yeah sounds like the copied over what planetside was supposed to be and mixed them both together... the result?
now both planetside and SWG suck. Could have been good games but SOE ruined them. Planetside beta was the most fun ive ever had gaming, retail however is as dull as a rock.

Edited by: Corair on 06/11/2005 11:43:31 I actually went on the Test Centers last night and today and it's just horrid. I left due to the Combat Upgrade (what a joke) and now... now I don't even know what to say other than "what the hell were they smoking?" Thought this quote was funny, though:
"When Sony and Lucas set out, we said, 'How can we do this and not make another EQ?' We didn't want it to be all about Luke, or combat, or lock our players into a class. So we created a system that would allow players to switch professions during the game, and there would be a lot of gameplay around making that change. If you want to go from architect to scout we've created a system to make that happen." -Julio Torres
Right now there's flashy special effects, 9 classes that you can't change out of, pictures of the main "iconic" characters for each of those classes (Luke is on the Jedi class) and it's all 3rd person shooting combat now. I laughed, I cried, I even died a little bit on the inside...
Edit: Oh ya, here's a site with screenshots of the "skill trees" which there is zero customization: Linkage --------
I would love to change the world, but they won't give me the source code. |

You realy have to feel for those that play it.
"the game is moving from the 34 class mosh pit of skills down to a focused 9 iconic classes. There will be some concessions to players that have been around for a long time, but it'll be up to the players to decide whether these concessions are enough to keep them interested."
Kick in the teeth or what, to those that stayed on after the combat upgrade.
tbh those that are still kicking around playing will probaly continue to do so purely because of the addiction.
But in the future id imagine that people will avoid starting up with a Soe mmorpg, i know i wouldn't even consider it after what iv'e seen them do with this. ----------- When they asked me if i knew you, id smile and say you were a friend of mine.

True, but you're also missing the key issue for a TON of players - they JUST released a payed expansion that promised loads of content based on the CURRENT system that the NEW system doesn't even contain (they've completely done away with the Creature Handler profession and did a revamp of the profession and added items specifically for Creature Handlers in the PAID expansion!) People are outraged that SOE would keep such a thing in the dark while making endless promises about what they were going to do with the current system.
There is already a class action lawsuit being filed by a few on grounds of unethical business practices among other things. When your players are suing you each time you screw with them, wouldn't you get the hint? "Star Wars: An Empire Divided" isn't far off... --------

Well sure i was unaware of that, my post was about principles on the way they treated their commited players and not much else.
If they did go as far as claiming content on the box of a paid expansion yet knew all along that these changes would negate all of that, then on ethic alone, id be outraged, and that would just bolster my previous comment.
I don't pretend to know the legal issues of this, so i realy can't comment above what iv'e allready said, that being it's just poor showing from sony online, and it doesn't enhance their future image.

Let's review though....Lucasarts, been know to make a good game or two here and there, but mostly games that feel rushed and incomplete it's like they looked at them and said "meh good enough"
SoE...nuff said,as long as they can continue to push out expansion after expansion (with the same price of the actual game mind you) and sell them, they couldn't give a toss about what's going on in, at, or around their games.
So is this really a surprise after all?
My two cents.

Edited by: Slink Grinsdikild on 06/11/2005 17:15:17 EQ2 is shrinking, Planetsides devteam was cut back by 70% since release and now this..
Looks like they're not doing too well financially, and rightly so. Companies like SOE, Mythic and EA are money grabbers. They will crank out broken expansions for their games almost every year, which in the end makes it totally unplayable.

Sony Online Entertainment is making new strides in the MMOG industry. Advancing on the paradigm that it is possible to make people pay to be beta testers, SOE in their game Star Wars Galaxies is now making people pay to be alpha testers.

You know the #1 problem with SWG is, why this wont be any better than what came before. They have no passion for their game. They are making the changes strictly for monentary reasons. Not to make the game better, Not to fix whats broken, Not to make an improvement, Not to increase enjoyment, Not to make the game more fun to the people playing it or others comming into it, And not to make something different.
I wanted so bad to have SWG as my second MMOg I'm a very big fan of the SW universe. But you know what it was at its basic, AO with a different skin. Just another MMO just like all the ones before it.
Yes, I'm sure some of the writters, programers, coders, artists have a real passion for SW. But for the people who make decisions.."Hey look at SW universe lots of people like the movies and books. Lets do a MMO and make millions - Hmmm let use EQ as the model keep costs down and we know people like it." (Lack of imagination 4tl) *Three years later* Our subscriptions are down on all our SOE games (yeah, dumbasses they are all clones just with different skins. Lack of imagination 4tl) Lets see what is successful. - (at the moment) - Ahh lets copy Guild Wars -Who cares if people have invested 2 1/2 years of monthly payments . - F'em! - (Lack of imagination 4tl...dumbasses)
They will never get it. As more and more people find EVE (you just dont see it advertised like other MMO's) it will get bigger and bigger because, It is different, It is enjoyable, It is an improvement compared to whats out there, Its not broken, (bugs yes, but not broken) It is a better game. And most important,
CCP has passion for what they created

