hey guys. im after some opinions about the personal palm size type computers. anyone got one and has an opinion of it?
basically, im looking for the following options: word, excel, Decent calendar function, some bluetooth or cable connection available to link up to a duplicate unit for calender synchronization, file transfers etc.
needs adecent battery life, eg if its only gonna last an hour in between charges, then im not interested.
also needs a fairly decent memory size, for storing documents, pictures etc that i can then call up on site.
needs to be pretty robust too, as ill be taking it into factories/building sites when doing surveys job costings etc.
Any advice, or reviews on pda's you have would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers, Max

Cant really say mate, all i know is we have the XDA IIi's here at work, it is used with a program that allows us to communicate with drivers, send job details etc, and they are always having to be re-installed, always something going wrong with them i dont know if this is a universal PDA problem with installed program or if it is something to do with the programs but so far i see they suck LOL
could be wrong but ask for a test drive before you get one and try and get personal reviews on any shortlist you end up with

While I use a Palm Zire 72, I cannot recommend Palm One brand devices.
If you call for tech support you will get someone in a call center in India. These people have one answer and one answer only to all problems:
"The problem is caused by third-party software. You will have to do a hard reset."
Doing a hard reset erases all programs not in rom and ALL DATA.
I use Palm because I have for years and am very used to the Palm OS. If I had it to do over again I would buy a Windows CE device.
Palm One has no tech support.
Solo playing is a valid play style. Or at least CCP thinks the money they get is valid. |

i have a Treo 650. With documents to go it is a good standin, barring a full latop. as an added bonus, its my phone+mp3 player, has a good calander for keeping ontop of things. With a memory card you can also put your favorite EVE video's on and watch stuff geting blown up while you are waiting for the bus.

the above descibes just about any PDA on the market. Seriously most PDAs have these basic functions. (be on the lookout though as not ALL have bluetooth. Most of the newer ones have bluetooth and wifi (b standard usually for 11mbps))
What you spend your cash on will be what extras you can get included. For ú400 you can buy the HP Ipaq 4700 which has a full res 640x480 screen x65k colours. For a lot less you can buy a 2200 series (ú160-200) which has a 320x200 screen (I think) but will do all of the above and more. Also look at the Dell Axim range - they are generally cheaper - as long as you trust Dell of course, I personally dont.
There is one palm unit out there that can open a little area which is really cool. It extends the screen and allows you to extend spreadsheets etc. It also has a dynamic screen rotate function which is great for getting your spreadsheets into landscape mode, you can actually see a useful portion of the spreadhseet. (I thinks its the Z5 - but I could be totally off, just saw a colleague showing it off a few weeks back, price was ú250 odd).
I suggest looking at a site like pdaworld or pdareview for decent reviews though.

Had a couple over the years. Last one was for a specific task (Sony Clie) with the Car Sat Nav. kit. Got two for the cars. Other than that I wouldn't touch a PDA. Got a Sony X505 ultra thin portable that goes that little bit further for that little bit biggerness. Does me fine.
Interested in the likes of oqo. When they have G3 data services/Wifi built in too I would probably get one of those instead of the Sony. -- select * FROM posts (nolock) where clue > 0 -- 0 rows returned |

I'm a little late with this; but surely the HP iPaq hx4700 has everything you need? I own one, and can vouch for it's robustness, battery life, connectivity etc. But take my advice and hold off for a month or two until PDAs with Windows Mobile 2005 are available.
