The person behind the Eris avatar is definitely female. The Eris eite destroyer was named such after a long internal discussion over the names of new ships coming with RMR. There is not a connection between the name of a forum moderator and the new ship.

Just interested.. why a "long" discussion? You guys obviously take great care in your naming system, it would be interesting to know what process you go through.

Here's the ultra-condensed version. Names have been omitted to protect the innocent. All communication takes place by e-mail.
Dev 1: We need names for Interdictors and Command Ships. Here are my suggestions. <list of suggestions follows> Dev 2: I don't like these two. That one seems a bit too Star Trek, this one sounds like a women's toilet product. Let's use <several other suggestions follow> Dev 3: No no, you forget that the naming scheme for this particular NPC corporation's ships are "18th Century Central European Polkas." We have to adhere, dammit! Adhere! Hammerhead: Let's name this one "boobies." Dev 2: Quiet, Hammer. Hammerhead: Boobies. Dev 3: Boobies does not adhere to any naming scheme or convention that I am aware of or familiar with. Dev 1: OK, so that one's a bit Star Trek. How about <slightly modified version of name, sounds even more like something out of Star Trek> Dev 4: I think <one name> and <another name> should be switched. <Other name> just sounds so much more ... interdictory. Dev 3: No no no, completely made-up names are for Gallente ships only. Hammerhead: Check out the boobies. TomB: I kill people like you in computer games. Dev 2: Hmm, how about <entirely new list of names> Dev 1: I like this one and that one. The other ones are a bit wussy. Dev 4: I agree. Hammerhead: Hey, wouldn't it be cool if one of these were named "boobies?"
This continues for five days, then:
Oveur: OK WE'RE GOING WITH THIS THIS AND THIS, NOW GET YOUR ASSES BACK TO WORK WE HAVE CODE FREEZE IN FIVE DAYS
And lo! a new batch of ships is christened.

Dev A sends around an e-mail asking for names for the new player usable <insert item/ship/module>.
Devs B through H respond with names roughly following current naming guidelines.
Devs I, J and occasionally K throw in humorous names that have little to do with the naming conventions.
Devs C, D and E go off on tangents, generally philosophical discussions regarding religion, politics and/or the local price of beer. These tangents start other discussions that are barely related to the topic at hand, until Oveur sends the "Get Back On Topic or No Beer!" e-mail.
Devs A-K then swap another 15-20 e-mails until a final set of names are agreed upon and Oveur gives his stamp of approval.
New names are added to the latest test build, then the corresponding information, patch notes or features page and deployed to Tranquility.
NPC items tend to follow the same process, although items named after NPCs or factions have an easier time with it because the system or name is already in place.

Pink ships named after moderators, devs discussing boobies on the official game forums, withholding beer is a valid tactic to get your employees back on track...

(boobies)
Boobies should be a reserved name for a ship that can only fire 1 type of torp (ie: jugs)
Also, Boobies are a type of bird, and so would fit in to the Caldari naming convention, and they use missiles....

Stick me on that mailing list. ______________________________________________

My god, why not just put all the potential names on a dartboard? Then you can choose while at the pub. Think efficiency.

FACTS:
- It's pink.
- It's blindly fast and kicks butt wherever it goes.
- It can lock down virtually anything all the way out to 80km.
- It has the same name as teh uber moderator that embodies all of the above.
Did all the devs intentionally do this? Prolly not. Did one or more clever devs intentionally do this? Well....that is a more than a bit probable imho.
Nyxus
PS- Please don't rename this ships Boobies. I think it could force Eris into a killing rage, and tbh we still need Hammer.
