I've thought a lot about this... and really for me it comes down to "Predator" or "Predators"... both movies were great. Dune was pretty good though too... and "Bladerunner" of course and blah blah star wars return of the jedi... meh... what's the best sci fi movie I've never seen that's better? Throw me a line EvE!

I love Starship Troopers! I find it funny that the first movie is one of the best movies I've seen and the sequels are really bad. The second movie might be one for the worst I've ever seen and the third is just bad. |

In addition to aforementioned titles, I'd say Star Trek: The First Contact is a quite good sci-fi film, even if you are not a trekkie fan. Good action, some good humour, good actors.
My personal favourite is The Fifth Element, with Bruce Willis. That film seems ageless and is just plain fun to watch, imo. |

several more that i annoyingly cant bring to mind right now :( but if we could expand this to books then the sprawl series is imo the best sci-fi ever written (books or screenplay). Snowcrash is quite good although talks about computer stuff as if speaking to children which is annoying. |

Dune is indeed a terrible movie. I enjoyed the book a lot though.
I'd say the best sci-fi movie is Alien. Which is weird. Because its basically just a haunted house chase/slasher kind of affair. But the sets and atmosphere are amazing. The characters and actors were great. The alien itself was a good design as well of course. The only thing that brings the movie down are two shots where the alien is obviously a dude in a suit.
There are a lot of other great sci-fi movies listed in here though. Road Warrior, 5th Element, 12 Monkeys, Total Recall, The Thing, Predator, Blade Runner, Demolition Man, Terminator...
Guilty pleasure: Cyborg. With Van Damme. Also Time Cop. Also with Van Damme. |

Last and because it was really awesome funny etc 5th Element The latest internet mini film Blood&Chrome was a very good pilot for a new series of maybe 2 or 3 volumes but killed at birth.
In between, lots of films and series. Some are rather good (3rd to 6th SG1 Seasons were amazing) others rather bad and a bit cartoon with their friendly aliens from 70's that will never have the impact of Mr Spok
Actually the SFI film since 80/90's is quite rich in volume but not necessarly in quality except some jewels, can't name them all.

Primer (pretty out there though, lots of technicality, but a damn good film, especially for an indie)
Aliens (Ellen Ripley is about as close as a fan can get to Samus Aran, until they do a good Metroid backstory and film.)
Moon (Had a toothache and was totally spaced out on pain meds, and this movie blew my mind.)
Pandorum (Good film, but easy to call if you pay attention to the "little" details.)
Book Of Eli (Denzel and bar fight, no slow motion required.)
Night Of The Living Dead, 1991 Remake. (Needed redone from the '68 version, and Savini did a phenomenal job.)
Pitch Black (Hell of a lot simpler than Chronicles was, but tasty nonetheless.)
Looking forward to:
Elysium (because District 9 rocked, and I love the way Blomkamp is intentionally taking elements from the Halo universe to essentially say F U for them not allowing him to develop Halo into a film...after those incredible shorts he did for the release of Halo 3.)
Ender's Game (because Harrison Ford is a pretty decent actor. Just sad he doesn't play in much anymore. And Sir Ben Kingsley cracks me up...pretty hard for me to take him seriously after all the crap he gives Chrissy in Sopranos.)
The Purge (because nothing says dystopian like having one night a year to commit any and as much crime as you see fit. Reminds me of this one game I like to play.)
Europa Report (Because from the trailer, you don't know wtf if going on...and I like that...a lot.)
Riddick (See Pitch Black, above.)
And Pacific Rim (Because it has Kaiju and giant robots. And who really wouldn't like Kaiju and giant robots? Lol)
Anyway, just my two cents.

