Exploration needs to be more challenging. But not in the scanning department.
Let's be honest here. Scanning is virtually identical to the previous system except they cut down on the clicking by a factor of 8. Which is good.
They've removed shooting red crosses from exploration in professional sites, which is good. If you want to shoot red crosses missions, anoms, plexes, and belts await the wrath of your mighty guns.
They've also made all of the most profitable scanning sites, with the exception of wh sites, trivial to do in a 2 week old alt. Which is bad. This kills the high end exploration income, and it kills the sustainability of exploration as a long term profession as supply of exploration products becomes super saturated.
In order to remedy this, the hacking minigame needs added difficulty. This can be in the form of traps that trigger upon failure (e.g. forcing the ship in question to light a cyno, trapping it for 10 minutes), or added difficulty/strategic requirements in the hacking minigame itself. |

How about it cancels your subscription when you fail to solve a minigame, thats what you had in mind before your cortex downvoted the more reptile parts of your brain, right?

"Exploration is the act of searching or traveling around a terrain (including space, see space exploration) for the purpose of discovery of resources or information"
They have removed the whole "searching" part of exploration.
Which for many of us was more fun than the "traveling" parts.

Exploration should require that you train skills and then learn how to equip and use a ship to find the sites that then need to be exploited. The challenge is what makes it fun and rewarding. Remove the challenge (and the barriers) and it just gets boring because it's too easy.
When I started playing eve I looked forward to the day I would have the skills and experience to get involved in things I didn't really understand or have the skills for. I would talk to more experienced corp mates because they knew a lot more than I did and I would learn something new on a daily basis.
"probes? what are they for? oh great I can go find stuff, ah ok need those skills, that will take time to train up for, I'll add that to my skill plan, can't wait to get involved in that". It kept me interested and it's why I stuck with eve and still play.
With the new system exploration requires you to jump into a system. All the sigs in a system then "slap you in the face" and announce, hey I'm here. I no longer have any interest in exploration. I doubt people new to eve will find it interesting for long.
I should also add that the discovery scanner is incredibly annoying when you have 10 jumps to make in tidi. I would be very interested to know how much extra load that adds to the servers when you have several large fleets moving around.

There are people regularly complaining about gate camps, getting ganked in hi-sec, scamming on the market, etc. Should CCP "fix" those as well?
I think there is critical mass swinging against some of the new exploration mechanics. I hope CCP revisits it. |

Now it's almost a "press this button to get the exploration site revealed" edit: I was happy infofar as the mechanics. Needed more content...like everything else though.
Um... As opposed to press a button 8 times for the same result? All ccp did was speed up the process. It use to be:
Get in system, uncloak, launch 7-8 probes, get to safe. Setup probe formation. Expand to largest scale. Scan. You see what's there.
Now it's: Get in system, ser what's there. Move on or pop probes, which is now 1 click instead of 7-8, and probes are in formation. Scan down site.
So basically, you are complaining because ccp increased the ease of use, reduced clicks, and means you get to a site faster. More time spent running sites instead of probing them. And that is a complaint? Tell you what, launcher your probes and recall them 4 times, and always do your first probe in a spread formation at 32 au. You are back to the old system. Me and most of us would rather get to the site.
As for skills, it's slightly easier, but by what a week? Two? Any amount is negligible in the length of a character training plan. You spend more time on fitting skills. Plus, unless you had maxed skills, you gained on this.
So really, why the complaint? Is it the changes or just youeittle slice of eve is open to more people? My guess is the latter. As for most of us, we like the change. |
