Deja is right, sadly...
But I too have all but char to lvl 5 simply cause at 25 million skillpoints my character had completely specialized in the area I wanted him for... (research and manufacturing)
The same is almost true for my second account as well... (Combat and Missions)
And my third account has 2 of the 5 adv learning skills to 5...

Sure you train a skill faster now. But if you had trained skill "x" instead of empathy V you would have had skill "x" ages ago (if that makes any sense).
Well that really depends on how long you plan on playing eve for, if I remember the figures correctly it takes about 3 years until it pays off if you train all the advanced learning to lvl5 like I did. Now since I trained the skills to max as soon as they came out I'm already about 1 year into that.
I fully expect to still be playing in 2 years time so on that basis it does make sense for me personally.

Advanced skills are only to lvl 3, with int/mem/per's adv skill to 4, all basic ones to lvl 5, cept charisma.
I'd have leveled them all to lvl 5, but I didn't want to have to wait several months to beable to fly something better than a caracal. Once my gunnery skills are up and im comfortable in my harpy, I'll probably get the others to lvl 4, maybe lvl 5. ------------------------------------

I am in the process of getting them now ( have 2/5 so far), basically to counteract the negative effects of having high charisma.

I'm looking to do one of the adv learning's to lvl 5 soon. My other account has 2 of them at 5 so far. It's a double-edged sword, on the one hand I feel I have to train some things to be more effective ASAP, but on the other hand I'm not doing things in the most profitable order. Oh well. ------- K. I have Preception and Willpower trained to level 5 for the advanced skills. These were my weak areas. I started the game a few days after it was at my local store back in 2003. I made a few attribute mistakes and ended up with an extra charisma point and a bit too much memory lol. So the Extra +2 in the weak area was welcome.

Advanced L5 is not worth it. I provided plenty of calculations showing when the breakeven points were, but some people are going to train them no matter what you say. Then they tend to get defensive when you question their choice...

perhaps, but it took me around 20 days to train perception and will(allready had int and mem trained), and as a resulte training time for barges to level5(wich was my goal at the time) dropped by about 20 days(doulbed skill means halved training time), so didnt make much a difference with that skill. But any skill I train that needs perception or will are going to be a lot faster then if I decided "makes no difference so not gonna train it" :p
and I have all basic to 5, and most advanced(cept charisma) to 4, will do charisma to 4 before I train charisma related skills 8) will probably train to 5 when there are new skills, at least I can train the 3d skill to 4 and cut down training time for other skill to 5(int first, mem will be faster, then will and perc. goes faster ;))

I trained all of mine to 5. But more importantly I trained the SOCT willpower, perception & charisma ones in a cycle. I used Eve Character Manager (ECM) to build the most time efficient queue for training. It saved me a lot of time over training the SOCT skills individually to completion.
I don't care about total SP, but I do love to see ECM tell me I'm getting 2145 SP/hour! Why do I not need to worry if this is a stupid ALT post? I have no alts.

I decided to do one, and one only to Advanced Level V. The rest I stopped at Level IV. The one I chose to take all the way is my weakest attribute, Intelligence. Since I classify this as a 'first tier' attribute I figured it would help balance things just a little.
I also invested in an implant that is +1 higher than all my others, again in Intelligence. Ie everything (skills/implants) is balanced, but I chose to give one key attribute that extra boost to help balance it with the others better. Not perfect but pretty good I feel.
So really I chose to invest a little time (skill) and ISK (implant) in one single area that will hopefully benefit me from here on in, without taking things to excessive levels.
I took my Beginner Learning skills up to Level IV quickly, then trained some useful skills that I needed, then worked on the Advanced Learning skills up to Level IV. Must admit I'm only now getting to doing Logic to Level V, but that's because I've focused on Starship Command skills in the main so it hasn't been needed, but I foresee a good while spent on Int/Mem skills coming up, so I've decided to finally complete my education with this single Level V advanced skill.
Mathematically right or wrong, I've enjoyed deciding on this strategy

now just to keep this pretty uninformative thread on the top...
your math skills are lacking mr, ofc you gain with them all lvl5... just takes like 7 years... and who will not be here in that time?
and yes I trained them, though sadly not immediately upon release... just almost :) to lvl5 all.
It is more of a question how good does your skilltree look when you are showing it off to your friends?

