And people wonder where the name for Amarrians came from... >>;
Sorry to say that but in my native language, the Greek, there is the word amara which means anus !!!! To be more specific this word is an ancient one, used for over five thousant years untill nowadays, to refer to this specific part of the human body and was used in the everyday speeking but today remains only in the medical terminology mostly. You can check it out yourself. I know that the English medical terminology consists of Greek words at arround 90% because it has borrowed words from the Latin medical terminology which in its part Latin has borroed many Greek words. Not to mention here that the Greek was the first civilization that ever developed Medical Science and all the other civilizations were influenced and were teached by (todays doctors are well aware of the father of medical Hippocratic and his oath), especialy the Latins and other European civilizations (Dont forget that the Roman Empire had captured also the Greek country and as far as it is well known in history ("History" comes from the Greek word "istoria"), the Romans science was based in the Greek one and their scientisr=t had stadied in Greek academies ("Academy" comes also from the Greek word "academia" which is same as university). As for example the word "Cardiology" is the medical term that refers for everything to do with the heart of humans and animals. The Greek word of heart is "cardia". When i first started to play EVE i had to choose the race of my character, i laughed when i saw the name of the Amarrians. Also here in greece, Greek players of EVE that have chosen a Minmatar character often make jokes towards players that have chosen an Amarrian character, regarding the greek meaning of the name of Amarrian's race. I wonder why the Devs arent aware of this word and its meaning in Greek language. As much as i know no greek player was or is offended (specially the Minmatar ones), so i guess this name existing in the game is not a big deal at all....
PS For the use of the word anus in case it might be masked as offensive and not proper to be used in the forums of the game, all i want to say is that i want to explain and describe the meaning of the word and NOT to offend anyone using inappropriate language.

I dont want to dissapoint anyone in this topic but here is my point of view : I have found many names of ships in this game that actually are based in Greek names, for exaple : Charon (caldarian freighter) comes from the Greek name "Charos" who was the god of Death Mastodon (minmatar indastrial) comes from the Greek word "mastodonton" which is the big mammal with tusk that looks like prehestoric elephant (elephant comes also from the Greek word elefantas) Bastard (caldarian elite indastrial) comes from the Greek word "bastardos", the meaning is the same in English language also. Thorax (caldarian cruiser) comes from the Greek word "thorax" or "thoracas" which means torso.Thorax was also the name of the breast plate armor in the ancient Greek armies. Scythe (minmatar cruiser) comes from the Greek word "scythe" which was a special sword used by the ancient Greek close combat troops. Prophesy (amarrian battlecruiser) comes from the Greek word "prophetia" which means omen. Cyclone (minmatar battlecruiser) comes from the Greek word "cyclonas" which the meaning is the same in English. Anathema (amarrian covert ops) comes from the Greek word "anathema" which means damn or cursed. Nemesis (galente covert ops) comes from the Greek name of "Nemesis" the Greek ancient godess of punish. Helios (galente covert ops) comes from the Greek word "helios" which is the sun. Oneiros (galente logistics) comes from the Greek word "oneiro" which measn dream. Also Oneiros was the ancient Greek god of the dreams the son of Morpheas Greek god of sleeping. Obelisc (galente freighter) comes from the Greek word of "obeliskos" which the meaning is the same in English. Heron (galente frigate) comes from the Greek word "Heron" which was the name of a centaur according to Greek Mythology was the teacher of Hercules. Armagedon and Appocalypse (amarian battleships) both come from the Greek words "Armagedonas and Apocalypsis" repsectively and their meanings are the same in English. Typhoon (minmatar battleship) comes from the Greek word "Typhonas" which means harricane Scorpion (caldary battleship) comes from the Greek word "scorpios" which the meaning is the same in English. Catalyst (galente destroyer) comes from the Greek word "catalytis" which the meaning is the same in English. Ares (galente interceptor) comes from the Greek word "Ares" which was the name of the ancient Greek gor of war. Stileto (minmatar interceptor) comes from the Greek word "stileto" which means dagger. Deimos (galente heavy asault ship) comes from the Greek word "Deimos" which the name of an ancinet Greek semi-god. Cerberus (caldary heavy asault ship) comes from the Greek word "Cerberos" which was the name of the mythologic doglike creature in ancent Greek mythology that was the pet of Greek god Adis, the gatekeeper of the the underworld. Eris comes from the Greek word "Eris" which was the name of the ancient Greek godess of discord. Also "eris" in Greek language means discord.
So now you all know who the real winner is....

