Hi Zube.
As long as you anchor the secure can in 0.7 (or is it 0.8?) sec or below then thieves can't get into it. If you leave it anywhere else the entire can could be scooped.
If you steal from another players jet can you become flagged to that player and they can take a shot at you for the next 15 mins without interference from concord. However, Concord will not attack you and your sec rating will not drop.

Cloaked Raven 4tw. It just LOOKS like the jetcan is unattended. Think about it.

Edited by: Zbop on 13/03/2006 09:27:23 About the question of what happens when you loot from some one else's can. You are flagged, the owner of the can and his gang can fire on you without sec loss, but they canÆt pod you cause Concord will then intercede. Honestly I have no problem with ore thieves as long as they are willing to have a civil conversation. I'm a casual miner, as I only mine when I only have an hour or so of time, so it's quick cash when I donÆt have time for serious game play.
However recently I've heard of Marco ore thieves, at first I thought this was just a rumor until it happened to me today. We saw this hauler kicking around I did my typical conv to haulers that warp to belts we are mining to say hi. The conv is accepted and I do my usual 'good morningÆ and no answer. I'm like wtf, it's the first time I've been ignored in a conv. So I try again, and keep talking then move on to smack talk just to see if I can get some response. Nothing. Then the hauler, after moving to each of the secure cans in the system, starts heading to our can. Well at the 15 km, mark we give our standard 'please go away' warning and at 10 launch our 20+ combat drones while our guard moves into kill position. At this point we're all thinking either this guys just foolish or it's some type of PVP trap.
Then some mentions it could be a Macro ore thief. Now how macro ore theft works is a macro'ed hauler comes up to the can and sets it self up for a warp to a station, or jump gate, when it finally lines up it punches it's drives and just before it hits the invincibility point of the warping process, snags as much ore as possible and zoom! No chance to scramble or jam. Our escort kept bumping him to try and keep him from warping but it still got away. So I'm angry, not because we were robbed but because we didn't even get a fight or a conversation out of it. So I warp after him since he just took off with about an hours worth of mining and there he is, heading to the gate with a shield booster running. Now I'm really mad. My scythe doesn't have enough firepower to punch through the shields, our 'guard' is too far away, because of a war all my combat ships are in a station 6 jumps away and were in 0.5 space to boot. I'm really mad since what little playing time I had was lost so I say **** it and go get my Rupture.
So I'm coming back with my Rupture and there is the ore thief cruising in his itty mark v. And heading back to the gate leading to the mining op. I'm like wtf. So I follow after him. Well one of our guys was hauling remain expensive stuff when this hauler warps back to our belt and starts doing it's rounds. So we all get set up, when the hauler gets to our nearly empty mining can, I throw down a second can right in its way and we wait. About five minutes later it gets flagged tries to warp bounces of my 'barrier' can and we open up. We now all feel really good and had fun with this little escapade. So the little pod go on its way and every one is happy. So I jump heading to dock, and what do I see but little macro miner undocking with another ship, and it's still flagged. So I open up blow up the second ship and laugh as the pod warps off to the jump gate to do its rounds.
Sorry for the long story but I thought it was funny and want to share. In the end with the flagging ore thieves when they loot cans, miners have the option to protect the can if you want to fight. As I only 'moonlight' as a miner I'm always up for a fight, even if it means that it might be a PVP trap. If it is even better, then I can gain combat experience. In the end if an ore thief is polite and is willing to have a pleasant conversation, I don't mind it so much. I view it as a good way to get to know people.
By the way, how do Professional Ore Thieves feel about macro ore thieves?
P.S. Thank you for the information guide. It is very informative for Thief and Miner alike.

Wow, macro ore thieves? Is that really possible?
I hope not....I have no time for Macro anything. Steal, scam, pirate, whatever you like but at least be sat in front of your PC playing the game, surely that's what it's all about, playing the game?

As a very new player to the world of EVE, not yet a month old, I have been trying to spend some time reading through these forums to learn about different career options. Mining and smuggling are of particular interest too me. After stumbling across this series, it is a sticky after all, I actually used it to learn about mining.
Now I have a couple secure containers, a little transport, and a buddy willing to haul for me at times. I would view jetcan mining as taking a shortcut that has certain risks. There may be times where I'm willing to take those risks, but if I see you Tenaj making off with my ore, then I guess that's business

Ahh i think a must read for ALL newbies and of course thiefs.
Please if you are stealing professionally do it with style..
Im missing a reply from Ceti who is based in oursulaert, hehe.
Ore thiefs are a part of the game and push ppl to other sectors(weee more neutrals in 0.0)
so carry on and maybe they should see thiefs as targets without being in 0.0 and making empire more fun .

