I am glad you are enjoying your EVE experience. It is always fun reading new player's perspectives on the game, and all the advice from everyone.
A few things...first, do what you want. Second, EVE is not just about the game. Read the fiction, check out EVE Radio, check out EVE News sites.
Have fun. |

People freaking out about what happens in a video game? Yeah, that does make me all kinds of happy.. I can tell because I'm laughing so hard. I once ganked a guy who then came to the forums to cry. That was the best.
Me I've been ganked a few times, lost some ships while fighting. Never cried. Just learned. I usually ask the pilots that beat me how they did it or what I could have done differently. Everyone I've asked has been cordial and helpful. The same way I am to anyone who asks when their ship suddenly explodes when I'm nearby. Totally! Fitting jsodef with a giepjpr is a total noob mistake. Every self-respecting PVP-er can tell you to fit jsodef with a duel hkalas ntfoftag and only 1 F235 fjeies because tzrqt lasers eat cap and the giepjpr will leave you with only half of that EHP after running for 4.7 secs and your tank will break. Simple? Heck if you don't get this HTFU go play WoW or something jeez... |

This is pretty much the best description of being a newbie in Eve that I have ever read. Its always great seeing people ask for advice and get huge bodies of text full of terminology that newbies would have no idea what 90% of it meant. Good luck with the learning curve, its fun!

This one will really get you both laughing:
Yesterday I opened my skill queue to reorder and I *think* I inadvertently drug all the rest of the queue into one skill, ie: Frigate 5. Now it shows 8 more days to train and a total of some 500K+ SP. I also can't train anything else now because none of them now fit in the queue.
Yeah, I know.
How do I undo this mess? I can't find a way to open the Frigate 5 and drag the rest back out. Untutored courage is useless in the face of educated bullets. Gen. George S. Patton |

If you drag long skill to the beginning of the queue, it will push other skills out from the queue. If you want to train something that's shorter than 24 hrs, drag it to the beginning of the queue.

Echo Echoplex wrote:I just subbed a couple of days ago (hi everyone) after a 2 wk. trial but only a few hours of that used, so I have zero idea what I'm doing. Meanwhile I've been reading, reading, reading to try and lessen the learning curve, and have seen so many Disillusioned-I-Quit posts from people who've seemingly played quite awhile and I just don't get it. I can see quitting for various reasons: time management problems, frustration with the learning curve/yourself and your own inabilities, eventual boredom, lack of money, and yes, even personal conflict with the politics of the game, but what I don't understand is quitting because the game proved itself to be what it was when you signed on. In a game that's remarkably complex it's the one aspect that seems so simple and transparent. I have no idea what I want to do or be yet and I won't be surprised if I rage or pittykitty when I get scammed, betrayed, podded repeatedly, etc. but I see this game essentially as an rpg for every person who plays it. Even if you spend your time trading out of game, you're playing that role. You can play the role of a benevolent and helpful pilot who aspires to elevate and educate, you can play the role of the biggest as*hat who ever walked the face of the earth, you can play it as anything in between, or even both simultaneously. It's the wild wild west and the civil war and a a social experiment and a sandbox and an mmorpg and a rpg and and a fps all in one. What keeps me enthralled with the whole idea of this game isn't even the gameplay, it's the people behind it and the notion that the turd who pods me and laffs is just as likely to be somebody I become good pals with after I dry my tears as he is to become my mortal enemy. The troll who talks exclusively memespeak may just as easily be a lawyer with a wife and 4 kids, and the acerbic, feminist-leaning activist may be a basement dwelling neckbeard with special needs. I've never seen an online game or environment with the level of intelligence or complexity or variety of this one, and I'm not talking about gameplay, I'm talking about the players themselves. The way I see it is, I've (hopefully) set myself up to win no matter if/when/why I ever decide to stop playing so long as I don't forget why I loved it when I signed up. I spent my few first trial days logging, standing in CQs, staring into space like a catatonic, being completely overwhelmed, and logging off. I play on a Mac and none of my keys work for the game. I missed earning the extra isk for completing a mission within 2 hours because I couldn't find the asteroid belt. My skill queue probably makes zero sense whatsoever. I've spent days reading up on strategy and it all looks like this to me: "Fit your jsodef with a giejpr and two F235 fjeies and warp to Maowojdje. From there, invest in some tzrqt lasers and gate to Obidijw and join a HNWQ with a view to swkwhing your stpqxe jjeurwowk sogorkejwhwjusi. Simples". And I love this game already. What is wrong with me? i'm a female too, and I thought about hiding it but eff that, and if I ever alt-up they'll be female as well. Now if I could just find the skill book the NPC agent swears is in my P&P folder. Even the agents lie! You're also going to have to get that phlogiston transmogrification skill trained to at least level 8. There's no other way you'll be able to gark the bip.
Seriously, it is a bit overwhelming at first. I did all the tutorials and part of the Bloodstained Stars epic arc before joining a corp. That's the key. EVE as a solo enterprise isn't sustainable for long. Joining up with other like-minded folks is what really makes the game work. There are a lot of new player friendly corps out there. The one I joined, Ideal Machine, is a relatively small outfit that offers a lot of variety and is very helpful to the new player. We do mining, PvE, PvP, manufacturing and invention among other things. Lots of help available to the new member.
PvP training for example. We do exercises that train the new player in the strategy and tactics of fleet operations. First time out on one of those, I gained knowledge that would have come at a very high cost otherwise. The learning never stops. By my lights, that's great fun.
There's still plenty of room for solo action, but running with a corpmate or two really enhances the experience - and your survivability.
Thing to remember about the EVE universe: danger lurks everywhere. And that's part of the attraction.
Good luck out there and fly safe. Take nothing for granted. "The object in life is not to be on the side of the majority, but to escape finding oneself in the ranks of the insane." -- Marcus Aurelius (AD 121-180)

EVE is really not that complicated. EVE jargon is incredibly complicated. I know sometimes it's difficult to realize just how much you spend on incidental things each month or year, but seriously, EVE is very cheap entertainment compared to most things... If you are a smoker, smoke one less pack a week and pay for EVE, with money left over to pick up a cheap bundle of flowers for the EVE widow upstairs. |

And yes, it's a bit odd that you can drag skills into the skill queue, but not out of it.

Welcome to Eve!
As a mac user you may find this really helpful to get the most from your eve experience: http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/
As for why some people truly quit after years of playing, beyond the typical "I QUIT! rawr!!!" breaks due to momentary frustration, Eve has some history, events, you might say things have happened. Player/customer trusts/expectations overwhelmingly breached. Giving some people reasons to finally realize they weren't enjoying themselves. That some things just weren't cool, & that the damage of those events, (events they as players had zero control over) were enough to give them reason to truly quit and never come back.
Yet if you can accept that sometimes these things happen, you'll be fine (or you'll completely quit 3 years from now when some genuinely unfair event happens to you as a customer / subscriber / client). |