A short list:
Dark City - profoundly disturbing and thought-provoking. A hidden gem. Sereneity - fan service, but a thoroughly enjoyable confection. A Clockwork Orange - Mind-blowing when it first came out. I'd been a big fan of Brian Aldiss, but to see his vision brought to screen with Walter/Wendy Carlos' stunning and brilliant soundtrack. Perhaps the most unforgettable opening scene of any film I've seen. Watchmen - Very well done. With dialog that blows PC away. Alien - Ridley Scott outdid himself until we get to... Blade Runner - the very best of P. K. ****'s works brought to cinema. Director's cut recommended. Rutger Hauer's improvised line towards the end was one of the most moving I've heard.
I'm sure that I could come up with more, but that's the short list.
Books that should be made into movies:
Ringworld Any of Iain Banks' works based on the Culture series, but especially Against a Dark Background (RIP, Iain). Davis J Williams' The Mirrored Heavens, The Burning Skies and The Machinery of Light "The object in life is not to be on the side of the majority, but to escape finding oneself in the ranks of the insane." -- Marcus Aurelius (AD 121-180)

As far as less popular atmospheric Sci-Fi - I remember liking Solaris (2002), Melancholia (2011) for Kirsten Dunst, Another Earth (2011) but I'd agree with many of the popular choices in this topic for "best". |

just to be pedantic, as what else is an internet forum tied to an internet spaceship game for, the Sci-fi label is very wide ranging and one could argue than many so called sci-fi movies are really action adventure movies, or fantasy movies given the sci-fi title as they are set in a futuristic setting.
i would be more specific and go with movies that more acurately fit the sci-fi label:

Anyway, Inception is probably very close to the top of my list for the best science fiction films, at least of the last ten years or so. Different strokes. I liked Prometeus a lot. Inception not so much. Indeed. Inception was roughly an hour too long for the content. One of the few movies I'm gone to at the cinema (I've been to 9 in my entire life, people annoy me) that had me wishing it would just end.
I liked District 9 when I went to see it. I like bothe the old and new Total Recall. And things like Blade Runner etc. I don't consider Event Horizon to be proper Sci Fi, it's more a horror in a Sci Fi location.
As for TV series I like most things. I even liked SG:U and think it would have not been cancelled if it were released 10 years ago. These days no show can afford to spend an entire season introducing characters and background, because peoples brains are no longer wired to enjoy it. This is the time of instant gratification where, if a show doesn't wow people in the first half an hour, then that show tends not to be watched. Just my opinion, but I think the Internet has changed how we process information. We expect everything to be available to us as soon as we want it. |

To me, there's a huge difference between 'good' and 'entertaining'. While there's a lot of entertaining SF movies, most of them are high on special effects and low on actual story. And in all honesty, it's getting decidedly worse with the remakes of old classics.

I think I must have seen a few hundred sci-fi films, both English-language and foreign. English-language films seem to be pretty well covered, so I'll recommend some foreign language films that I thought were pretty good:
- STALKER (Russian classic)
- Los Cronocrimenes (aka Timecrimes, Spanish)
- Delicatessen (post-apocalyptic French comedy)
- Hell (German film, post-apocalyptic global warming)
- Sleep Dealer (Mexican film)
- Solyaris (1972 Russian film Solaris is a re-make of)
- Alphaville (1965 French film)
The only movies listed in this thread I haven't seen, and aren't yet to be released are:
The Ice Pirates The Tripods (technically, a TV series based on a book, not a movie) Future World The Time Machine (1960) Killer Klowns from Outer Space Green Lantern (superhero film) End of Evangelion (Japanese anime) Ghost in the Shell (Japanese anime) First Men in the Moon Akira (Japanese anime) Invaders from Mars When Worlds Collide Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea Darkside of the Moon Safety Not Guaranteed
Most of them either obscure, anime, or 5+ decades old. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTzA_xesrL8 |

+1 for The Objective. That's one seriously weird, but awesome movie. What Solaris should have been (more weird-ass aliens - less crappy melodrama).
Speaking of weird aliens - Season 3 of Torchwood, "Children of Earth" is very good.
Someone also really, really needs to make a one season TV-show based on Blindsight by Peter Watts. |