The Eris
Yes, the new gallente interdictor must be named after the one and only Eris Discordia, local forum moderator and all around flyer of pink ships.
Congradulations Eris, you've officially won eve
Eris is the Greek godess of discord and mischief. She took that name from that source probably - the ship name might be based simply on that mythology, although a decision to actually use THAT name might have been influenced by her presence.
Just so you all know, Eris is a name that has existed for 2500-300 years :)
Actually it exists for 5000 years. I am a Greek and i am aware of this for sure....also read my other quote for were many of ships' names in EVE come from....

Is it me or you guys use names and terms from the Greek language and mythology in order to name most of the ships in the game? Is there any Greek among you? I am Greek and i have found many of the names very familiar to my native language!!!!! We Greek players of EVE are very proud of this and we thank you.

I really don't think that the similarities of ship names to Greek words is part of a concerted attempt at a Greek theme. It is just the fact that these names happen to have roots in Latin, as do so many other words found in many languages. The main reason is that they have, usually, appropriate or cool meanings in English. With so many ships and so many names it wouldn't be hard to draw any number of conclusions as to the origin of each name and its meaning.

I think what you are seeing is a commonality of language origin. If Chinese was the primary language of display in EVE as opposed to english and being that chinese, unlike english and many other languages, does not come from a greek/latin origin etc. You wouldn't see as much coincidental aspects.
Now as for the refrences to greek mythology or historical refrences, or whatever exact name refrences there are. Well yes those I concede were probably used intentionally. But much of what you refer to is just the origin of the actual english word.
I do not look at a truck that is large and powerful with tusk like front protrusions and say, wow I think that should be the Ford Mastodon, because Mastodon is derived from Mastodonia a greek word which was a prehistoric elephant.
I say wow it should be the Ford Mastodon because a Mastodon is an english word as well that means a prehistoric elephant and that's what it reminds me of.
Now if I said another truck should be called Zeus because he was a figure in greek mythology, you would have obvious point to say I'm using something because of it's greek meaning. But 90% of the refrences you made are simple coincidences of the creation of the language CCP chose (english) to portray it's intellectual property in.
To go beyond that we would have to assume all other languages equally. And the College of Advanced Sciences might have spanish people wondering why advanced sciences are taught in high school. Collegio meaning High school not college in spanish. And other such wonderful language similiarities.

Oh Eris my dear,, you truley are the QUEEN OF THE PINK STUFF
And your new ship looks good I want one of my own.
And Devs it's nice yall come on the boards and get goofy with the community.
Plan for next round of names: 1:Send HAMMER to get boobies 2:Order lots of beer 3:Make sure HAMMER is ok 4:Tape names on dart board 5:Get 1 blind fold, set of darts, and a brave set of boobies 6:Tell HAMMER to let go of the boobies, until after the name thing 7:Blind fold a dev and hand said dev dart, and a pint, pick name and break for boobies. 8:Repeat as necessary untill names are picked or you have passed out with boobies
For me... Group therapy is a 30 pack of BEER!! Then all of the voices are satisfied. |

Caldari ships tend to follow a naming convention that consists of birds and mythical creatures. So why not have a "Blue-Footed-Booby"?! It fits the guidelines!

Just interested.. why a "long" discussion? You guys obviously take great care in your naming system, it would be interesting to know what process you go through.
About naming systems, i wonder how they came up with "BrundAkur" /me wants devs respond
