I get storyline missions on a semi-regular basis, but they're always for corporations I never have any dealings with. Is it possible to obtain a storyline mission for a corp (in my case, Caldari Navy) that the standings boost would actually benefit me somehow?

Yes it is. You just have to find an agent which is nearby a caladari navy storyline agent. For level 2 missions, I had found two locations meeting this criteria (command missions): Inoue and Vuorrassi (there's a caldari navy storyline agent 1 jump of Inoue, and one in Vuorrassi, with 2 command agents in each system, both being 0.5 systems - -9/7 in Inoue, -13/17 in Vuorrassi, but of course you'll be sent in some 0.4 quite often for your missions).
Anyway storyline missions, even for other corps, will always benefit you, as they increase your faction standing too (although less than the standing for the corp of the storyline agent). Findind storyline agents near regular agents is a good way to build standing up quite fast and access faster to higher level agents :)

Have been working with the Vuroawhatever agent, as there is also a level 3 agent there. There's another level 3 agent two jumps away in a 0.3 system if I feel brave, too.. it's a wonderful spot.
I guess I just have to wait and keep running these damn missions. Raises faction standing.. You mean with Caldari State? What does that do for me?

Heh, you still don'y always get a neary agent.
I run level 3 misison in Inout, but I get a 50/50 split of important missions being in Isaziwa and Veisto.

That lvl agent in vuorrassi is horrible, his rewards are lower than the lvl 2 due to their extreme quality difference.
Also, the system and those around it are terrible, and you shouldn't waste your time there.. honestly. I'm not just saying that so I can mission run in peace..

The simplest way to explain it is with an example. If your standing with the Caldari State is 6.5, that means that all Caldari corporations view you as 6.5 or higher, meaning you can access level 4 agents in all those corporations even if you've had no previous dealings with them. (The only big exception to that rule is research agents, where faction standing alone isn't enough.)
Also, every time your faction standing increases, your standing with related organizations also goes up. For example, if your standing with the Caldari State increases, so does your standing with Mordu's Legion. This ability to use agents in multiple corporations and factions is very convenient.

Same here (or not exactly but close). I run missions from torrinos, half my storyline mission are from a spaceland patrol guy in Ibura one jump away.
The other half is for a Poksu Mineral Group chick i Veisto (same as you) 12!!! jumps away. And 90% of the time I get a mission from the Veisto agent it doesn't show up in my journal like it should until I have gone there and talked to her, so I have no idea what kind of ship/equipment I should bring...

Watch your standings with Caldari Navy carefully and you will be pleasantly surprised :).
Monday - Ran 16ish missions from the lvl2 +19 PR guy in Iseinaros (sp?), got a storyline out of somewhere, the storyline agent was Poksu. After completing it, I didn't see any faction increase of note in the Caldari Navy Owner Info window (best agents before and after were lvl +3 and lvl3 0).
Tuesday / Wednesday - Ran 16ish missions from the same PR guy. Got a storyline out of Saila, the personnel guy for a corp I had never worked for before. Completed it, checked Caldari Navy Owner Info again. BAM!! Lvl3 +15, +14, +12 and more all of the sudden available.
Moral - don't worry to much about what corp the storyline guys work for as long as it improves Caldari State faction :). Good luck!

Log off and back on and it will show up.
