something i have thought about for some time, but never asked. Why are our big nasty ships soo under gunned? I know alot of people are gonna think im nutz (its ok i kinda am lol)
Hear me out first....On our precious little rock the battleship era ended with WW2 (mostly i know we in the US used them a bit longer)
Those ships had BIG guns, medium guns and AA guns. Massive numbers of them too
Example....USS Missouri Displacement:45,000 tons Length:887.2 ft (270.4 m) Beam:108.2 ft (33.0 m)
Weapon Systems (1940's) 9 +ù 16 in (406 mm)/50 cal Mark 7 guns 20 +ù 5 in (127 mm)/38 cal Mark 12 guns 80 +ù 40 mm/56 cal anti-aircraft guns 49 +ù 20 mm/70 cal anti-aircraft cannons
1984 9 +ù 16 in (406 mm)/50 cal Mark 7 guns 12 +ù 5 in (127 mm)/38 cal Mark 12 guns 32 +ù B G M-109 Tomahawk cruise missiles 16 +ù R G M-84 Harpoon Anti-Ship missiles 4 +ù 20 mm/76 cal Phalanx C I W S
This vessel is about the size (in length ) as a Coercer(278 m), has guns as big 406 mm (Very near eve's biggest rail gun)
quickly to the point i guess (gotta go to work lol)
Other than the KISS plan (keep it simple stupid) why are our ships so under gunned. |

You're counting the barrels. The Missouri had 3 turrets, and then a bunch of smaller guns thrown on.
EVE Battleships have drones to cover the role of protection from smaller ships, and most in-game turrets have 2+ barrels on them. Its a weak comparison to start with, and EVE Battleships are overgunned if you decide to use it. TEST Alliance BEST Alliance |

BS's in EVE can use drones for point D, or if you're really squirrelly, smart bombs, nuets, nos and whatever else you feel is necessary. Besides, nothing stops you from putting point guns on your BS...not recommended but hey, it's EVE, go ahead and do it!!!
As for the USS Missouri, it was designed to destroy horribad CGI Alien ships from another planet. EVE Battleships don't get to kill any aliens (rogue drones and sleepers don't count)

Bismarck got sunk by a British battlecruiser.
The Bizzy's pilot prolly just didn't train up his support skills before he got in it, though :p As for the Yamato... the two could have gone toe-to-toe, during WWII, but when the Mo got her refit in the 80's, it was (and still is) the single most powerful ship in history. We have drones and if you want to fit them smartbombs for point defense. As well as fiat shields which don't exist on the missouri. Our weaponry is built on external swivels with 360 degree firing arcs and we operate in a 3D environment with no obstructive horizons and pesky islands to get in the way. The missouri can only go 33 knots at full tilt, a coercer is 252m/s base which is 489.8 knots (4sf). Also, a coercer takes a few hours to make and costs a pittance in terms of capsuleer resources while the Missouri represented a significant investment and took months to build.
Essentially, if you were in a universe where you can replace something close to modern battleship class in a matter of hours, had shielding and could support unmanned drones, why wouldn't you just stick some main guns on it and be done?
Also, balance. |

You didn't, you are right that many Americans are nuts and ignorant tho.
The Japanese Yamato-class had almost twice the displacement of the Missouri.. So that's almost twice your tonnage and 2 of the class were built. You are even lucky that Adolf ****** started his war before his navy was ready. 5 planned classes were to be built, were bigger then the Missouri. The biggest class was 5 times as large and was to carry 20 inch guns. Would have been an absolute beauty. In the end all Adolf ****** achieved was besting even the worst Americans when it came to nuttiness and ignorance tho. Google "Nasi H-class battleships" for more info about them. The reason it was a major battleship is that it was revolutionary at the time of its construction, had a very solid combat record, and was very, very influential in its theatre of war. It was probably the most influential battleship ever constructed, as it caused the freaking Royal Navy to panic. TEST Alliance BEST Alliance |

Actually they were a little less than 40% larger.
A third was actually built as an Aircraft Carrier (Shinanno), the heaviest of the war. It was sunk by a Submarine like 10 days out of port. Hilarious I think overall. The Yamoto's designed to fight Battleships met their end to Aircraft Carriers, the Shinanno designed to fight Aircraft Carriers was sunk by a sub.

The USS Missouri doesn't have nearly the rate of fire that EVE Ships have.
Consider, the 1400mm Artillery on a Tornado can fire nearly 4 volleys per minute to the USS Missouri's 2.
1400mm is 1.4m is a 4.5ft diameter barrel. This is EVE - Everybody Versus Everybody.

