It's probably been suggested before and if so, my apologies.
How about it CCP? Now granted, it will not be EVE as it is as a MMORPG, BUT what it could be is a simplified console version comprised of viceral space ship combat. Not as simplisitic as say MECHWARRIOR is, allowing module slot custimization would be intregal to success, however; No mining, no cans, and no skill times. Something people can enjoy in quick stints.
You pick a ship, you pick your mods, and you pick a side. Everything from battleships to inty's. Just full on fleet skirmish combat. Consol controls obviously, multiple veiws, and lots of shredded metal. You could ofer new ships and levels like they do now on live so the game's ship/module selection could keep pace with the main game.
Now before the flames begin, I am not advocating this for real EVE. Ohhhh no. I like eve as is, but sometimes it would be nice just to be able to say "fudge it" and get into my best ship to sacrifice it to a roaring fleet battle with no consequence beyond a position on a leader board. Something we can enjoy at our leasure and relax.
The single player campain is already done if you simply use missions with some tweeking. Some don't even need tweeking like the multipart story mishes. (angel strike anyone) And beating the single player game unlocks different ships depending on which setting you did it on, so when you see someone ripping around on live in a nightmare or imperial you know you've a fight on you hands.
Just came to mind, please be gentle, I cry easily.

I'm sure all the dedicated players of Eve would love the Dev team to stop working on Eve for the next year to work on a crappy console port.

No, I'm sure they would hire people to toil away and engage in yet another money making venture. It's not as if there's no money to be made in the console market, and more money for CCP means better quality of it's games, infrastructure, services, and booze for the devs to make them more pliable to our pet requests for this or that in the game .
Besides, do you honestly belive CCP expects EVE to last forever? I know we all would like it to, and this idea is in no way meant as a replacement for EVE, that'll be EVE2. (here's praying for char transfers) But do your really belive that they are not already hard at work on thier next idea(s)? PC leet snobbery aside, growning eve through other methods, like the CCG for example, only draws more people to the game by letting them know eve is here. More poeple aware and playing eve is better for us all, another EVE type game would greatly increase visability and be y'know fun to play in it's own right. Somehow that's bad?

Oh, yes a console port that would be.... well.... totaly worthless.
When ported all people get is a lame point and click shoot'em up game. That would however make sure none of the people dumb enough to buy the console version would ever try out the real game. (less noobs in empire space )
Anyway how about NO!
Making a console port can never come close to the real thing as a console just isn't able to give you what EVE gives you (continuous updates, new content, in game chat, in game politics and a virtual economie on a scale never seen before in any game. ------------------------------------------- Should you disagree with me, well I guess that is because I disagree with you. If you have a problem with that please feel free not to tell me. |

Gah! Necro and I have begun to think as one entity. This goes for me too...
However, if it ment that dev time would be taken away from EVE then I'd say no *&&$#%& way.

I think the devs have their hands full already without designing another game. I read somewhere that if CCP was to create a new game, they would hire an entirely new staff for it instead of using who they already have. ----------

Somehow i dont think it would be easy to navigate with a console, moving the cursor around with a joystick. Goodluck getting your pod out after your ship explodes.

I think floppies point was CCP could just franchise out the eve name to another software house. If CCP retained directorial control of the project it shouldn't hurt the barnding too much.
I would be very suprised if no one at ccp towers had thought of this before. ---

Hmm just been down this road in swg porting to a console is dumb they have to make the game real simple to play on consoles. dont believe me buy star wars galaxies a galaxy emtied 2 years of customer loyalty ****ed down the drain for a console port if it now fails on the console then its over the current changes have probably cost half the remaining playerbase or more.

It would never work. There is too much small text in Eve Online. You'd have so many kids right up to the TV trying to read everything. Nice thought but there's no way it would work. Much simpler for them to focus thier finances on the free expansions and bugfixes.

Consoles should never, ever, have an RTS, FPS, or MMORPG on them.
Consoles are for adventure games, platformers, classic RPGs, fighting games, and racing games. And anything else that works with a joystick. - Proud member of the [23].

well let's not be too hasty, I agree that MMORPG's just aren't ideally suited to consoles, and RTS's just don't feel right without a mouse and keyboard.
but FPS games are tollerable and even quite good on consoles. Halo/Halo 2 are great examples, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, and plenty of others are all fine games.

I had the admittedly unworkable idea recently of letting fighter-pilots launched by carriers be console players.
All the console kids would sit in a lobby chatting, in a kind of queue, and whenever someone on their chosen side clicks to launch his fighters the consoler is sucked into the game and spat out into space where he must use his l33t joypad sk1llz to shoot red and protect blue!
And maybe follow commands if they feel like it. -omg-

I'm no expert on the x-box OS, however I'm pretty sure its direct X compatible. Wouldnt take much to port it. But as others have said i'm sure ccp have better things to do and its highly unlikely to happen.

Phantasy Star Online was a console MMORPG, which had a pretty darn large following on the Dreamcast. It's not that it can't be done, or can't be done well. It's just so much work to do it that very few have even bothered.
The biggest reason to date is the lack of updatability. Only recently have consoles come out with hard drives to support this, so it's probably a very feasible thing right now considering the PS3 and YBox will come with them.

umm folks re-read the OP. The concept wasn't an eve port to console. The concept was a FPS, fly-em-up based in the eve universe. ---

On a related but tangent version of the topic, a RTS game based on the EVE ships and universe would be pretty groovy. Use a Homeworld-like control interface with a campaign for each of the five races and it may well be very flyable.

NO, Eve, YOU MUST NOT GO TO THE DARK SIDE!!
Besides, do you actually think you could fit a game this big on a CD/DVD? Maybe the basics, but not everything that gets added constantly.
What made EQ2 go to the sh!tt3r is that they wanted to appeal to the console gamers instead of their roxxor PC fan base.
Consoles/X-Box Live are for Soul Calibur and Halo junkies, not the sophistication that is Eve. ************************************************ SobaKai.com... The new Eve-I... or at least it will be once we finish it!! |

You would be suprised. The number of preorders for Oblivion XBox alone should tell you just how much consoles have changed in the past few years. Then there is FF11, hta console MMO with, what, ten times the player base of Eve?
Eve only takes up about 1.3 GB unpacked, so it should easily fit on a standard DVD with room to spare.
Controls are easily handled via the mouse and keyboard peripherals for the XBox 2, and the hardware is more than capable of taking anythign the Eve engine can throw at it.
The problems are going to be the PowerPC base CPU, and the Live! connectivity. Recoding for a new architecture can be a reall challenge, and I don't know how well Live would permit connecting to a non-MS central server.
Still, it may be worth looking into releasing Eve as an XBox 360 MMO.

IMHO, consoles and PCs for gaming are like geniuses and madmen, they are separated by a thin line apart. ----------------