Wow. This thread proves that there are some just amazing SF movies out there.
It's obviously the most expensive, yet most important genre.
Although I really like what Harlan Ellison said in an interview 3 days ago:
"Well, we live in a technological age. Time has passed, and we have stepped over the ruins of our own societies, and our own civilisations, and we come now to the fruition of those things about which the human race has dreamed. We have flight and we have electronic assistants.
The entertainment media GÇô which are always very timorous and step very carefully out of fear and loathing GÇô don't know what they're doing so much. So they go back, and they are catching up on the kind of science fiction GÇô and they call it, in that ugly, ugly phrase, "sci-fi," which those who have worked in speculative fiction despise, it's like calling a woman a "broad" GÇô they are catching up on ideas that were covered with hoarfrost 60 years ago.
That's why you have an overabundance of zombies and walking dead, and world war and asteroids from space. They have not yet tackled any of the truly interesting discussions of humanity that are treated in speculative fiction. But they are a break from standard 19th, early 20th-century fiction, and so they seem fresh to an audience that is essentially ignorant."

Best candidate for a long-running TV series: David Wingrove's Chung Kuo series. It's in re-issue after Wingrove's problems with his original publisher.
The original 8 volume work has now expanded to 20! The original told a tremendous story. Intricately plotted, memorable characters, all-too-plausible premise, at times very disturbing. Those of you who know what I'm talking about would agree. Those who don't should seriously check it out. I would also point out that several of the cited stories aren't Sci-Fi... Star Wars is Space Opera. Several others are Science Fantasy (Dune for example).

Thanks for the correction. That said, I'm also an Aldiss fan. I read his Galaxies Like Grains of Sand when I was a youngster, and that work set my compass and standards for the sense of wonder and mind-blowing perspective that I demand from good sci-fi.
For me, that's the attraction of the EVE universe. It's an immense, evolving story in which we all have a hand. People who become bored wit hit simply haven't the imagination or the inclination to find satisfaction in participation. Most games hand you stuff: the story line (if there even is one), goals, endgame, etc. That's boring.
Also - agree with your assessment of THX1138. "The object in life is not to be on the side of the majority, but to escape finding oneself in the ranks of the insane." -- Marcus Aurelius (AD 121-180)

Not really sci-fi imho Future World (GREAT soundtrack. Not sci-fi. At all.) Ghostbusters ("Why worry?") Evolution (stoner movie... funny though... when you're high...) The Thing The Matrix Trilogy (cyberpunk) Logans Run (good movie... not sure if counts) Ghost in the Shell (cyberpunk) Soilent Green - (insert profanity string here) Idiocracy (reality show) Johnny Mnemonic (cyberpunk - Let's hope Neuromancer is better. You are starting to get into the subgenres but what would define a movie as being a Sci-fi related movie? (yes that's a can of worms to open :) )
Post apoc is a standard theme in Sci Fi related material. 12 Monkeys would fit in the realm of Sci fi in relation to time travel.
Best way to look at it is basically, does it feel like a sci fi reality or ideal, then class it as sci fi. |

The only movies listed in this thread I haven't seen, and aren't those yet to be released are: The Ice Pirates The Tripods (technically, a TV series based on a book, not a movie) The Time Machine (1960) Killer Klowns from Outer Space Green Lantern (superhero film) End of Evangelion (Japanese anime) Ghost in the Shell (Japanese anime) First Men in the Moon Akira (Japanese anime) Invaders from Mars When Worlds Collide Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea Darkside of the Moon Safety Not Guaranteed
Ice Puirates is awesome but probably not the samw way as some of these others. It's dated and full of cheeze. Yummy cheeze. and ice theft!
And if you love that one, check out Galaxy Of Terror. It's hard to beat a Hammer film. :)
Thanks OP. Love this thread. Now I know who my fellow old people are. LOL |

