Which do you prefer Torpedos or Cruise missiles and why...whats the main difference when used in real battle?

Torps are short range and do high damage to battleships. Crusiers are long range and do better damage to smaller targets (if you have trained guided misssile precision, othervice they do the same).

Torps. Cruise missiles are generally useless against NPCs because half of each volley gets blown up by defenders. Also, the damage vs. cruisers and frigs in PvP is not much different between cruise missiles and torpedos, but the damage vs. battleships definitely.
While cruise missiles have much longer range and higher velocity than torpedos, a turret ship far outstrips a cruise missile boat when it comes to long range combat (since turrets can actually kill frigs and cruisers and don't have to worry about flight time); hence, if I want to snipe, I go get my tempest.
All of this means that torpedos are pretty much the only truly viable weapon unless you're having fitting difficulties and NEED to use cruise. -Wrayeth

FoFability counts for something doesn't it?

True, but it all depends on how often you run into EW. Also, if you're jammed, all the scorpion has to do to make your FoF's useless is to send a pack of warrior drones to attack you. Most of your cruise will never hit, and the few that do will only kill one or two drones before your ship dies. -Wrayeth

Edited by: Nistro on 15/10/2005 11:40:38 yeah but cruise have to have some more points over torps since you require a higher lvl of missile ops to use the things (newb with missiles )
does it work useing both on setup or are u better going for one or the other?.

Largest advantage is range and speed.
At max skill torpedos go 2812.5 m/s, cruise go 8437.5 m/s.
And range for torpedos are 126.5 km and cruise 253.1 km.
But as you see the range for torpedos are VERY long for a short range weapon, only problem is that is takes them 45 sec to travel that distance while it only takes 15 sec for a cruise missile to travel the same distance.

dont forget ammo size, 0.6 m3 vs 0.3 m3, its a shame half my cruise missiles go down due to defenders.. i dont see turret ships getting disrupted.. wierd & annoying to be honest.. --- When It Absolutely Positively Has To Be Desotroyed. |

Well we turret gunners get this. [ 2005.10.14 20:38:18 ] (combat)Your 350mm Railgun II perfectly strikes Xevni Jipon, wrecking for 428.5 damage
[ 2005.10.14 20:38:24 ] (combat) Your 350mm Railgun II glances off Xevni Jipon, causing no real damage.

Well...I have a lot better missile skills and have been a caldari since birth, but I just recently started training for my tempest. I didn't even have the ability to use large guns not so long ago. Now I must say that apart from in the tanking department(tempest tank sucks ;) I outperform my old trusty. and much better equipped, raven quite easily. The thing is not that I do a lot more damage, but that I can actually do something about my problems when I have guns. I can move away with an afterburner to get range and shoot them with the 1400's or I can web and then kill things with autocannons. With cruise missiles and torps I'm stuck with the effect they have no matter what. The only good thing that can be done is move really close so they don't pick off half of your missiles with defenders.
Another things is that to me it seems the rats defenders pick off even my torpedos. I've had a bunch of fun against the finishing 2,5 mill rat on the vengeance mission level 4. He picked off 3-4 of my torps on the 50km run they had to make towards him...I really enjoyed trying to break his pretty good tank with two torps hitting from every salvoe

For NPCing: torps. Cruises get shot down by defenders and don't do more damage to cruisers than torps (drones take care of frigates, heavy drones mind you, and help against cruisers).
For PvP: torps. Cruises don't reach their target in time at long range and don't do enough damage, the only good situation is when in small gangs or 1vs1 at 60km+ when you have a full EW raven (only way to go IMHO).
Cruises have been improved since Cold War (they were plain useless before) and still need to improve. Since I don't think CCP can make them travel faster, they should at least have a much lower explosion radius so they can be even remotely as effective as large turrets against cruisers.