Funny enough, she was designed entirely around naval treaty limitations exploiting superior firepower on a smaller hull and called a treaty battleship. The British argued that since they had a long distance empire to protect their ships weight should not include an excess of water and fuel than made the torpedo defense bulges use water as a defense to deflect explosions.
The were called Cherry Tree class because the Washington Naval Treaty cut their size down.

And yeah, Japan wanted the Pacific war to be decided in one massive engagement, so they kept all their "flagships" and critically important vessels as safe as possible, avoiding committing them to small engagements. And on guns, Maelstroms can fire up to eight 1400mm cannon, or if wanting to count barrels, sixteen 650mm repeating artillery cannons. (Autocannons. That's 25.6 inch diameter for those suffering of archaic units of measurement.) If we want to split hairs, EVE ships carry at least the double the amount, since they have to cover both sides.
Ragnarok, of course, has six hardpoints of quad 3500mm siege artillery or 6x2500mm repeating artillery. Which is, technically, 2x24 3500mm barrels or 2x36 2500mm barrels, making it the most overgunned heap of scrap metal with a warp drive in the cluster. |

One of the interesting things about the Japanese decisive battle will end the war theory is what it did for everything else on the war front. Japan planned a short war where one victory would be required to end it while the US looked two years ahead. This is evidenced by almost everything the US did vs when the Japanese started doing it. They tended to addapt after the crisis started not before in prevention of it.
After Pearl Harbor the US knew exactly where its bread was buttered and immediately started laying new Essex Carriers out. Even realizing that these new Carriers would take too long they started converting 8 Light Cruisers under construction for the coming storm. While the Japanese converted a few ships designed to be converted to Carriers in the event of war and had a prewar one under construction the first new Japanese Wartime Carriers were laid after Midway. 9 Months after the conflict started.
The Japanese planned 16 new Unryu class Fleet Carriers. The penultimate Aircraft Carrier battle of the Pacific happened at the Mariana's in June 1944 saw 5 Japanse Fleet Carriers and 4 Light Carriers face 7 US Fleet Carriers and 8 Light Carriers and the first two Unryu Carriers were commissioned less than a month after and a third 2 months after that. Nine months is along time. They became so desperate for Carrierss they did this to one of their Battleships.
The plans for the rest of them were curtailed by Japans steal and oil supply lines being cut. Japan didn't start building Escort Ships and organizing convoys in large numbers until late 1943 after their merchant fleet was being decimated. They had in commission 2 types C and D from early 1944 building over 120 of them and introduced more small Escort Carriers after the battle for their supply lines was in full swing and therefore too late. They also didn't want to assign front line Destroyers considering the ASW duty of protecting merchant ships unworthy. As well they built hundreds of cheap no frills merchant ships to combat the losses they were incurring. Compared to the early US effort to put Escort Carriers and Destroyer Escorts / Frigates to sea and assign more Destroyers to back units plus their massive right from the start Liberty Cargo Ship construction program. About 6 nearly finished Carriers would be left incomplete to these shortages and too...
Then their were their pilots and planes. They had the absolute best of both when the war started. The Zero is an icon that served as their go to naval fighter for the entire war. The US Wildcat was inferior so the US released the Hellcat and the Corsair to beat down the Zero and it worked and there in lies the problem. They had the best fighter and didn't put their designers to the task of building something that could best it and therefore the fighters the Allies would be designing. Those great pilots on the other hand inflicted heavy US fighter casualties... then all died. The US worked very hard to pump out qualified pilots and over 5 or so battles and dozens of skirmishes the great Japanese pilots were slowly whittled down by AA fire and enemy planes and little was being down to replace them until they realized they were in short supply.
That battle in the Mariana's above was called the Great Mariana's Turkey Shoot because the quality of new pilots was so very low while the quality of new US planes was so very high. The Japanese would then with few good pilots left abandon their Carriers and begin the Kamikaze flown by pilots with as little as a days training. 4000 Kamikaze would fly and 10000 more were waiting on the home isle, they had the planes not the pilots. Well they did innovate on one plane... yeah that's a human missile.
Even on the ground Bolt Action Rifles were the primary weapons produced of the entire war and when I say primary I mean it. Not one semi automatic rifle saw full service. They knew how to make Sub-machine guns, the kind great for island, jungle, mountain, urban fighting, basically the Pacific War in a nutshell but only made 30000 for special forces and over 6 million bolt actions. There first anti tank rocket launcher came too late and many new antitank guns would not pierce American tanks.
All this led to a strategy where starving regiments would be blockaded, scouted, bombarded it and take out the airforce and than US / Australian troops invaded with a force tailored to defeat their enemy killing 5 sometimes 10 to 1 with the principal strategy being no surrender, fight to the death and maybe the Allies will be like, this is too bloody let's go home. Instead they took the Islands they needed and bypassed the ones they didn't leaving them to starve and used them to bombard Japan too dust with B-29's.
Once we bring our Battleships into the ocean now swarming with uncontested Allied Subs and Bombers we will have our Battleship duel with the Great Yamato crushing their Battleships and they will realize it is hopeless. Just one more bloody battle and they will all go home. People say production won the war and they are right but Japanese strategic planning and lack of adaptation sure played a big part in helping. |

