What i don't want to see is it being dumbed down and made more "pretty" for us.
I'd ask you to marry me but I'm already married lol.....women are no different from men they are as competitive and just as cut-throat as we are, my wife doesn't play this and tbh I wouldn't change eve to make her want to play it's just not her thing......to the women who do play and especially the ones who put up with our phallus jokes and beavis and butthead behaviour on comms I salute you

Quote:This seems a little unfair to CCP IMHO. CCP didn't design this game to cater for anyone in particular, they just designed a game they liked. It was then mostly males who chose to play it. What I would agree with is that there are unfortunately way too many sexist morons in Eve and other MMOs who are bang out of order with the way they treat female gamers. I think anonymity and socially ill adjusted men are a bad combination and give the rest of us a bad name. On the flip side, I would point out that it is very difficult to integrate a female into a male only corp and not always for the reasons you might think. The truth is that, online or in RL, a group of guys interact and socially bond through the medium of mutual insults, vulgarity and generally ripping on each other. I've had my sexuality questioned (several times ), my intellect ridiculed, my accent made fun of for being too posh, my in game abilities trashed and a multitude of other things in the many corps I've been in and I am very happy when it starts because it means the corp have accepted me and feel relaxed enough to bring me in. Now, I'm sorry ladies, but a lot of women don't seem to react to male banter in the same way as guys do and so any attempt to treat them "as just one of the guys" is met with frosty silence and/or anger and that's not just limited to Eve by the way. Also, I'm not talking about sexist comments, but any other sort of joking insult is taken personally. Perhaps it's a social thing but men don't take themselves anywhere near as seriously as women do which is why a group of males behave in a totally different way to a group of females. It might also explain why there are so few female comedians...
I would like to clarify something. I enjoy male banter, and often participate. Many women do. There is a difference between male banter and bashing a specific group of people, whether the comment be one of race, gender, sexual preference, body type etc. And it's different when you're obviously joking.
When there's an entire conversation going on about how women are too stupid, or too soft, or too weak(really? should we type stronger or something? lol) to play EVE properly, or a 20 minute discussion on how women are evul b*tches who suck the life out of you, or the knuckle dragging nerd who probably never spent real time with a non-inflatable woman's sexual conquest stories - this is different. It's unpleasant, unattractive, and quite frankly, it's r3tarded(and I mean developmentally delayed, stupid forum profanity filter)
Please note - certain women do this too, in reverse, and it's equally r3tarded. I choose not to participate in this either.

I play another sandbox MMO with a relatively high number of women (I think 30%+). But in there, the environment is more relaxed, it's more craft friendly (less competition, less junky UI...), it's much more of a cooperation game, more constructive things happen.
It's easy to see how EvE is not this and thus it does not appeal to them.

Mind if I ask why? Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't mind having more women around in EVE but to be quite honest I couldn't care less and I don't see why anyone would. If you want to stalk random strangers, facebook is somwhere over there -->.
What EVE needs is to be an enjoyable game (and possibly to revert the Navy Comet's paint job, just saying), the women who care about Internet space ships are much more likely to enjoy that rather than something that's tailored to a bunch of clich+¬s and false stereotypes.
Admittedly there are lots of players with a distinct lack of social skills but personally I try to avoid them and their corps and I'm sure our female space-nerds are perfectly capable of doing the same. darmwand Repossession Agent http://www.repo-corp.net/ Recruitment is OPEN |

You are absolutely right and I too would not consider making lurid or sexist comments "male banter" as I tried to make clear in my first post. I was just pointing out that, for whatever reason, quite a lot of the women I have met seem unable to understand how the banter works (or even realise that it is JUST banter) and take offense at stuff that any male player would have laughed about.
That said, there are a few women I have met who do get it and I am very happy to fly with them and would be delighted if one of them joined my corp. It sounds like you could be one of them Silfar |

I like Andie Nordgren's comment in the linked article. It's "more an indicator than something [to] strive for." , and I think this is a good attitude for CCP to have at this time.
In my opinion most players would be conscious the actual number of characters who are female in real life is low.
In relation, I'm amused that:
- As CCP has to rely on the honesty of players when they create their account (with regard to whether they are male or female), their stats on this could easily be wrong. I'm not sure why players would say they are something they are not, but my point is it is possible some players don't answer truthfully for whatever reason.
- it is not unusual to hear of male players who give gifts of ISK and ships to female characters if they have a cute/ sexy female avatar.
- I've heard a male player boasting publically about pretending to be a women (through the use of a voice changer) so he can 'scam' gifts from male players who want to give stuff to female characters.
- Male players with cute/sexy female avatars do get hit on by other players, and they then have to decide whether to play along with the myth or out themselves as a bloke.
At the end of the day, it doesn't matter if a player is male or female, it just matters they: a) can play the game, and b) feel their skills are respected, and c) are not treated differently from other players.

