I don't know about you, but when I pay for internet, I pay for what my line is provisioned for as per the agreement in the contract. And if there's significant downtime, they credit me time for it. I wrote some true EVE stories! And no, they're not of the generic "my 0.0 alliance had lots of 0.0 fleets and took a lot of 0.0 space" sort. Check them out here:

It's not my job to know. I'm simply paying money to be provided a service. If CCP wants me to explore possibilities of DDoS mitigation, they will have their HR department contact me to discuss an employment contract. I wrote some true EVE stories! seeing as you clearly have not actually read the EULA even though you agreed to and accepted it's contents
here's the relevant section for you
i'll even underline the pertinent parts, that you just don't seem to understand

Murder is a special case in the legal realm. The victim or murder, or death in general, has his outstanding debts and legal agreements for the most part annulled upon the event. However, if the victim was part of a company that is its own separate legal entity, the company must still fulfill its contractual obligations, even if it has to work in a reduced capacity because it lost a key member.

Intranet: Easy to protect. Internet/open: Not as easy. And never at 100%.
I'm not a blind fanboy, but I don't know what all the fuzz is about in all these recompensation topics.
They already announced they will recompensate EVE & DUST players and if I remember right last time something like this happened they gave players the game time they lost, EULA or not.
What I see is there are a lot of players, drawn into EVE by all the boons and new "egalitarian" stuff they put into the game, making everything easier. And somehow that must have drawn all the whinies...
I have three new players in my corp who never heard of EVE Radio or who don't go to the forum or twitter. And that actually is the majority of players! So they didn't know the background until I told them, which made them understand it was out of CCPs control at that moment, guilty or not.
So think of the damage this has done to CCP because people choose to be uninformed & just don't care about the background. But they do love to shout at this perceived "injustice"...
Let me also add that this "hardcore consumer rights" approach is just stupid... You rent a car, sometimes despite all the maintenance the engine breaks down. Go to Walmart or call the next customer support for your favorite EBook reader/Smart Phone, whatever to get some steam off.
I don't say they should not recompensate. But it is tiring to watch players bursting out in rage for nothing. As: Once again, they already said they would!
Examples: "Mimimi... My 50K skill points... I'm new... It is because they want to keep the older guys strong..." - Sure... That is why they have done nothing but built cradles for the noobs... Making EVERYTHING easier.
"Mimimi... I paid for thirty days, now I only get 29..." - HTFU! Sometimes you marry someone for a lifetime... Happens sometimes that lifetime together only lasts a year. Shyte happens!
I sometimes think some people play the wrong game altogether.... The ones who understand it better were at the right places, laughed some together, had fun. And now are back in space. |

A DDoS attack that's large enough can and will bring a service its targeting down. There are very very special cases when this doesn't happen. For example, let's take Cloudflare for instance. They can help mitigate HTTP(S) traffic and did very well for being hit by ~10 Gbit/s of useless traffic.
How did they do it? Because of balancing and geographics. The protocol doesn't care how long it takes to fetch a webpage as long as it fetches. Time-sensitive games like EVE, on the other hand, do. CCP's cluster is in one location and granted, probably serviced by multiple upstream providers like any datacenter would be. Because of how the cluster works it requires low latency (as in, single digit ms or less) between nodes, and you can't do that with cross-country links.
There are companies that specialize in mitigation (awknet, for example) that can help to filter the type of traffic CCP sees. But again, you're routing traffic through another service which increases latency. Plus, that sort of filtering may not even work for them.
In the end, it's understanding that no company is immune to being attacked by this sort of thing, and the customers should also be aware of this. CCP was very transparent about all of this and granted 30 hours is nothing in the grand scheme of things. There are no SLA agreements and you're not losing untold thousands of dollars like a website host would if their datacenter went down and had to keep a 99.99% SLA. |

I'm afraid reality is a little bit different. Some things are simply beyond control, that's life.
Also, when we protest as a community, CCP is willing to comply. That's not very common for companies in today's world. The respectfull thing to do for us as a community is back CCP all the way in this, whatever happens.
An attack like this can have a few reasons. One is to try and steal money somehow and another is to destroy a company from its base and the community around it because of butthurt feelings. When CCP makes sure they can't get any payment details and steal money from us, we can also stand together and behind CCP on this making sure that stays as one too. It means the attackers will loose anyway, regardless what they have planned.
+ 1 huge middle finger towards the attacker. My gut keeps nagging me that it is a corporate war funded thing. example scenario: "Blizzard" pays N. Korea to initiate attack. That is a stylish tinfoil hat you have there sir.
Espionage, including corporate espionage has existed throughout history. Can you breathe alright with your head so deep in the hole?
Do you think a bunch of kids that play Dust has the resources or discipline to pull down a multimillion dollar company while simultaneously sidestepping government safeguards? |