Don't forget Dive Bombers.
Torpedo's hit below the belt, Dive Bombers burn the deck. I like that combination because it gives me the mental image of a very short guy running up to a big tall fat guy and punching him in the nuts, while he hunches in pain over another one comes up and drops an anvil on his head. Thump!

Not saying that dive bombers aren't good. But vs. a super-armored battleship, I'd rather have more torpedo bombers.
Dive bombers mess up the flight deck of a carrier pretty bad, though. They are awesome to settle a carrier vs carrier debate. |

As opposed to the smart rational people of other nations. Radius Prime wrote: The Japanese Yamato-class had almost twice the displacement of the Missouri.. So that's almost twice your tonnage and 2 of the class were built.
Actually they were a little less than 40% larger. A third was actually built as an Aircraft Carrier (Shinanno), the heaviest of the war. It was sunk by a Submarine like 10 days out of port. Hilarious I think overall. The Yamoto's designed to fight Battleships met their end to Aircraft, the Shinanno designed to face Aircraft Carriers and was sunk by a Sub. Just can't catch a break.
Shinano sank because her watertight compartments weren't, her crew was unfamiliar with the ship and early on, damage control measures that might have saved her weren't taken because of ignorance.
Also, there seems to have been a design flaw where the torpedo bulge attached to the armored belt.
Regarding Bismarck, the ship would have sunk eventually - after destruction of all heavy weapons - when the opening of the engine room flood valves accelerated her demise.
L++tjens refused to have the jammed rudder blown off for fear of damaging the screws. Personally, I consider his situation assessment to have been flawed in this regard. It's better to maybe limp home instead of being guaranteed to getting shot to pieces.
Also, had Bismarck been built with four screws instead of just three, that torpedo hit would have probably not knocked out all steering capability.
On another note, Missouri and the other ships of her class were mainly used as naval artillery platforms during the cold war. In that regard they're actually more like dreadnoughts in Eve than actual ingame battleships. |

In space, nothing will ever beat a big hunk of matter being fired at tremendous speed. Perfect accuracy and unlimited range. Self-propelled munitions would be prone to failure and only have so much fuel, meaning any advantage from guidance would be moot after a short time. Not that it is hard to predict motion in space and put a few hundred kilograms moving at 10% the speed of light exactly where something is going to be with a 0% error rate. Crew could be a really interesting game mechanic. Something with a lot of variables and random values. Maybe with potential to exceed or underperform depending on situation, skills and history. It would also lend more impact to loosing a ship.

That was hilarious. I like the part about how they showed all the modern weapons designed around destroying ships that are not Battleships than pretty much stating that nothing can sink them.
Then they pointed to the Battle of Samar where 1 Escort Carrier was sunk by a surface fire and 1 actually sunk by a Kamikaze. Note that the Escort Carrier is not a fleet unit but built on a merchant ship hull, all the planes were armed with ground attack ordnance not anti ship, all six Escort Carriers weighed less than Yamoto alone, the only reason they were able to get so close to the fleet was because a colossal failure in intelligence combined with a diversion that cost four Japanese Carriers and the US won the Battle with the fleet 1/5 the size using convoy escorts. As for the HMS Glorious that was entirely their fault for not spotting them with I don't know their entire Airwing which was not flying at the time, the invention of Radar of course makes scenario unlikely to happen again.
Does the person who made this think a Carrier today or any armed missile ship will ever be within 30 km of a Battleship. No they will instead launch like 900 missiles from 100km+ away. They will never be in range of the enemy fleet unless they are using Missiles then what the hell are they wasting all that room for guns on?