Did someone call?
The path to true Cetiness is random.
You are only stealing from yourself if you don't take from a jet can.

I read this thread and I almost puked. I really don't see where ore theives deserve any kind of honorable mention in the world of EVE.
Mostly they prey on nubes, they don't prey on me or others like me because it is simply too easy to make countermeasures to them. I fail to see just what purpose they serve. Pirates on the other hand are like an evolutionary engine of EVE. They teach you to watch, they teach you to adapt and even have to adapt their tactics to you.
They don't have nerfed rules to protect them from me, like the 15 minute agression limit. They have to survive and are as often as not taken to task for their actions.
Ore theives are small minded, petty individuals that need the protection of the DEVs in order to survive in this game. Were the rules like what it would be in reality, they would be extinct with a quickness.
Nothing can be said that will uplift them from the bottom feeders that they are, and always will be.

Almost puked? That feels a little harsh but hey, you're entitled to your opinion.
Haven't players also had to adapt to Ore thieves? and with the introduction of can flagging, Ore thieves had to adapt as well? I spent as much, if not more, on my Occator and fittings than a ''pirate'' does on a BS and I certainly can't insure it for a fraction of the price.
If I take from your can you get 15 mins to kill me and claim my 24 mill bounty, and I'm left about 80 mill in the hole for the Occator. For a tin full of Veld I'd say that's not a bad offer.

Eve is a roleplaying game.
Thieves exist in real life, so they will certainly exist in an RPG if they are allowed to exist. If thieving from unprotected miners is the role people want to play, then why shouldn't they?
I get the usual "why don't you mine your own ore?" evemails, but the answer is, why should I? If there's a full can of ore floating around in space, sureley it's anyone's for the taking?
Just like an unanchored secure container is mine if I find it. If you leave it floating around, expect to have it stolen.

Completely with all the "it's just another part of the game" people, especially if it's backed up with a strong RP point too!
Something I've always wondered though is, do the 'proper' ore theives find it worth making off with ice, or just minerals? Is there anything you pass over totally (eg veld), or do you take the lot? |

If your not stealing for the ore, this thread shouldn't really apply to you...
Maybe they will bring out a sticky for "Ganking noobs, who don't know better, and everynow and then someone forgets about the new features" thread. That may help you |

Ore theft is a problem for miners who are 'hiding behind' an NPC corp. Corp miners don't suffer half as much. Stealing from someone in an NPC corp is zero risk. Stealing from a PC Corp is a dangerous activity.
Given the above you can either, 1. Stop using Jet-Cans 2. Live with the risk 3. Join a PC Corp and get safety in numbers 4. Get ORE to build you a Titan Mining Barge

Heh was wondering why it appeared there...thought it was one of the other Ore Theft 101 courses that fell off the face of the boards. ___________________________________________

I loved your posts and the responses were very interesting.
I stole someone's ore the other week and felt guilty. I have been roleplaying it on the Intergalactic Summit forum.
I have been trying to argue that ore theft is like podding someone. Just because there is no-one to uphold the law doesn't make it right.
Talk about condemnation. Apparently ore theft is like the ultimate sin. Nobody was willing to forgive me or give me a second chance. Zero tolerance. I was immediately kicked out of my corp. I was stunned.
Anyway, we'll see what happens. Check out the forum if you're interested.

Robbing have to be banned from this game (maybe not in 0.0 because it's a PvP zone)
Being a robber in a game is to encourage being it in real life, because it is easy and quick in real life. NOT the same as being a pirate in real life !!!! Think at that deeply !
Being a pirate in a game can be entertaining, but in a game ! not in real life. Being a robber in a game can be funny, and in real life too !!!
EvE is becoming to be a SHAME !
note: and please, don't tell me to use hundreds of those "huge" secure containers into the spot, that is not big enough to hold ONE TICK of my mackinaw (4 White glaze blocks per tick). I'm a freelancer, and I can't mine in group, so I can't defend myself. This game is going to be worst for me now :(
Give us bigger containers.