Sad. I was't a heavy Galaxies player 'till Jump to Light Speed. I had been in the original beta and didn't like it. Knew the game wasn't ready.
The space expansion made me pick it up finally. It was a lot of fun, but player created content was always the key. Not sure how CCP pulls if off better here. I think becaue we have better tools.
I played until after the recent Rage of the Wookies expansion. When Planetside (one of my all time favs) added advertising to the in-game walls, I canceled my Station Pass subscription and re-directed that cash to EvE again. Happy I did.
Maybe this will be a good thing for Galaxies in the long run. Too bad for the long timers, but I really liked the "sandbox" feel it had before...looks like that's gone now. I'll try the 10 day thing, maybe in December, but I have EvE, City of Heroes, and World of Warcraft to keep me busy enough for now.

I agree with this entirely, and I think it's the reason Eve Online is as good and popular as it is. Few dev teams take such an interest in their project, and give and take as much feedback from the player community. Saying that, I believe Eve could be a lot better, balanced and bug free, but the main thing with any MMO is the simple fact that it's MM...massively multi-player. There are maybe over 50k players in Eve, so to keep many people happy I think sometimes CCP has taken a "cop out" route rather than risk alienating too many.
Any criticisms aside, though I've never played SWG, as tempted as I have been as a fan of the genre, from the sounds of it I'm very glad for that, and makes me infinitely glad that it's CCP coding Eve and not SOE. Eve wouldn't be near as enthralling and fun as it would be without them and the mature community that play it (for the most part). -------------

This is what happens when the game company cares more about making money than about making a quality game.
I played SWG from shortly after release up until about last February, and I can tell you that this news doesn't surprise me in the slightest. After about the first five months, the game went totally to ****, with the devs swinging the nerfbat left and right with no regard for the consequences, subsequently also boosting some classes to a ridiculous level. I thought the missile changes in EVE were unbearable...until I remembered what happened to Commandos in SWG (don't get me wrong, I believe the EVE missile changes went a bit overboard, but...well, damn...). -Wrayeth

Indeed, I missed Beta PS, but loved the game until recently. Then I can here and found the beauty of brutal, unforgiving PVP. But PS will always remain on my comp, if only for the icon. :P
And yes, SOE screw it AND SWG up, but I think SWG moreso.

The Warhammer MMORPG (based on WFRP rather the WFB) was in development for several years before being dropped about a year ago.

I've learned after EQ2 and SWG to NEVER, EVER buy another game put out by Screw Over Everyone.
I met the EQ2 Devs at E3 and I was shocked at how clueless these tools were. None of them knew what the other was doing. They constantly had to ask eachother for answers to my questions etc.
SOE is a **** company ran by a **** CEO, Smelly.
Whats funny is SOE is coming out with an MMORPG that is FREE. But they wont yet say what it is.
It's pretty funny when your company sucks so bad at puting out MMO's that you finally have to make them free so people MIGHT play them.

Yeah, I think part of the problem is when they released the expansion, they touted new items for a specific class, Creature Handler that would allow them to control higher level pets. Guess which class is not part of the 9? We all know how long it takes to code these kind ofchanges.
So, even before the new expansion hit the shelf this was being done, so one could really get them on false advertisement, at least for 14 days.
The expansion hit on say a monday and the changes were announce on say a Thursday. Interesting, isn't it.
And yes, I agree with the poster who said that CCP has passion for their game. They will continue to get my money and possibly ad second and thrid account!

Ha! To add insult to injury, they're adding another Space Expansion shortly (vid from the FanFest I believe): Linkage
Not official yet, but the forums pointed that their expansion page is updated with a cryptic message about space expansion. My poor friend stuck with the game through the Combat upgrade with a whopping 7 accounts, all updated with the expansions. He's gonna end up quitting in a few days with no compensation for all his money and efforts.
I'm gonna try to get him to come here to play --------