Railguns are going to seriously change the game once they are brought into active use (See the video I posted above) as they'll have just as good of range as missiles with the benefit of having projectiles that are extremely faster, a fraction of the cost, and unable to be shot out of the sky like aircraft or missiles can be |

Which means ships of undetermined type with guns may one day at an undetermined might some day come back after a 50 year absence. Unless of course they build giant Railguns on shore with ICBM range or Rail Planes or Satellites completely obsolete that, or lasers. I doubt it would be heavily armored since this new super weapon is so powerful so it would be a Battlecruiser not a Battleship.
That really doesn't create the "myth of the battleship", just mean guns may come back on warships as offensive weapons. If they want to call that ship a battleship like they were planning for the defunct arsenal ship I am fine with that.

IMO, the real question will be how to power those weapons for sustained fire. We are talking about a metric ass ton of electricity released every single shot and you need to resupply the system. The ship will definately need to be nuclear for that I guess. |

Not quite although Americans like to think that.
CSS Virginia and USS Monitor were riverboats, both far from ocean worthy. They did not render the ocean going wooden ships obsolete. That honor goes to the French Gloire and even more so to HMS Warrior. The first true ocean going iron hulled ship that combined armor, a screw propellor and a steam engine. It was also twice the length of any other warship at the time. Warrior could sail through any fleet of the time unscathed and rendered all navies, including its own almighty British navy obsolete.
Both Gloire and Warrior predated the American ships but the first actual fight between ironclads happened at Hampton Roads. Reopen the EVE gate so we can invade Serenity. Goons can go first. |

Adela Talvanen wrote:M1A2, Bradley

I'm not one of those "Mericuh! F**k yeah!" kind of Americans.... but recognize that this nation of mutts I call home, built the single most destructive conventional weapon in the history of mankind.... :) Honestly, if you want an example of a top-of-the-line real-world battleship, you name the Yamato, Musashi or Bismarck. Bismarck was smaller then the Missouri, smaller guns, armor and boat.. and if it wasn't for the weakness of the British Hood it would have gone down as silent as its sister Tirpitz... The reason it was a major battleship is that it was revolutionary at the time of its construction, had a very solid combat record, and was very, very influential in its theatre of war. It was probably the most influential battleship ever constructed, as it caused the freaking Royal Navy to panic.
Again, its battle record shows the weakness of HMS Hood, which was a product of a different way of naval thinking, namely speed tanking. This way of thinking lead to battle cruisers like Hood which lacked deck armor in favor of speed but proved utterly useless in actual battle during both the great wars. The Hood was the pride and joy of the budget cut British Navy and in all their excitement they forgot it wouldn't match up to a true battleship. The admiralty made a fatal flaw ever pitting that ship against a battleship.
As far as construction goes, there was nothing revolutionary about the Bismarck. For a battleship its size it wasn't especially better armored nor was it fitted with extraordinary guns. The American Iowa class was superior to Bismarck in every field that matters. What provoked the press about Bismarck is that its very construction was in breach with the Treaty of Washington that limited battleship sizes at the time (it also ended British rule over the seas as 4/5 of the British BS fleet was destroyed in accordance with the treaty). In all honesty Germans weren't supposed to built battleships at all. This lead to a whole breed of German "supercruisers" miniature battleships built under Adolf ****** before Bismarck.
If you want to understand why the big fuzz about a ship. At the time battleships were seen as the ultimate weapons of war and destruction similar to how we see weapons of mass destruction today. So breaking the treaty was like North Korea building Nukes and led to a lot of diplomatic pressure.
Anyway, could discuss the subject for hours and left out a lot. Your view needs slight adjustment but I am not trying to belittle the Bismarck. It was by all measurement one of the greatest BS ever constructed and deserves its place in history. Reopen the EVE gate so we can invade Serenity. Goons can go first. |

Those ships are basically nothing but guns on top of guns, with 300m long torpedoes and thousands of fighter escorts. Just more the grittiness of of for me I guess.