Im going to add a couple -a lot mentioned ive watched except the Anime/Manga/Foreign mentions which is a shock to me - and a couple of them ive seen even. Have a few nicely on the list to investigate too so thanks.
2 more ill never turn over from but always turn over to.
Logans Run. Close Encounters.
To the guy mentioning Skyline - i kind of agree, and again one of the few that would, but with MASSIVE proviso. When you get the tipped hat to the 'Rapture' for the main characters scene - TURN IT OFF, never watch further because it is a lesson in how to kill a movie stone dead in 3 minutes.
Im going to add Contact.
There i did it. Fly away little Starling. "caught on fire a little bit, just a little." "Delinquents, check, weirdos, check, hippies, check, pillheads, check, freaks, check, potheads, check .....gangsn++ all here!" |

forgot logans run, classic.
just watched john carter, surprised a little, had a bit of a star wars feel to it. not bad at all.
but after reading through all the posts.
blade runner, 2001 and 2010 and forbidden planet are right there at the top for me.
but, blade runner is and always will be the best scifi movie ever to date, it's timeless, the music is out of this world. the acting is amazing, all around great scifi.

This thread is great! A treasure trove of good movies I've never seen! Cool!
One thing, however - starship troopers...I almost cried when I saw that...not from any emotions the film caused, but from the obscene evidence of crimes committed by the film writers. They butchered one of the best books (insert kanye west voice) of all time. In my dream world Joss Whedon would make a "real" Starship Troopers movie that would do the book proper justice right before he made the sequel to Serenity (hey, a guy can dream :D )
I'm listening to-áBj+¦rk, playing EVE, eating fishsticks, and I'm cold....this is immersion gaming. |

Never forgive. The preacher? Yah I would have liked to know more about his past. I liked Jayne Cobb... except for that time he tried to turn over River to the alliance. That was not so cool.
Looking forward to Prometheus 2.

Wash, although the preacher had much more story in him too.

Must be a lot of Germans piping in for Cargo to have been mentioned so many times.
I watched it a year or so myself - really enjoyed it. I studied German for two years and like to watch German films regardless, but I find the dearth of German language sci-fi disappointing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTzA_xesrL8 |

jason hill mentioned Iron Sky - I can only recommend it for a completely ridiculous take on '****'s on the moon'. Your mileage may vary though.
One movie i did not see mentioned yet is One Point O - A little gem my GF introduced me to. It's pretty damn good and keeps you guessing all the way through. It also has Lance Henriksen in it so tbh it's a must see :>
Also, thanks to everyone who posted in this thread. It seems i've missed out on a lot of movies... Time to catch up :)

I awaited Prometheus with pretty high expectations. Even joined a dedicated Prometheus discussion forum a few months before it was released. People there would theorize, speculate on bits of footage from the trailers, post fake scripts, etc.
I can't recall ever being hyped for a movie as Prometheus, as two of my favorites of all-time were Ridley Scott's Alien and Blade Runner. That being said, when I finally saw it, I thought it was mediocre. It was an OK film, but not great. I hope the planned sequel addresses many of the things that I thought Prometheus failed to. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTzA_xesrL8 |

I enjoyed several of the already mentioned, and Dune mostly because it forced me to read the books (and I was amazed) ...
Blade Runner for the whole contained package within it, this scene never tires, and every once in a while I try to remember it as I blow up a LCO in a mission ... Imagining how C-Beams look and the Tannhauser Gate ... such a powerful scene, it still echoes within me.
On other notes
I enjoyed
-Logan-¦s Run -The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai across the 8th Dimension -Time Bandits -Enemy Mine -Krull, since its a mix of fantasy and sci-fi -Hangar 18 , the idea was novel to me and the ending made it -Flight of the Navigator, fun times -DARYL -Flash Gordon before it was cool due to the TED -Saturn 3 (I still enjoy it today, mostly for the theme) -Zardoz , my top one, no other movie ever has said "THE ***** IS EVIL" ever again ... -Original Andromeda Strain , remake was ok -All original planet of the Apes -Original SOLARIS -The Omega Man (a classic) -Fantastic Planet (I have linked it before, people need to see this animated french film) -Demon Seed (first time ever I saw an evil Computer implant a woman with his own "seed" to produce a baby) -Wizards (Bakshi animated film, a cult classic ) -The Black Hole :)= -And so many many I can remember as I see my sci fi movie directory in the d: drive
I mean it-¦s alongside Horror, my fav genre, and I do enjoy the classics over newer versions that just shower you in CGI and pretty faces.
