Please tell me You're talking about the games... At least it has the submarines in space -aspect going for it. I especially like the: "Everyone don't make a noise, so that far away spaceship doesn't hear us talking and drop depth charges in our crater." - scene. Every EVE player should feel right at home. |

I'm not entirely sure how to handle this. On one side Robocop is a damned good movie, but on the other hand Independence day is awful. Me and my dad had to crawl out of the living room out of embarrassment during the independence speech. But what the hell, I give your post a like anyway :-)

Thread will probably be moved, but anyway... Fifth Element was pretty awesome. I would say it's my favorite. I also love Super 8. The way J.J. Abrams caught the feeling of youth in that movie was pretty cool, almost as good as the way Stephen King makes you remember how being a kid was in his books. *removed inappropriate signature* - CCP Eterne |

For me...
Timeless classic - The Time Machine (1960)
All time (as sci-fi) - Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, Dr. Who and the Daleks and Capricorn One
All time (most fun) - The Fifth Element, Ghostbusters and Evolution
Recent - Looper
Worst or most disappointing - Prometheus, Green Lantern, Contact, Killer Klowns from Outer Space,
Honourable mention - End of Evangelion (not many directors/writers willing to say '**** you!' to the audience for not liking their original ending... except maybe Lucas) I'm Naomi Hale and this is my favourite thread on the forums. |

Dune blows, dont know why ppl always bang on about it :P
not including ones that have already been mentioned....
TRON original (surprised no one mentioned it) Ghost in the Shell - all films and series Dark City
several more that i annoyingly cant bring to mind right now :( but if we could expand this to books then the sprawl series is imo the best sci-fi ever written (books or screenplay). Snowcrash is quite good although talks about computer stuff as if speaking to children which is annoying. |

Dune is indeed a terrible movie. I enjoyed the book a lot though.
I'd say the best sci-fi movie is Alien. Which is weird. Because its basically just a haunted house chase/slasher kind of affair. But the sets and atmosphere are amazing. The characters and actors were great. The alien itself was a good design as well of course. The only thing that brings the movie down are two shots where the alien is obviously a dude in a suit.
There are a lot of other great sci-fi movies listed in here though. Road Warrior, 5th Element, 12 Monkeys, Total Recall, The Thing, Predator, Blade Runner, Demolition Man, Terminator...
Guilty pleasure: Cyborg. With Van Damme. Also Time Cop. Also with Van Damme. |

I think I was 6 or 7 when Dune came out. We only had 3 TV channels that were filled with crap like Cheers and Mash. Dune rocked to my 7 year old self. Here in my 30's I can't really get into it.

1st Dune
Last and because it was really awesome funny etc 5th Element The latest internet mini film Blood&Chrome was a very good pilot for a new series of maybe 2 or 3 volumes but killed at birth.
In between, lots of films and series. Some are rather good (3rd to 6th SG1 Seasons were amazing) others rather bad and a bit cartoon with their friendly aliens from 70's that will never have the impact of Mr Spok
Actually the SFI film since 80/90's is quite rich in volume but not necessarly in quality except some jewels, can't name them all.

Dune the film was something to watch if you already read the book and were immersed already in the full story and the personages, if you looked at the film without reading the book you might as well no really like it indeed.
Would like to see a new version of Mechanical Orange reviewed by some of the great, Malozzi and Besson, this would be really promising. *removed inappropriate ASCII art signature* - CCP Eterne |

Primer (pretty out there though, lots of technicality, but a damn good film, especially for an indie)
Aliens (Ellen Ripley is about as close as a fan can get to Samus Aran, until they do a good Metroid backstory and film.)
Moon (Had a toothache and was totally spaced out on pain meds, and this movie blew my mind.)
Pandorum (Good film, but easy to call if you pay attention to the "little" details.)
Book Of Eli (Denzel and bar fight, no slow motion required.)
Night Of The Living Dead, 1991 Remake. (Needed redone from the '68 version, and Savini did a phenomenal job.)
Pitch Black (Hell of a lot simpler than Chronicles was, but tasty nonetheless.)
Looking forward to:
Elysium (because District 9 rocked, and I love the way Blomkamp is intentionally taking elements from the Halo universe to essentially say F U for them not allowing him to develop Halo into a film...after those incredible shorts he did for the release of Halo 3.)
Ender's Game (because Harrison Ford is a pretty decent actor. Just sad he doesn't play in much anymore. And Sir Ben Kingsley cracks me up...pretty hard for me to take him seriously after all the crap he gives Chrissy in Sopranos.)
The Purge (because nothing says dystopian like having one night a year to commit any and as much crime as you see fit. Reminds me of this one game I like to play.)
Europa Report (Because from the trailer, you don't know wtf if going on...and I like that...a lot.)
Riddick (See Pitch Black, above.)
And Pacific Rim (Because it has Kaiju and giant robots. And who really wouldn't like Kaiju and giant robots? Lol)
Anyway, just my two cents.

Europa Report looks promising too.
But one thing - I started watching "The Man from Earth" after reading all the great things people are saying. I turned it off halfway through. Biggest pile of fifth-grade quasi-philosophical nonsense I've seen in a long time. |
