I specifically did not ask this in the skills forum for a reason. I believe most of the people in skills forum are SP hoes who acquire skills for its own sake and do not represent the average player who just wants to blow stuff up.
So spit it out, how high did you all train your learning skills?
I trained mine to adv int 5, adv mem 4, the rest are all basic level 4 and they will stay that way for a long time.

On this char I have Mem, Int, Perc and Will all trained to level 4 advanced. Charisma has never gone past level 2 of the basic skill.
On a different char I have all the learning skills to level 4 advanced, including Charisma.
Debating doing the level 5s soonish.

I went to the spec lvl 4. The only deviation I made was to get into a Frig on all 3 accts and get mining to lvl 4 for LaserII's..the rest of the time went straight to the learning skills till they were done.
I did my research before I started....after 4 months I was in a coverter/Itty V/BS on my 3 accts respectively with plenty of related and playable skills. They train much faster when your learning is where it should be and I can blow up a lot of stuff..hehe.
*- "I trained mine to adv int 5, adv mem 4, the rest are all basic level 4 and they *- will stay that way for a long time."
Obviously it depends on what type of chr you are persuing but you will find over time, if you don't have the Attribute up where it needs to be, all those related skills will take much much longer to train. Yes, you can get into a battleship quickly if you don't waste time on learning skills..but I will beat you every time 1v1 as will most others because they will have more related skills and will have acquired them over a shorter period of time. "Spend a dime to make a dollar" It just makes sence.
Or do as you please.

I trained them all to level 4 to begin with. When advanced ones came out, I trained int and mem to 5 and their advanced versions to 4. Should probably work on perception and willpower, to be honest.

I have all basic memory skills to 5 and all advanced at lvl 4. If they were to release a third teir of learning skills requiring the 2nd teir to be at lvl 5, I would train these to lvl 5 as well. I figured the sooner I trained them, the more I'd benefit.

In modern universities, they have programmes and courses on learning technique which has been shown to markely increase student performance. They teach techniques like mnemonic devices, mind-maps, research technique etc. Still sound damn silly? :)

Had them at 'basic' lvl.4 for the longest time... eventually bit the bullet and got them to lvl.5 and advanced ones to l.3, with exception of the primary learning skill and charisma which are still at l.4 (being charisma is already pretty high as it is... will likely train it to match the others when i start pushing further the leadership skills)

I had decent fighting skills as starter so I red basic learning skills to lvl4 first but still I was able to have fun with agents. After I had basics lvl4 I red some more basic skills for AB etc, then after couple weeks I red advanced to lvl3 and after couple months I boosted em to lvl4...
That might not be the most SP efficient way but atleast I had fun from the beginning. In my opinion its way to hars that new players should invest their first month or two on skills that doestn really make game more interesting.

To ease the pain of training those two advanced skills to 5, I made sure I had the appropriate implant plugged in beforehand.

I trained all basic to 4 early among other skills, then held off advanced until I did priority gunnery/ship skills plus a couple lvl V engineer/electronics etc.
Then I took int/mem to adv lvl 3, then did a batch of int/mem based skills to 4/5. Then its perc/will to adv lvl 3, then batch of remainng lvl 5 gunnery and ship skills. Then charisma to adv lvl 3 and a batch of leadership skills. Then I'll go and take them all to adv lvl 4 and push into the last few high rank lvl 5's.
This method minimised training times while prioritising playing skills. No point wasting time training a learning skill all the way up if you don't train high rank skills that need it ...
Probably worth noting Im pretty much pure combat focus with high starting per/will. -----------------------------------------

I have just started with a bunch of friends in Aus. They are appalled that I have 1.6 million out of 2.2 million in Learn skills Mem/Int at Adv 4; Learn 5; Base Per/Wil at 5 - training Cha to 5 now. I will get the advanced skills to Level 4 asap in sequence.
They laugh at me for "wasting" all my time, but I by far have the highest SP total of all of us despite starting weeks later, in some cases I have as many non-learn skills as people who started with me, plus the 1.6 million in the Learn tree
I also have a solid mix of skills including zero-waste asteroid reprocessing (Refine 5/Refine Efficiency 3/5x low grade Ore skills at 2) and Gallente Industrial III. While they laugh I just smile as I look at the training times for other skills steadily dropping

Edited by: Mak''shar Karrde on 28/11/2005 12:49:38 When I first started I took all the basic learning skills (bar Charisma) to level 4. Then I started working on some more fun skills, getting myself into a Cruiser and learning some skills to complete missions and bring in some ISK... Eventually I took them all to basic level 5 and up to advanced level 4. Except for Charisma again, which (I think) remains at basic level 2 (!). I really need to work on that, I forsee myself running a lot of missions in the near future.
I think that learning skills are one of the worse things about EVE. If more learning skills were added at this point (after I'm finally happy with mine) then I'd be more than a little annoyed, and I love this game, I really do.

