Eh, close enough that it makes little difference. Where mudders have the average lifespan of a snowball in the heart of a sun, we just activate the thermal hardeners and tan a bit. Immortal? Close enough, and compared to the alternative I can't think of anything more resembling gods.
That's not even mentioning the softclones and all manner of nice little backups the more prudent among us maintain.

I do wonder about brain plasticity and aging with capsuleers. Consider, if you will, that clone bodies likely also suffer biological senescence, with the resulting loss of brain plasticity and neural degradation. A person who remains in a clone long enough to suffer this stage of senescence would likely have their 'elderly' or possibly even 'senile' personality transcribed onto a new clone. What effect would a new brain have on a senile mind-state?
I strongly suspect that given the decades and centuries to come, we'll have a rather new and strange set of psychological syndromes appear. |

I too agree with captain Rhiannon, we are far from inmortality. We've only existed for some amount of years now, we don't know what kind of problems may arise from long-term existing minds, captain Priano mentioned one example from an indefinite number. Or what might possible with the technology and the cloning stations, or whatever.
We may be more resilient than the average human, live longer lifespans and have better insurances, but we're still far from inmortals.

I'm told that one of the corps that recruits straight out of RIN has a capsuleer initiation where they sneak into the medbay, turn off your clone, then make you go out mining in an Impairor with only a mining laser fitted and nothing else and then they take potshots at you and shoot your armour off. If you can gather a full hold of veldspar without docking or ejecting you're in. That story could be crap to scare the new recruits after all it's just a rumour but it does demonstrate that mortality for capsuleers is a meaningful thing that exists. |

All it would take to remove the "im-" from that term in a most in-opportune way would be a clone tech still being a bit under the weather from booze-itis on Monday at the right moment.

Perhaps you are ill-prepared. Perhaps you have not yet had digital mind-maps stored in a heavily-protected citadel hidden away deep in space.
But there were once a people who did, and we are closer to understanding their technologies now more than ever. At this point if a capsuleer is intelligent, prepared, and a tad paranoid, there's really no excuse for them going out like this.

True... a combat pilot who's pod is destroyed once per year has a 30% chance of permanent death after only one century. After three centuries that becomes 90%.
And forget combat... what if you take up dirtside farming and only die of old age once every 100 years? Well that's still 30% every 1000 years.
So figure an average of about 3500 years, tops, before your number comes up. Impressive, yes. Immortal... not so much. And that's assuming that somewhere along the way you don't go completely insane and just kill yourself.
And consider this... how much memory can your brain hold? How much do you remember of the first year of your life? Not much? Keep that in mind because that's how much you're going to remember of this life right now after a century or two. Ask a five hundred year old capsuleer where they were born and they probably won't remember.
And then when you put all of this on a cosmic scale... planets and events that make a million years look like a tick of the clock...
In the end, we are all very very small creatures that only exist for a brief time. To the Universe, the difference between a hundred years and ten thousand isn't even worth noticing.
The day CCP codes together a bot program that slaps 30 day forum bans on anyone who says "can I have your stuff?" the overall average IQ of the EvE forums will quintuple overnight. |
