Here's my idea for this:
Instead of having every match have identical ruleset (bring anything and everything), why not have set ship size guidelines that ramp up over the entire tournament? Instead of just playing these showmatches in the time between the Bo5 finals, spread them between the two studio weekends during as a start to the intermission (a halftime show if you will), culminating in the final day showmatches where everything is allowed.
Basically, the way it is now I dont think we will see anything particularly interesting or entertaining like 12v12 noobships or 12v12 t1 cruisers because everyone will just bring out their big guns. Adding in more matches with more specific rule guidelines both gives interested groups with smaller budgets an opportunity to compete without getting totally wrecked, as well introduces more parity so the matches are more entertaining for both the players and viewers.
I think it is perfectly feasible to have 2+ showmatches per day, even if you just do one at the start of the intermission and after the end of the scheduled broadcast, without having too big of a drain on the EVEtv resources. Just get a couple of the backup casters/community devs to cast these so the main ones can have a break.
Something like this perhaps:
July 27 [Frigate Frenzy]: Match1 - Noobships Only /// Match2 - Frigates and below only July 28 [Cruiser Calamity]: Match1 - T1 cruisers and below only /// Match2 - All Cruisers and below
August 3 [Battle Royale]: Match 1 - Battlecruisers and below /// Match2 - Battleships and below August 4 [Capital Cataclysm]: All Matches - Whatever you want (If 3 matches are able to go, maybe do first one without supercapitals)
If even more matches than this are able to go through, you have fun options like Industrials only (with TiDi) or mono-race throwback matches like 12v12 in Thoraxes or Rifters. The possibilities really are endless for this thing and it seems really really fun.

At most we'll be looking for 2-3 matches, all on the last Sunday.
Welp
Still think controlling the shiptypes would be the better/more fun option, just because I want to see an outright brawl without any of the theorycrafting and metagame from the main tournament, not just see some poor battleships get demolished by carriers or something similar. |
