We got to chatting in coldfront #eve-online, and it seems quite a few of us geeks were into this fine tabletop wallet-breaker of a game. I stopped playing roughly around the time I discovered girls, as this game is anti-sex itself, but I'd like to hear back from others who played it - especially if you have army pictures ;)

nice painting... i used to collect eldar. then got bored with them as they were ****e. so moved to S. Marines. then demonhunters. Every so often ill buy a pack of maries & see what i can convert em into. last batch i turned into samurai marines. turned out ok in the end. Meh. 's all too expensive. ---------------

Edited by: Mimiru on 07/11/2005 21:48:08 Yeah awsome painting, especially the blending on the power weapons :) Though im disturbed to see the same color scheme on your chaos as is on my Marines (Glory to the god-emperor, ect)
Started about 6 years ago or so, stopped about 3 years ago. Picked it up with few of my friends that used to play last winter when a hobby shop opened close to me. Stopped by the start of summer, and managed to not buy more than a few new paints (luckily)

Used to play back when I was like 13, and before my older brother went off to uni. Warhammer Fantasy though.
I had an undead army. Older brother had skaven. Little brother had orcs, purchased a huge army on eBay for like ú250.
Also played: Warhammer 40k (mk6 armour 4tw!) Space Hulk Hero's Quest Man o' War Blood Bowl (get BBowl online) Mighty Empires
Last one on that list 0wn3d, especially with the extended ruleset where you fought battles with Warhammer Fantasy and Man o' War.
Parts that ****ed me off royally, was realising that chicks don't dig warhammer, and the fact that they recycled a lot of stuff. By that I mean they would heavily push something for 2 years, drop it for 4, and then bring it back again with enough changes to warrant another ú100 on new rulebooks and starter sets.
Mighty Empired 0wn3d.

Not only did I play, I worked for GW for 4 years. As they sell lead to staff at weight cost, I bought a lot, and still have most of it unpainted in the attic. Haven't played since my son was born, but I did dust off BLoodbowl the other day thinking he might be old enough to play it now.
One of the Golden Demon winning figures also has my name (my real name) secreted on his banner because the chap who painted him used to use my shop, and I complained he's been in White Dwarf more than me! I'll see if I can find a link.
Oh and I have, Orcs and Gobbos, Dark Elf, Lizardmen, Dark Angel, Eldar, Imperial Guard, Epic Eldar and Epic Imp G. plus others (like I say staff got it rock bottom prices when I was there).
MMmmmmm 40k id fun, although it was always my opinion that Fantasy and Epic were the real men's games.

Well I never Tyto... didn't take you for a GW nerd, although somehow it didn't surprise me that Istavaan was
and yes, I was one at one stage as well.... we started back when they were lead, before the rules and regulations changed to make em start using "white metal", which put the cost through the roof.... but then GW were always all about making nerds pay through the nose to look nerdy
Dark Future, Blood Bowl, 40k, Adeptus Titanicus (one of my favourites), Warhammer ( Battle and RP), you name it, I've probably played it.

Deva: I live near Toronto, Canada.
I notice a few folks have worked for Games Workshop - has anyone figured out how the GW guys take snapshots of their models to make them look the way they do in those Golden Demon pictures? I tried screwing with my digicam's macro mode, but the pictures are still a little iffy - it's 5 megapixel, and the macro mode seems to crap out regardless at the close ranges I'd like to be taking my miniatures' pictures.

Hmm... Those bottles in the back of your termies - they do seem familiar... very familiar :) Tought you were from Poland :)
Nevertheless - try to put sheet of paper under your models and then bend it so it also becomes a background. You have to chose good colour (usually bright for darker models and vice-versa). Bright blue, green, purple are good colours for this (and usually work well with all models). Then just pray your camera focuses properly on model :)
Will post some pics of my models later...

Deva Blackfire
|
Posted - 2005.11.07 23:43:00 -

NEVER use flash! Just use lamp/lightbulb (or even 2-3) from different places so it eliminates model's shadow and illuminates (not sure if it is a good word) parts you wish to show on the picture.
Im using only one lamp atm because i don't have any means of installing another one in my room, but it is usually enough.

Yep, painted them myself. The models didn't set me back too much, as I bought some of them used really really cheap, stripped them and repainted them. I think I blow more on booze and pot in three months than I did in my two or three years playing 40k.

The miniatures were cheaper, too.

and still play other PnP RPGs. So any RPrs out there , put out a shout! I've been wanting to do more RP in Eve for ages.

i spent way too much @ GW, thenn i gotta computer n waste my money on mmog's :/
40k:
Space wolves: easily field a 9,000-12,000 pt army. Imperial Guard - Praetarian (limited edition), Mordian Iron Guard? or simalar named. 3,000-5,000 pt army.
Warhammer:
Bretonians: (sp) 3,000-4,000 pt army. Chaos: 2,000 pt army.
BloodBowl: Undead.
Gorkamorka or sumin O.o.
Then theyre was Space Hulk, and a small "40k epic" eldar army.
i was **** at playing the game :/ but was fun at the time.

Bought a imperial Gurad army played 12 games won all 12 and thought it was the most boring army ever.
loved fantasy battle early edition like early 1980's for all you young people when yopu could actually tell your regiments to form wedges and lines and all that stuff instead of just blocks.
Also used the realms of chaos books and used the warbands system from them which was really awesome.
Rogue trader rules for 40k ever see a scout squad take down the elder avatar? Graviton guns FTW :)
Sadly the games now days from games workshop are for the kids and dont involve any stratigic thinking.
If you want strategic games play some of the Avelon hill boardgames or the likes of Ogre ( steve Jackson games ) or Babylon 5 wars ( Agents of gaming ).
Example of current games workshop games Player 1: rolls D6 Player 1: I get a 3 Player 2: rolls D6 player 2: I get a 2 player 1: woot i win!! Player 2: no way I get a re-roll says it here in paragraph 27 subsection 12 Player 1: WTF?

I had a small Ultramarines army in 40k but mainly played Space Marine and Warhammer FB
Space Marine: Squats (land train 4tw!) Chaos Marines
Warhammer: Dwarves Undead Chaos
My last project was a roman-style army based on the dogs of war regiments they released and then sold off cheap through mailorder when people didn't buy them much - that project stopped halfway and I have had a large crate of unpainted models sat in my flat for 5 years or so. :)

I don't like to think about the huge amount of money I dropped into that game.
I had a SM army (2 heroes, 10 terminators, 60-70 troopers, 2 dreads, bike squad, 2 land speeders, 3-4 tanks) A tyranid swarm (2 princes, 2 carnifex, 150+ other varied types) I even bought a whole Tau army of approximately the same size, but I never had time to assemble and paint it, and I resold it all later...
The worse is, I played maybe a dozen times total.
Damn, all that money for so little use, Damn GW for creating such a game and overpricing it.
Now, I simply play Dawn of War.