This is how I started my first (and only) character on this.
First I trained a few skills so I could fly a low-level frigate and do basic mining/courier missions. I then took all basic learning skills to either level 3 or 4. After this I started training other skills so I could fly a Caldari Cruiser (Moa) properly, though with very few weapon skills. I then hit the learning skills hard, with Mem/Int being trained to spec level 4, and Perc to spec level 3. This done, I've taken a break from the learning skills. With the Mem/Int to spec 4, you can train quite a lot of skills without loss, Engineering/Electronics/Industry/Science, so I've been doing that for about a month now. These are getting to an acceptable level by now (good shield tank etc.), so it'll not be long before I'll train the other learning skills to spec 4 (including charisma), and then start hitting the weapon/ship skills.
Doing it this way reduces the grind feeling of the 1+ month learning skill training since you do it in a couple of smaller chunks while still training some skills inbetween giving you a feeling of progress.
Cheers!

Basics to 5 all Advanced to 4
I started this char 2 months after my main and lost 2-3 weeks further while messing about with alts,I made myself do nothing but the learning skills from the beginning, This char will pass my main in SP in less than a month after 11 months play with my main on almost 14 months, on her best skills I average 1 mil SP every 26 days and there are many out there that learn MUCH faster in their given specialist area's
Worth the month and a half i spent learning them, and if you are here for the long run then I can do nothing but suggest you do them as well.
I can do fun stuff as well, Logistics, covert ops, large barge for when I must mine, BS Pilot, lame gunnery skills but 20 electronic skills and 2.6 mil sp and rising

Edited by: Pottsey on 29/11/2005 07:02:48 ôHow is that?ö A while back I maxed all the skills to level 5 I need. So I started learning the Adv Learning to level 5. By the time I maxed out Adv 5 new skills came out I needed to train like Advanced Leadership skills, T2 drones e.c.t
So I didnÆt lose anything by training to Adv5 and I can train new advanced skills faster then most people. At one point I was 5+ million skill points behind my corp mates. Now I am millions ahead of them.
If you have someone with Adv lvl 5 and they train 10+ new skills some of which are advanced skills them selfÆs like Squadron Command and you compare them to someone without Adv 5 then the person with Adv 5 will be over 1 week ahead in training. So its not 3 years to pay its self back once you take into account the advantages of training new skills and mastering new roles.
A great example is Gang assist. ItÆs a relatively new role with upcoming T2 ships and the current modules are still only months old. Few people had the leadership skills at level 5 and no one had the advanced leadership skills. So I had a big advantage while training all these new Charisma based skills. It took me 21 days to go from Squadron Command level 4 to level 5, I then did Armored Warfare Specialist, next I am working on Siege Warfare Specialist level 5 lastly I need to max out the last none adv Leadership skill.
Some people are approaching being in the game for 3 years as well. I can see lots of other people still being here in 3 years time.

All to 5, save the Charisma skills, and once I'm done training my shield skills, I'll be training that one too. Not sure if I'll take it all the way to Advanced lvl 5, as the only reason I'm training it is for the T2 Battlecruisers, though, I might.

When I was happy that I could kind fly a frigate (1Million SP) I decided now was the time and pushed all advanced skills to 4 (except for Charisma as that came no further than adv. lvl3.
Now though all are on 4 and I'm thinking about pushing them to 5 just because of it would finish them once and for all (and every time I think that about a skill CCP releases a patch with new skills in that group (like caldari BS and torps to lvl5, welcome missile patch ))

Train all the advanced ones to 4, 5 isn't worth it imo. Training attribute skills is how you "level" in Eve. Do you want to earn 7 million SP per year or 14 million? It only takes 6 weeks to train all 5 of them to advanced level 4, do it or make millions of SP less then your fellow players are making.

In some cases Advanced Lvl 5 is a waste, in others it is a benifit. Which are you?
E.G Guy with 3 perception, gets 12 perception for adv. lvl4 or 13 perception for adv.lvl5 Now the percentage diffrence is quite high. If training lots of perception skills then lvl5 is worth it.
E.G Guy with 14 perception gets to 23 with adv.lvl4, or 24 with adv.lvl5 Now the percentage diffrence is very low. Usually the payback will take a long time.
For all others, +5's for the win. More realistically, 0.0 players can afford to have one or two +4's for the skills that they are currently training up. ------------ Criminal EVE Guides Evil Genius 101 Guide |

Rodge - Level 5 Advanced Perception, Level 5 Willpower (2 hours left), all others Advanced Level 4 (even the charisma one) Gumpy - Level 5 Advanced Perception, Level 5 Intelligence, all others Advanced Level 4 (even the charisma one) My indy guy - Level 5 Advanced Perception, Level 5 Advanced Willpower, Level 5 Advanced Intelligence, all others Advanced Level 4 (even the charisma one)
Basically went for level 4 advanced in all of them when they came out (already had most of the basic learning skills to 5), and treated myself to level 5 in a couple every now and again.
They may never pay themselves off in training time. But if I'm still playing in 12 months then they will have paid for themselves.

Originally by: Dak Hakin I dunno... Learning, perception, and memory up to 4 I think... I think learning how to learn is just damn silly.
What are you, 12?
Bad learning skills is what dropped me out of college.