Guys, get your Facts right:
The Bismarck was NOT sunk by external Factors. They managed to destroy everything on the hull, but the hull itself was sunk by the crew on board.
Quote form the Englisch Wikipedia Article:
First Officer Hans Oels ordered the men below decks to abandon ship; he instructed the engine room crews to open the ship's watertight doors and prepare scuttling charges.[118] Gerhard Junack, the chief engineering officer, ordered his men to set the demolition charges with a 9-minute fuse, but the intercom system broke down, and so he sent a messenger to confirm the order to scuttle the ship. The messenger never returned, and so Junack primed the charges and ordered the crew to abandon the ship.[119] Junack and his comrades heard the demolition charges detonate as they made their way up through the various levels.[120] In the meantime, Oels rushed throughout the ship, ordering men to abandon their posts. After he reached the deck a huge explosion killed him and about a hundred others.[121]
The four British ships fired more than 2,800 shells at Bismarck, and scored more than 400 hits, but were unable to sink Bismarck by gunfire. At around 10:20, running low on fuel, Tovey ordered the cruiser Dorsetshire to sink Bismarck with torpedoes, and sent his battleships back to port.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_battleship_Bismarck
While i understand the reasons for Eve Battleships to not have Point Defense, how was that about Titans?
If i would build a 14km ship it would have about 1000 guns. And 2/3 of them would be point defense.
EDIT: Just btw.: Another intersting warship class and currently the largest not being a carrier of some sorts: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirov-class_battlecruiser Old Bitter Veteran, EX-GBC / EX-IT Member. |

wow this blew up quick. re-fire rate for the "406" was slow why???? because it was still being done by men not an auto-load system come on really, why even go there lol
someone noted that i was counting the mains by number of barrels.
First that's the way it was done I R L. each gun could be fired independently (and as such its own separate system ) with the only real restriction being the fact that it was in a turret with 2 other guns. Second although the 2 D drawings of weapons such as the 425 mm Large rail gun show 3 gun barrels (which would in reality mean 3 guns in a single turret) the actual render is still that of a single barrel single gun system.
Battleships by design were meant to go toe to toe with any other surface warship (not carriers at fighter distance obviously)
They did not fear gangs (lol battle groups/ fleets, whatever) of smaller vessels unless they were armed with torpedoes because,.....they couldn't touch them (armor was to thick, and the hell they were throwing right back was insane). The number of secondary weapons SPECIFICALLY meant to deal with smaller vessels was High (double in the case of the mighty MO, i'm only counting the 127 mm as the others were AA for the most part)
damn gotta go again. later folks, thanks for the replies. nice history lessons. |

To answer this question correctly we must learn a little of the EvE histories:
Once apron (in 2003 they hadn't invented the word upon yet) a time long long ago (2003) the EvE universe was fun and new and normal. CCP still had a "vision" that they were sticking to, battleships were rare, and Jita was still a backwater hick system.
I had just trained up cruisers, mined the materials (had to push ore up hills both ways back then too) for a friend to build me a brand new Thorax and headed out into Zero Zero space (named apparently for the number of people you would find out there).
Anyway after getting owned by some really nasty rats I figured I would GTFO of of there and go back to empire. So I spend an hour or so jumping and mwding a hundred or so jumps back to empire, when on the very last gate after FD-MJL I see my first battleship ever, a minny typhoon class. Assuming the pilot, a certain DrFeelGood of m0o corporation was a fellow intrepid explorer I continued on my merry way with a quick 0/.
Next thing I know he locks onto my ship with hardly any delay and despite my being a few hundred metres away and zipping along at hundreds of metres per second at a 90 degree angle his first salvo wrcks the fugg out my boat with pinpoint accuracy blowing half my stern off. I start spinning out of control, pooping in my pod water when I hear the glorious sound of a gate activation and I jump to safe space.
Short story - people whined and whinged so much that their sub million isk frigates and sub 10 million isk cruisers got killed too easily by 100 million battleships instalocking and instapopping them that they got nerfed to shite. You didnt need point defense because you could kill small shite with your main guns.

I don't think the lack of point defense is really the big deal with Battleships, they should near require a support fleet to hit effectively far below them. Cruiser targets should be the mid ground of accuracy for them.
What I think they really need is more Scan Res and MWD Mobility and I was disappointed they didn't get it so far in the rebalance. They tank a while to even lock a BC let alone a Cruiser, I think 150-180 at max skill should be a good average with a Sebo bringing them up to Tier 1/2 BC lock times. The MWD should be able to last 5-7 minutes minutes on its own without anything else running, right now a Heavy Cap Booster is pretty much required for most fits, especially bad on Amarr and the Hyperion. A good run time would have been nice.
Besides those problems Drones cover them fine. Especially with two mids more likely to be free. |

