Anyone played X3 Reunion yet? I been playing for a few days now. I think some of the graphics in Eve and the way the spatial objects are presented are better than X3. However, the time/space continum in X3 seems so much more realistic.
Anyone have any comments of comparisons between these two games?

Regarding X3, the community on the Egosoft forums were generally very unimpressed by the bugs found in the shipped version of the game. There was a 1.2 patch available right after that corrected many, but not all of them, and at the moment I'm waiting on 1.3 before playing it again. I encountered one annoying bug which prevented me from continuing with the storyline, and now at what I assume to be the last plot mission, I've got another bug that prevents me from playing it beyond the mission.
Excepting for the bugs, I think the sound and GFX are absolutely breathtaking. It's been a few years since I was last as impressed. The ambience is also very immersive and I've enjoyed the plot and making a financial empire of my own. The combat model is much better than X2, and dog fighting is a lot of fun, although I have found that in most scenarios, I'll either win quite easily, or lose quite quickly, with no getting through just in the nick of time. I find it bizarre that gamma class weapons (except for the PPC) were removed from the game. The new ships look cool though I preferred the old nova's design.
To compare it to Eve...well while I think X3 looks and sounds better, it's missing one thing that also happens to be the same thing that seperates Eve from other MMOGs...the community. Eve is an online game and has a generally quite mature community of players. The SCC market...market griefers and regional barriers aside is better than that of any other online game I've tried, creating a real dynamic market. Add to that the RPG aspects and skill system, I think Eve is in an MMOG class of it's own, despite any grumbles I have about it's gameplay or balance problems.
X3 is a brilliant single-player game in a brilliant, expansive sandbox universe. Eve is a strategic multiplayer game in an even bigger universe. Why not enjoy both? :P -------------

I'm so dissapointed with X3. Admittedly, it looks fantastic *if* you can get it to run properly (and that's no mean feat - my 35oo+ with 2GB RAM and 7800GT won't even run it anything approaching smoothly, it jerks and stutters like a pig). In its present state it's barely a beta, I can't believe they released it with so many problems.
Oh, and it features some of the worst voice acting you'll ever encounter (and the lip sync is utter comedy!).
I've put it back in it's box. I'll wait for a few more patches before I bother with it again.

Edited by: keepiru on 19/11/2005 18:14:51 Wierd, runs just fine here, high/high aa/af. I hear its a question fo drivers with NV cards. FX-53/X850XT/1GB here.
I love it, btw. Its buggy and beta, just like X2 was at this point of time. It still rocks. ------------- Where are the named 800mm Plates and Mega Ions, CCP?

I really, really hated the retarded weapons and a complete lack of balance in X2. X3 isnt even worth downloading tbh, unless you're just looking for some eye candy. --------------- VIP member of the [23] Sadist - harsh to the idiots, kind to the smart Sig contest |

i bought X3 today, quite like it but it's not the smoothest game to play. the fps drops with too much going on, especially with planets in view. The graphics are amazing tho, guess i just need to upgrade my XP 3200+ :-( _____________________________________ The zenith of hypocrisy. |

I hear Patch 1.3 is coming out at the end of November which will address stability and performance issues.
I've been playing X3 for a week now, I like it alot because it's a step in a different direction compared to Eve-online. What's funny to me in X3 is I've not seen a single Jump Gate pirate camping out yet, lol. The economy is interesting. I was actually beaten a few times on a trading delivery mission... I just undocked and was almost to my destination point when I found out that an NPC beat me to deliver the Energy Cells, hehe.
I'm not overly impressed with the graphics of stations, factories, and plants yet...maybe it's because I have to play the game on lower settings due to the high PC system demands. I for sure can't afford to upgrade my PC over this game though.. I have a high end system now as it is.

Played XBTF. Loved it but didn't finish it. Too much tedium.
I tried X2 when it was first released. Hated it. Too much computing overhead, drags my graphics card to the dust, and tedious.
Was planning to try X3 but I don't have a copy yet. I heard of the machine requirements and i was daunted. Don't want to spend too much cash buying powerful CPUs, motherboards, new memory, new graphics cards, just to play a game. Decided to let them work out the bugs first and save up on the cash.
Took out my old X2 again. I notice they got new patches that clean up the game's memory leak, optimized performance, added new content, improved the reliability and the AI quality.
Wow. The old rough stone is now as polished as a diamond. The game is virtually uncrashable. My PC has been upgraded since then and performance is smooth. I am quite impressed with the quality and the detail of attention that went to the game. Graphically, X2 is even equal to better than EVE, which makes me wonder what X3 can do.
Got a few issues though, mainly in the artistic design. EVE is pretty slick. The artwork in EVE is superb and the best I've seen. Stations and ships in X2 look either toylike and industrial, and too Terran looking for the weird aliens (while EVE ships are too alien for humans). The aliens seem more like caricatures and coming out from the TV show Tripping the Rift. The names like Argon, Xenon, Paranid, Boron seem unimaginative.
Other than that, and the clunky menus, I like X2 v1.4 now and the way you can build stations, have fleets of transports running around, building up a battlefleet of youw own, and watch the NPCs themselves do battle, like an Argon Colossus taking on a horde of Khaaks. The battles in X2 look more World War II like than in EVE, with tracers flying around, and fighters coming in and out of carriers.

I took out bitmapping out of my graphics settings as that feature did nothing to enhance my game feeling and it make the ships look dirty and wrinkled. That greatly improved my FPS in X2.
While you don't have person gankers in an encloned all NPC environment, you still don't let your guard down. That's because the NPCs are still more than willing to kill you, especially the Khaak. They will come in swarms even at the so called safe systems and gank every living thing they see. _______________________________________________ "Is it me or the bad guys just getting totally pathetic?"---Clover, Totally Spies, "Hope is wasted on the Hopeless."---Mandy, The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy. The problem with software these days is that marketing works years/months in advance so publishers need to set a gold date and stick to it. However, writing software and authoring content is becomming more and more complex, involving larger and larger teams. Small problems can become big time-sinks if they aren't managed properly, throwing the marketing plan off, which can potentially cost a lot of $$$. If the product isn't ready it isn't such a big deal either as you can patch afterwards thanks to the wonders of the internet.
There are problems with this model however:
(1) if you have a 56k modem, downloading a 90mb patch is non-trivial, (2) the user needs to know about patches (many don't and continue to play bugged games!)
However, overall I think the publish and patch model works quite well. I bought X3 some time ago but haven't played it yet. My X2 experience was to wait until the 3rd patch before the game became enjoyable. Same deal with X3 I'm sure.
Games I've bought recently but not bothered to play yet:
Quake IV (okay, got 1/2 way through) FarCry (went for a swim, sunbathed on the beach, stole a jeep) X3 (will pretend Shinra are the Boron and wtfpwn them when 1.3 comes out)

Should be pretty cheap by now though and if you get one of the original boxes, it'll look quite nice on the shelf even if you don't play it (original packaging was a very cool design).
