Ok I have heard this word for years now and I want to know what it means and where it came from.
Correct me if I am wrong but I beleive it came from people typing to fast trying to say the "owned" someone and accidently hit the "p" instead of the "o" and said that they "pwned" someone.
Any other views??
Oh and what does 4tw mean? 4 the win?? _______________________________________________ Member - [CHRST] Christian Fellowship Foundation

Yes that's one of the rumoured origins of pwned. Someone once told me it had something to do with "pawns" (as in those represented in chess) but I don't believe him.
And yes 4tw means "for the win"
now what's ffs?

Yep, just a miss spelling that has caught on. Pwn is now used as a stronger version of Own. It's worse to get pwned than to get owned.
4tw is for the win, also spelled ftw.

1. pwned
A corruption of the word "Owned." This originated in an online game called Warcraft, where a map designer misspelled "owned." When the computer beat a player, it was supposed to say, so-and-so "has been owned."
Instead, it said, so-and-so "has been pwned."
It basically means "to own" or to be dominated by an opponent or situation, especially by some god-like or computer-like force.
"Man, I rock at my job, but I still got a bad evaluation. I was pwned."
OR
"That team totally pwned us."
2. pwned
1. The origins of "pwned" are debated but there are two possible sources: a. A prominent quake player mis spelled "owned" and the new word "pwned" was adopted by people who thought it was "1337". b. A warcraft map designer misspelled "owned" and thus people started using "pwned" instead.
The definitions are as follows: In video games: 1. Completely annihilated or dominated. 2. Perfectly owned, meaning the other player did not do any damage.
I pwned your head with my awp.
OR
I just pwned your ass noob!

The verb to pwn (past tense: pwned, pwnd, pwn'd, pwnt, pooned) as used by the Internet gaming subculture, means to beat or dominate an opponent. While it probably originated as a typing error of the word own, it is now used intentionally by many members of the subculture. The term has become so ubiquitous in Internet circles that it is often used outside of gaming contexts; for example, "He just got pwned in that debate" or "The hunters pwned that bear."

Edited by: Wendat Huron on 11/10/2005 02:30:35 It's not a misspelling, people got fed up with people running around typing owned all over the place and simply banned the word and so pwned was born.

Funny that you say that then say "LOL" which is far, far stupider and more annoying than pwn.

How does one pronounce "pwned"?
I've heard it pronounced "owned" and also as "pawned".
This vexes me, as I feel I really need to know how to use this word in casual conversation, particularly to reporters and MPs.
As a more advanced question, how does one pronounce "wtfpwned", "omgwtfbbqfishsicks!!11!1!", "omgh4xorz!" et al? |

Pawned? Good god.
Pronounced as "owned" but with a scrunched face and more emphasis of course.

In casual conversation its best used as sign language. Just pick your nose, will convey the same thing to the masses expecting bourgeois small talk. To MPs, thats different. Just say it quickly in between quotes from Pi The Movie and they'll pick it up subliminally that these aren't the criminals they are looking for.

"wuhn mohr gehn-iss" sums up all of them.