Firstly, a 425mm railgun fires slugs that are 425mm in diameter, but the railgun and barrel take up a considerable amount more space. Railguns fire slugs much smaller than ballistic guns because the slugs are fired at much higher muzzle velocity and the barrel system is very complex rather than just a tube of metal.
The battleship autocannons in EVE go up to 800mm -- these fire explosive shells that are 800mm in diameter, MUCH larger than those 406mm artillery shells fired by the battleship you listed. But these 800mm autocannons I believe are fired in pairs (for a single turret), and they fire several shells in a split-second volley. Their muzzle velocity is several times that of the 406mm guns, and their damage throughput is MANY times higher per shot, and they can fire MUCH faster.
The battleship artillery goes up to 1400mm, and those beasts fire those huge shells still faster than the 406mm cannons I believe. Don't quote me on that though. But a 1400mm shell is tremendous, and when it impacts traveling several times the speed of sound, it'll tear through metal like so much water. Fit a warfare link to your tech 1 battlecruiser. Train Wing Commander. Get in the Squad Commander or Wing Commander position. Your fleets will be superior to everyone else's. |

Metal ships were already in existence by the time of that fight. HMS Nemisis 1839 and HMS Warrior(1861 ish) were among the first metal plated or metal warships. The monitor was very important because of the turret. Took a bit though before they were incorporated.

You missed a Large part of the point. nice hack job too. point was a ship the size of a Coercer carried far more armaments than our super sized Eve warships. the simple fact that even one eve gun (and its more than one lol ) are similar in size to WW2 components tells me our ships are WAY under gunned.
The fact that Auto cannons and arty are huge doesn't really change anything. facts are these ships are weaker than they should be.
800mm existed. it was german arty on a train =p do we even need to figure out how small a train car is ....I think not

Regarding the under-gunned thing. Its a bit tough because its a fictional environment but size of the ship and size of the gun are not necessarily connected.
I mean generally tech is pushed to its limits but its also rationalized that if you can build multiple somethings that is sufficient for destroying another unit then that's better then building one that will obliterate a unit but suffer consequences of less of those things and the additional issues that crop up.
The Japanese and Germans in WW2 were great at building huge cutting edge monster ships with huge monster guns but they would have been better building multiple smaller units like the Americans and English. Yamato was great but it got pwned by smaller cheaper ships. Tirpitz and Bismark were awesome but they got pwned too. Had the Germans churned out a few hundred more uboats instead of those two ships they probably would have defeated England before US got involved.
TL;DR
Maybe because the guns are sufficient to destroy other ships, and are balanced around tracking / cap penalties they're superior to huge monster gunned ships that would track like crap and blow half the ships cap for a few shot n probably miss. |

The Germans didn't build Huge warships they were limited by the treaty of Versailles. Anglo-German Naval Agreement in 1935 allowed the Germany to build Bismark and all the other warships that fought WW2 but they were still limited in size. German battleships were smaller, but that made them faster. Their gun size was limited but that just made Germany make better smaller guns.
Japan on the other hand made huge battleships that spent most of the war as troop and supply transports as they wanted to save them for some massive fleet engagement that never happened. With their limited supplies of steel they would have benefited from more carriers, but would 4 or 5 more carriers have really mattered,...maybe lol
As to them NOT being under gunned, well we probably will never agree.
Part of my argument is based on size.
Yes eve is fictional, however they did go so far as to give them (the ships)very real sizes. Based on that and the fact that weapon systems of similar caliber also exist currently, these vessels are, just by space alone under gunned.
The argument that guns are "sufficient" to destroy other vessels maybe true. However, battleships unless lucky, are no threat to frigs, destroyers, or cruisers because their weapon systems simply cannot engage smaller faster vessels. Those vessels were however in history crunchy little treats for battleships and their BIG GUNS
Battleships are victims of game balance. Instead of them being a true pinnacle of sub capital (lol Battleships sub capital. They ARE capital ships in reality lol) they are a money sinks for eve.

CCP opened that door as soon as they allowed size info to come out. The ships all have real sizes, as does the ship I compared to them.
Simple fact, a tiny ship (compared to eve ships ) has a ton more weaponry than any eve warship, and its mixed in sizes and quantities.
Balance,...the point people love to bring up when something is broken in their favor. I know all the PVP pilots love to scream about how un fair it is that they cant kill this or that in their frigates.....get a real ship or find a better way to generate income so u can afford more ships.
For the record, Battleships are also classified wrong. They were capital ships/Flagships here in the omg real world.....shocking I know. The only reason carriers beat them in reality is range, if a battleship could ever have gotten in range, carriers would get smoked every time.
Here in eve land, u would need a massive fleet of BS to even dent a carrier that was dumb enough to let u into gun range....oddly backwards. |

Rounds fired from projectile weapons in EVE aren't simply a case of a projectile propelled by cordite in a metal jacket. Most of them are rocket propelled and carry, at the very least, nuclear payloads.
If you want to take an example, look at rockets. The four smallest missile types have the following warheads :
EM - EMP Explosive - Nuclear Kinetic - Armor Piercing Thermic - Plasma
In short, it's not about how wide your barrel is, it's got everything to do with what you're firing, how you're firing it, and at what speed.
Also, comparing an EVE battleship to any vessel used in a modern day navy is a ridiculous concept. They're completely different, and share only the name of their class in common.

