Okay, forgive me if I'm wrong but a little question I'm kinda confused on.
There are numerous modules that increase the shields resistance to EM, though everyone I have found adds a percentage. If the initial EM resistance of all shields is 0 then none of these modules actually do anything.
I assuming there are modules that add resistance, not a percentage of, I'm just yet to find one, checked out the TTI site and can't seem to find any there either, maybe I'm looking in the wrong place.
Someone clear this up for me please.
Vas.

They add resitances, obviously
So with one 70% you obly suffer 0.3 times the usual damage of em on your shields.
Now, if you equip 2 70% you don't get a resistance of 140%, but one of 91%. This is best explained in an example.
100 damage - from this the first hardener substracts 70, rest is 30. From this 30 the next hardener removed another 70%, which would be 21. So you suffer only 9 of the original 100 damage.
Same thing happens with the orginal shield resitances and and hardener. shield resitance of a 70% kinetic hardener and the shields 40% kinetic resitance would be 82%.

I think you missed my point...
Sheilds have an initial resistence to EM of 0.
What ever percentage you get, any percentage of 0 is still 0.

no
when it says it adds 70% resistance it in fact reduce the vulnerability of your shields
at 0% resistance you have 100% vulnerability
1 x 0.7 = 0.7 1 - 0.7 = 3 = 30% vulnerability left (70% resistance)
if you use another one :
0.3 x 0.7 = 0.21 0.3 - 0.21 = 0.09 = 9% vulnerability left (91% resistance)

Exactly. As said, it ADDS resistance, it doesn't multiplies or modifies it.

No, it multiplies, but not by your RESISTANCE. It multiplies by your VULNERABILITY.
That is, at 0% EMP resistance, you have 100% vulnerability. A 70% EMP shield takes your vulnerability to 30% of what it was. That is, your 100% vulnerability goes to 30% vuln = 70% resist.
Chuck on another one, and that takes your 30% vulnerability down to 9% = 91% resistance.
Obviously, your resistance will tend asymptotically towards 100% as n (number of hardeners) tends towards infinity. That is, you can never get 100% resistance, and you get a huge diminishing returns effect from throwing on more hardeners after 2 or so.

I have seen several types of shield hardeners now. What damage types are there around (caused by which weapon) and what is the appropriate shield hardener for it?
So far I have encountered EM, Kinetic, Photon. What else does exist?

@Darkwolf: Can be seen both ways
@Kalyessa: I suggest you take now and then a look at your ship specs. The 4th dmage type is explosive.

EM, kinetic, thermal and Explosive
there is no such type as "photon", which is actually a label for EM related weapons/modules

Regarding what you need to defend against what:
Lasers operate entirely on EM and Themal. EM hardeners will protect you nicely against radio lasers, while thermal hardeners protection you well against multifrequency. Hybrids operate equall on thermal and kinetic damage, so using a themal and kinetic hardener will guard against hybrids nicely. Projectiles do a mix of all four types, depending on the specific ammo loaded. Chances are you won't need to really defend yourself against projectile damage. But if you do, it is a good idea to have all four types of hardeners.

You need an em hardener against multifreq as well, roughly 40% of the basic multifreq damage is em.

All said and done.. pray tell what is the shield config for 100%+ for all resistances?

There is none.

not possible. why would they make it possible to reach 100% resistances across the board? What fun is it to be invulnerable?

The closest you could resonably expect to come would be 2 40% all or maybe one 40% all and an EM 70% and themeral 70% but of course you wont have cap left to do anything but sit there and be tough as a rock for the 4 seconds until your cap is all gone ;)

try 2 70% hardeners of each kind on a scorpion :P
or maybe 8 multispectral shields
I didn't calculate which takes less

Well.. with 8 multispec we would have these resitances
98.32% em; 98.66 ther; 98.99 kin; 99.33 exp
Oh, and 160 energy usage per second, draining the Scorpions cap in approximatly 30 secs.
