Currently in the game you really can't fly your ship freely. You have to target something and fly to it. Isn't this going to pose a major handicap to letting players land on planets? How is exploration going to be be allowed if players can't free fly their ships?

I never heard anything about landing. I think planets will basicly be like space, only with a floor to bump into and to get stuck on. Landing in surface stations would prolly work like current stations in space. ------------------

AFAIK, no-one ever mentioned landing on planets (I could be wrong). Planetary flight however, i believe that there was a demo at the last fanfest or some such thing...
I'm sure there will be a way (such as planetary items/beacons on the overview) around this and its way too early to speculate.
Oh and you can fly anywhere is space by double clicking any point. At very least you'll be able to do that.

Anyway double click lets you fly where and as you want :D Ok, it's not really total control, but that's it!

Will this mean that the planet surface will be collidable? God help those Minmatar pilots. A pile of duct tape and scaffolding can't be very aerodynamic.

Hahah. One of my friends thought the same thing for the first 8 months of his EVE life. How the frick can you possibly play the game for that long without ever discovering that you can simply dbl click anywhere in space and your ship will fly in that direction? I tried playing once like that and trust me, it puts you at a serious disadvantage.

*Taps her wooden leg* Yarrr... atmospheric flight huh?
Them Gold Amarr ships'll do well. Cobolt steel gallente aye, them as well. Caldari titanium is good'n strong.
But me leg here is made out of authentic recycled Minmatar spacecraft parts. I be thinkin they should stick to space.
Yarr.

You mean to say you didnt know you could just double clik to move.
As for the planet thing it is happening and you can land at spaceports and in future you can own them like pos structures i read that in some dev blog some time ago.

Apoc 231: "Noise hazard WTF you talking about tower?"
Tower: The Noise hazard your going to cause when you run into that Megathron, If you dont turn to 145 right now sir!"

They are actually talking about surface planetory exploration in Kali.
Dunno if it is just talk, but there is apparently talk.

I'd like to see the scientific stories behind atmospheric flight since hardly any ship is actually flyable (aerodynamics-wise) in its current shape...

Over two years ago, with more detail at last year's fanfest.

From Tritanium's description:
Quote: The main building block in space structures. A very hard, yet bendable metal. Cannot be used in human habitats due to its instability at atmospheric temperatures. Very common throughout the world.
And as you all know Tritanium is a main component in all ships.

We used to be able to control the ship with ctrl+ arrow keys, back in beta. It wasn't full on control. You could just change the angle/direction by a certain degree with every push. Maybe they'll bring that back? If not, you must master the double-click.
Now, the real question is.. Will we still be able to travel through the planet?

EnB flashbacks... never really liked the planets.
Space is where it's at. ------ I generally assume the following: 1. 95% of Empire Carebears don't get 0.0 PVPers. 2. 95% of 0.0 PVPers don't get Empire Carebears. 3. 100% of Ore Thieves steal just to upset the Miners. |

The demo we saw at the fanfest was live with a server and client running on the same laptop.
Lekjart flew the crow round space a bit, then warped it to a planet (to much lots of applause - made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up), spawned some angels and flew around and shot at them a bit. The planet was nicely detailed and I may be mistaken but I think there were some buildings too.
It was awesome.

Imagine a freighter or a dread get caught by planets gravity and crash into it and blow up. Would open up for whole new line of dangers and maybe even player hideouts on plants, which would been very nice imho.

It's going to be a gridded board of land and sea quadrants where you get assigned a value to your ship for the devs to play chess with. Entering this game will undeniably result in shiploss though you'll land yourself on the dev christmas shortlist in return.

I wouldnt bet on planetary flight anytime soon. It takes huge amount of work just to create a landscape, not to mention to make the planet looks real you need one hell of a lot of landscape, per planet.
Ok, they dont have to do that, they can just enable you to fly very very close to that pure flat mesh and hope you dont crash through the surface and the planet dispears.
Although the least they can do is to make a station on the opposite side of a planet / moon invisible rather than the planet somehow being see-through.

I can see planets being a side-game of sorts, similar in coding and process to Jump To Lightspeed for Star Wars Galaxies, except we will have full control of either air-ships and a walking character, or just the walking character using automated transports.
While this would add infintesimal amounts of content for Roleplaying and gameplay, I think I would still prefer if EVE maintained its current system. Perhaps CCP can make a totally seperate game, same universle style, same ideas, but planet based.
Don't get me wrong, if it has to come, I will enjoy every minute, but I am just getting comfortable with my character in space at 10mil SP, adding more junk on the ground would be moving sideways...