As for the battleships like I said earlier they were great small ship killers at the outset of EvE. They were nerfed later for some ridiculous reason. They didn't originally suffer from what they suffer from now. Very first time I saw a battleship in EvE was in FD-MJL in a Thorax... I was right next to him, less then a kilometre coming out of warp, zipping along on MWD, traversal must have been insane and he about blew half my ship's armor off on the first salvo. those are missiles though boss. this could turn into a very looong discussion. Ammo for guns in eve is still very similar. (based on your own artwork =]) Its still a shell with a propellant of some kind, and a bullet again of some type.
As for the "size of my barrel" u gave me that info. 425mm is not much different from 406mm. The size of the gun, and corresponding turret based on that info should remain close. There maybe some other internal differences, but those will be contained inside the vessel. the turret and barrel are probably very much the same.
I suppose I may be comparing apples and oranges. The 406mm is more like an arty gun (based on ammo) I understand that a railgun is different it uses magnets to fire a metal slug of some kind. They do both throw something of a similar size, technically a rail gun might need a longer barrel to achieve the proper velocity but the basic size of the turrets and barrels are gonna be close just based on basic math. |

The USS Missouri is one of the USA's historic battleships that was mothballed when it was retired from active duty, and borrowed to be used in that movie. It was never "designed to destroy horribad CGI Alien ships". Learn to distinguish real life from make believe, please. |

Tirpitz was highly effective in her own way, while never directly sinking a ship her presence at sea in the early part of the war caused the disbanding of convoys and resultant sinking of many tons of shipping by U-boats. Tirpitz was ultimately undermined by the fact Germany lacked the ability to offer a support fleet to cover her and thus was forced to remain inactive for risk of being overwhelmed by superior numbers of smaller ships. (think Titan engaged by subcaps).
As for Bismarck vs Hood, HMS Hood was outdated and a design flaw allowed a shell to penetrate a torpedo magazine leading to a fatal explosion (analogy: Star Wars and Death Star exhaust port.) That being said the Hood was supported by a much more modern Battleship HMS Prince of Wales which was so shiny and new it turned out the guns could not be aimed properly and so was unable to support the Hood. (Bismarck also had a consort in the engagement the Prince Eugen). HMS Prince of Wales received several severe hits herself but was able to disengage using a smokescreen (HMS Prince of Wales was sunk by Japanese Aircraft less than 7 months later).
I still love these history/EVE threads. Scammers are currently selling killrights on this toon for up to 5mil, if you have paid for this service demand your money back at once.

It would have been an ugly fight. there is no accuracy data for the yamoto. load times are 2 per min for Iowa, 1.5 for yamoto. If we assume that they are similar it is still anyone's fight.
Accuracy During World War II .
A Naval War College study performed during World War II estimated that an Iowa Class (BB-61) battleship firing with top spot against a target the size of the German battleship Bismarck would be expected to achieve the following hit percentages. Range Percentage hits against a broadside targetPercentage hits against an end-on targetRatio 10,000 yards (9,144 m) 32.7 22.3 1.47:1 20,000 yards (18,288 m) 10.5 4.1 2.56:1 30,000 yards (27,432 m) 2.7 1.4 1.92:1
Yamato is bigger, Iowa class are all smaller, this will give Iowa a small advantage based on accuracy of the time. Again a hell of a fight. |

Yeah, IRL battleships really didn't work out because they were designed around their guns if you think about how they were used. EVE battleships oddly come in many different flavors in terms of bonused modules and module slots. For example, there's no way you could compare a Scorpion BS with any of the vessels of the WW2. Electronics then weren't a common item on naval vessels. But over all, battleships to me were about taking hits and/or dishing them out. I think that's about the only thing EVE BS class vessels may have in common with their IRL analogs even with the tiercide going on. |