What, exactly, would be CCP's motivation to make that number up?
It's not really all that surprising, given the reputation of the playerbase, and that virtually every mainstream gaming and real media story about EVE involves some massive douchebaggery. |

I remember there was an initiative of an EVE-blogger (name eludes me, sorry!) who felt the need to reach out to women
What I thought was "Well I hope you don't come up with a vanity solution"
CCP shouldnt change the game itself , it's perfectly going in the way it should. Pilots, whether PvP, PvE care more about the game being stable, enjoyable than your gender.
The attitude of a fair few boys/men is what can be frustrating playing as a female . They really lack some perspective and 'general' manners and its quite condecending and be-littleling at times. I (try) to just live with it and go with the flow because I'm not the type to scream and shout about it but I'm not giving up my identity because the game's harsh environment lends itself more to douchebags (Was a rude awakening to realize it)
4 more 'silly' things: * When you talk to guys personally they get a lot more mellow, vulnerable and reasonable. Its as if they dont have to compete for a moment. Same in RL really, but keeps surprising me * The boob-slider is a guy's fashion sense. *I can be very nice and understanding, flexible and it's appreciated. But don't cherrypick please. Territorial, vengeful, planning and annoyed by the slightest things. Yes, I know those feelings and I can assure you dont want a 50/50 game (unless you like to go *beep* insane) *Despite knowing a few other women in-game I prefer meeting up with friends in RL. If I talk ingame to them its mostly about.....spaceships! Ofcourse some chat about RL but it isnt a nail-polish clique

This game is boring, repetetive, fairly abstract and rather time-consuming. What you can accomplish with your time investment is either piling up fake money or pixel ship kills, both completely meaningless even in-game, or, in rare cases, a certain degree of celebrity status among a bunch of fat smelly men suffering from Asperger's. Some might say you can make all sorts of experiences playing Eve but for the most part the experiences Eve gives you are about repetition, tedium and being a sad jerk while interacting with the very limited set of people who are mentally disabled enough to waste their time and money on this game. In fact, just spending one or two days outside probably gives you a wider array of quality experiences than a year of playing Eve extensively. And conversation with other players is usually restricted to nerdy tech babbling, grunting, bawling and making fart sounds with your armpits.
So, why in hell would women play this game? I don't even know why men play it. |

WiS would have appealed to women.
Seriously.
I recall my Ex who played WoW and she was just as much into the appearance of her "toon" as she was adept at playing the actual game.
And, from my experience training women in the firearms world, if you teach them how to deal with stuff that they find scarey, they will follow your instructions TO THE LETTER. This is why female students were always better shots.
So, if there was a drive to bring women to the game, and PROPERLY guide them in PVP (yes, PVP), they might actually enjoy it.
Because if there is one thing a woman cannot stand (having trained scores of them and having been raised an only son in a "hive of daughters") , it would be the way noobs are told so little about this game and then getting OMGWTFPWNGANKED by some aspergian loser saying "Boom! Headshot! Phag GBTW loser! Ha ha!". You see, the women won't want to play that kind of game with that kind of person because they usually know better than to sink to that level. This is why they pay lower car insurance in the real world, as an example. When the guy in the Datsun B210 tries to race them, they ignore him, you see.
So I think that the basis of giving the women something they like (and the fashion engine that WiS is will appeal to a lot of them) and not letting the game continue to be a "he who is most neckbearded and least of having a life wins" will bring them to the game.
Yeah yeah I know. But the killboard! My stats! It's a sandbox! Marsha Marsha Marsha! All that other crap. Some of you guys should try viewing yourselves from the outside if you can stand it.
Sadly, a stricter policy of harassment or ways to mitigate it would also be needed because some of your neckbeards don't know how to act when a woman is present. Seriously I have heard of some horror stories from hacker/tech conventions. Pathetic. Maybe you shouldn't try to see yourself from the outside as the knowledge of knowing how pathetic you are would kill you out of sheer disgust.
Otherwise, this game is going to continue to be a raging sausage fest. And if some of you are proud of that, you might want to reconsider your sexual preference. |
