules where lost to a game where there were no value sink... well, you figure it out.
You might grow tired of eve from time to time, but you'll come back. It's not a game. It's a lifestyle.
And heck, nothing beats the adrenalin rush you get by getting targeted by a player rat :-)

I'm over 13, and I play Guild Wars. It is a great PvP game, and like all PvP games, it is best played a few hours a day. It is not meant for powergamers who want to play 10+ hours a day. Tombs in a good group with friends is a lot of fun, so is testing new builds for GvG, or just a couple runs through the arenas to see how many wins in a row you can get. The random arenas are a great place to test character builds. There is plenty to do, did you try making friends? I hardly ever needed to join random teams.

There is no wall in EVE.
There is, however, a sort of a thick fog you hit every once in a while when you run out of objectives. In which case you just take a month's hiatus or so, then come back and pwn some noobs.
But there will always be someone > you. Even the legends of our day (past and present being Evol) run the constant danger of falling prey to someone. In which case you lie through your teeth and hope no-one notices.
There is no ladder, no visible, hard-coded goals. EVE is what you make of it.
BTW: Griefing = win. EVE is all about griefing in one form or another. Hell, even the market has an element of PvP and griefing. Yay for purposefully underbidding someone to drive the bastard out. ---

Welcome to EVE-ONLINE, or as i call it the main game I play while playing on the DS I just bought for when work is slack....
I've not actually logged into eve for a good while thanks to work, hense the purchase of the DS, but I'm looking forward to the exd of next month when work slows down a bit and I can get into the game proper...
Left eve twice now, and came back after a couple of months out - I'm not sure why, but I just can not get into any other game like I can with eve.... One of the devs for the new Future Falcon Suite of Eve Tools, visit us here

What doesn't happen, at least not for me, is that you log in and think: 'I'm bored, I don't know what to do.'
From time to time you'll be moaning that training some of your skills takes forever, but happily it's not just waiting. There are many ways to live in EVE, many ways to spend your time, make a fortune or loose it again.
I'm going to hunt in a few minutes. If someone said: "You are not allowed to hunt today !", I'd do some pvp ... or a mission, fly to empire and trade, mine with mates, get some more knowledge about player owned stations and the tech-2 market, scan some moons, scan systems for some hidden complexes and explore them or whatever. Hmm, I just realize that I've never done a COSMOS mission...
That's really cool about EVE, endless possibilities to spend your time, fit your ship and get involved into economy, politics, pvp, whatever you want. That's why I like it, not because I like to wait for a skill that might take a month to get it to lvl. 5.

Eve is the first MMO I played. But by no means the last. Since starting Eve I have left 5 times, Planetside, Earth and Beyond, SWG, FFXI, and WoW. Each has lasted less than a month, i lub this game :D _______________________________________________________