Hear me out first....On our precious little rock the battleship era ended with WW2 (mostly i know we in the US used them a bit longer)
Those ships had BIG guns, medium guns and AA guns. Massive numbers of them too ....... etc etc etc not well though argument
look pal, its simply called balance, if EVE had "realist" fitting and weaponry designs, Battleships would be night indestructible and would have so much firepower they could glass planet surfaces like an star wars ISD does in SW lore.
put it this way, with the 1.5 km long an hyperion got, you could fit something like:
100 point defence anti missile lasers feed by a fusion reactor so they would be ammo less, being in space this same things would shoot down smaller ships like firing nukes at flies.
Blasters are particle accelerators, given the power outputs you could get, you could arguably fire at a planet 2 or 3 kilograms of neutronium at relativistic speed and get the shoot go straight through the crust, mantle, core and exit the other side of the planet, while forcing any matter being hit undergo nuclear fusion, and probably making the atmosphere of the planet start a self sustained but short lived combustion
a Raven missiles would be able to fly easily at speeds up to million of kilometers per hour using ion engines and target and hit targets at the other side of the solar system, with damage outputs I cannot even fathom to calculate, but probably enough to destroy entire nations, not to mention given it fires how many? 8 ******* ICBM sized antimatter warheads each 5 seconds... you could cover an entire planet surface with ordenance in a few minutes...
it is just not feasible to try make it realistic... I have done some modding in Freespace making eve online ships realist there... the end results were that they could single handledly destroy entire fleets of whatever you tossed at them from any universe or even of the same eve universe with current balance. |

If u can fit one in a Coercer, u can fit one in The Missouri lol very near the same size (in length) U forget how much of those ships were engines/ engine components.

what part is more un-realistic, me wanting my ship properly protected or 2 mile long ships that are NOT properly protected? Do u honestly believe even a fantasy govt would allow billions of isk worth of ships to be so easily gunned down?
Cry balance all you want. Battleships used to be fearsome. They aren't any longer. Why? because they listened to the wrong crowd. Battleships are now just fat a$$ed kill mails that pirates can giggle about in their dark places lol

They would be fine if they were more mobile and less stupid scan res. DPS and tank are fine. Just mobility that really makes them pointless to use over BC. |

When looking at the balance of battleships versus frigates -- for example -- 5x the DPS (not even counting projection) for 25x the cost seems a little ridiculous at first blush but it makes sense from a game design perspective when you consider that it forces players to work together instead of super rich ultra high SP players being able to whelp hundreds of newbies. EVE is a game of diminishing returns and for good reason. |

EVE is a game of diminishing returns and for good reason. I disagree. If there was a 25x DPS on a battleship a couple of newbies with a few weeks skill training and an understanding of game mechanics have modules and ships at there disposal to defeat any single non cap in game. Success or failure when fighting a battleship in ships 25x less expensive should be skill based primarily.
Nerfing to the point that one of the most fearsome known type of ship is close to pointless to fly in PvP is not an intelligent response. The irony is that we still have battleships in EVE but now they're called Battlecruisers and T3's. |

No they Didn't, main point being they couldn't stay afloat on the open ocean, they'd sink.
If you want most influential Ironclad ships that made every ship prior obsolete, look at HMS Warrior and the french Gloire. Or another influential ship the HMS Dreadnought.

Rounds fired from projectile weapons in EVE aren't simply a case of a projectile propelled by cordite in a metal jacket. Most of them are rocket propelled and carry, at the very least, nuclear payloads. If you want to take an example, look at rockets. The four smallest missile types have the following warheads : EM - EMP Explosive - Nuclear Kinetic - Armor Piercing Thermic - Plasma In short, it's not about how wide your barrel is, it's got everything to do with what you're firing, how you're firing it, and at what speed. Also, comparing an EVE battleship to any vessel used in a modern day navy is a ridiculous concept. They're completely different, and share only the name of their class in common. Also, cool off the attitudes, trolling and personal attacks in this thread. Keep it civil.

Consider, the 1400mm Artillery on a Tornado can fire nearly 4 volleys per minute to the USS Missouri's 2.
1400mm is 1.4m is a 4.5ft diameter barrel.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/16%22/50_caliber_Mark_7_gun
Tornado has 8 turrets, each firing 4 shells per minute, for 32 rounds per minute. USS Missouri had 3 Turrets, with 3 guns each, firing 2 shells per minute, for 18 rounds per minute.
So, not quite double, no. However, yes, each tornado artillery barrel was over 3x the diameter of the Missouri barrels (406mm each)
The Japanese and German battleships were far more impressive, especially in their time, than the Missouri. Sorry Murica bros. |