ps. If you smellt some sarcasm in the second paragraph then fine, cuz it was. But I think almost anyone who trained those skills knew what he was doing and did it on purpose, 20d + skilltraining is usually not an accident Therefore we dont need to see the maths upon completion of the skills. And arguments will never erase those sp¦s, at least I hope so, hehe...

Deja Thoris makes an excellent point about training actual useful skills instead of the learning skills, but there is another wrinkle to it: not all of the skills you want to have are on Tranquility yet.
If you train learning skills to level 5, you'll have access to new skills sooner. New skills will be released with Red Moon Rising and Kali, but if you don't know what the requirements are yet, this is one way to prepare yourself. (Another is to use common sense to get prerequisites, but this can backfire: how long were the Jump Drive folks waiting for actual jump drives - about 2 years, right?)

Maybe, but unless you REALLY have maxed out all of the important existing skills (cough), you are giving up a lot for that extra 5% speed on new skills.

I trained level 5 advanced perc on all my characters. Most of the skills I train are perc as primary.
To break even, I need to train
768,000 - 135,765 = 632,235 skillpoints in perc based skills.
Now, that extra point of perc on all characters is augmented by learning 5 on all characters, so it's effectively +1.1 perc. So every minute, that extra level of perc will net me 1.1 skillpoints I wouldn't have had previously.
Now, to train that many skillpoints will take
632,235 / 1.1 = 574,759 minutes = 9,579 hours = just under 400 days of training perc primary skills.
Will you be still playing Eve in 400 days? That's the question you have to ask yourself, when commiting to training any of the skills to level 5.
I did the math and then trained two of the advanced to level 5 on two characters and three of them on my other character. Barring any disaster (like honourable killsystem being added), I know I'll be playing Eve for many years to come, so I will see a benefit from this investment in time....

I didn't intend to get any of them to 5 at first, but as the new missile skills were being planned I decided to prepare. Part of the preparation was to get the perc/will adv skills to 5, to be able to train the new skills faster once they hit the server.

I have 4 accounts.
One of those main characters has them all to lvl V except Charisma.
The rest have them all to lvl IV. ------------------------------------------------ Current Hobby other than EVE |

I got to adv 4 on all of them but I'm looking at the "diminishing returns on investment" at this point. Plus it's really hard to contemplate another 2.5 months of Learnings. Maybe sometime.
Once you've used skills to raise all your stats +9, then 2.5 months to get them to +10...
ouch.

All but mem, cha, and will. I have a 28 Memory, but with the new (drone/fighter) skills, I guess I will max mem out also.

I feel that the time to get level 5 is when
1) You have pretty much all the skills you want
So you train all 11 learning to max, for when they come out with NEW skills, so you can get them fast fast fast.
I think the most effective is to get 4 (not cha) learning skills to adv level 4, learning to level 5, cha to basic level 4. I think that's where you get the most bang for your buck.
And I'm not too sure about taking learning to level 5. Not sure if it makes enough difference to justify a 4-5 day training time for %2 faster learning.

2% faster learning is earned back in 50 times the time it takes to train the skill from 4 to 5.
If it takes you 5 days to train it to lvl 5, you'll have your break even point after 250 days. Considering I trained it to 5 over a year ago, it's been well worth it :-)

Learning V, Adv Learning skills to IV...except Clarity, which is V.
I had a +5 perc implant at one time and it only took like 7-9 days to train that one. Figured I might as well for when I would inevidably lose the implant, haven't regretted it. Might train Eidtic Memory to V eventually, memory is my worst attribute and it may be of some advantage to get an extra, permanent, point in it.
