Hi all,
my plan is to buy a Ferox in the next couple of weeks. To make sure I gonna have the right weapon skills in place I would like to ask you for your assistance. Which skills should I have trained to have an effective firepower?
I am training my navigation skills right now to make it faster and more agile. Other suggestions are also very welcome.
Your answers are much appreciated.
thx in advance,
HC

It wont be fast or agile, no matter how much you train. Shieldskills, thats what you want.
When it comes to weps, its a matter of taste. If you aim for raven later, might just as well start training those missileskills.

Would u recommend to buy the Ferox or would u suggest to train directly for the Raven. There is not so much diff between the skills for those 2 ships anyway. Would the Ferox be a waste of money in the long term? Which ship would u suggest?
Thanks,

Well lvl 3 missions goes like a twist in Ferox, Raven is more for lvl4 missions, and it should actually get a lot better after the RMR patch.
Shield skills is what you need since none of caldaris ships is able to fly faster than a station

Skillwise theres not much diffrence, no..... But the pricetag is a biiiit bigger for a raven.
Getting the ferox is an excellent choise, you get the hang of shieldtanking, getting your missile skills up to par, and its not so expensive to have blown to pieces when you get warpscrambled in Black Market Hub.
I was told......

Edited by: Harry Colorado on 05/12/2005 12:06:14 Thanks for your feedback... I think I will get myself a Ferox then and wait until I made some money. It will also give me the chance to bring my skills up to a deadly lvl.
One last question even if it may sound silly... whats the RMR patch and what does it do?

Yeah, you pretty much need a Ferox to get a Raven. By far the best BC, you can make good money on level 3's. Myself, I use missiles on them just because they are more versitile than turrets. Shield skills are good and so is having a high BC level for the resistances.

Hello Harry :)
I am having a Ferox as well( my second since I ever flown one) and I am very happy with it, in comaprison with a Brutix its so good..I am not going back!! I have trained the following skills for it to make it as effective as I show in the setup beneath
~Shield Operation 4 and Shield Upgrades 4 ( For almost every T2 shield items) ~Tactical Shield Manipulation 1 ( For hardners if you like) ~Afterburner and Navigation 4 ~Shield Compensation and Management 2 ( Higher is better :) ) ~Electronics 4 (The Pg on the ship is high enough, CPU is thight) ~Drones 5 ~Battlecruiser 2
It still leaves a lot of room for improvement but its already great:
My Ferox HISLOTS~~5 Arbalest Assault Missile Lauchers( Not super expensive) MIDSLOTS~~10 MN AB T2, 2x Large Shield Extender T2, MediumShieldBooster T2, Shield Recharger T2, LOWSLOTS~~4x PDS 1's
You can swap the T2 MediumBooster for a T2 LargeBooster or best named, the CL-5 by replacing a PDS ( maybe 2) for a Co Processor ( or 2) :)
I love it, it has super shields, around 9000 with great resistances and recharge rate, some backup, competent frigate crunching and a lot of future for improving this ship
Hope this helped a bit :)

A little bit depending on what you will use it for, the above setup could use some love imho.
First, shieldextenders are more or less a waste of slots. It's resistance we want, not huge shields. Hardeners, and a booster and youre fine.
Also, you want to hurt people, at least in lvl3 missions. Get heavy missiles asap. Assaults are fun to watch, but not much more. Use lows for BCU, and use hardeners and the ferox shield bonus to survive.
and again, the first time yuo do BMH, a warpcorestabilizer could be nice to bring along. I have heard...

I am going to give that another go too...my former Ferox is from 2 months ago when I didnt have the skills I had now and didnt really do great ( in my opinion)...but maybe now it does
The Angel version Spy Stash I did in the setup I did and I was pleased by the result, only the Domination Legionnaire class cruisers threatened my shield systems. I didnt agress them all ofcourse but it was very much doable without warping out or feeling very nerved, Stage 2 was about the same for me, I had to boost at some times. Also a "Seek and Destroy" mission with 5 Serpentis cruisers and 2 Veteran frigates firing at me simultaniously didnt dropped my shield before I reduced their numbers...

I see it in the opposite. A large booster is sucking your cap really fast, so you need a shield supply to gain more benefit from same cap and you need to run the booster often.
I fitted a large (the best named) extender and it feels far better (to me, of course). Extenders aren't a wasted slot, it all depends on your likes.
@OP:
Ferox isn't a waste of money and time, if you are a mission runner. I bet you will cancel your account if you plan to go for a Raven with level 2-missions. Very important skill for BC is the BC-skill (yeah... indeed ), because it gives 5% more shield resistance per level. You will really notice each single levelup...
Anyway: If you are a mission runner - be aware of the harder level3 ones (Silence the Informant, Spy Stash, Black Market Hub) because of a large increase of difficulty from level 2 to level 3. Boost up your defensive skills and get a feeling for the level 3 ones before doing the harder ones.

For me, the Ferox was a good place to stop and get my advanced Learning skills out of the way before going on to battleships. It's a big enough and nice enough ship that you can have fun with it while you spend a few weeks training.

Edited by: ThunderChicken on 05/12/2005 17:52:52 Edited by: ThunderChicken on 05/12/2005 17:51:05 Ferox is an interesting ship. Definately low budget way for training up for the caldari battleships. Missile skills, electronics, engineering, evasive manuevering...pretty much was said above.
Recently I have been using a passive shield tank setup, no shield booster at all, and it works pretty well. Since I boosted the natural recharge rate of the shields to an insane amount, effectively if I had a Large Booster running all of the time. I cannot take credit for the suggestion for that setup, but I will post exact setup later when I get home from work.
It was something like 2 Large Shield Extenders, Photo Scattering (EM resist), 2xM51 Shield Regens, 3xShield Relay, PDS. Around 6500 shield. High slots were Limos and Malkuth, with a comedy small nos and 150mm rail. Also have 5 hammerheads for drones.
The only real drawback is i am SLOOOOOoooooW...something like 167 km/s. Pretty much a space turtle.

Edited by: Harry Colorado on 05/12/2005 18:50:01 Hi all,
thanks a lot for all your feedback. I really appreciate your help. One thing is sure now... I am getting myself a Ferox! I will sit down a look through your suggestions to see what I can afford. I think i got some nice ideas.
I think I have to work on my defensive skills before getting in touch with the big babys! Some of my skills are as follows:
Battlecruiser: 3 (will train soon to 4)
Afterburner: 4 Evasive Maneuv.: 4 Navigation: 4 Warp Drive Ops: 3 (just training to 4)
Heavy Missiles: 3 Missile Launcher Ops: 3 Missile Bombardement: 2 Rapid Launch: 2 Target Navigation Prediction: 2
Hull Upgrades: 2 Repair Systems: 2 Mechanic: 2
Electronics: 3 Long Range Targeting: 2
I still suck in Gunnery skills and I dont have Scout Drones at all.
What would be your next step to train? I think I have to get Medium Hybrid Turret and a lot defensive skills.
Thanks again,
H
BTW... Where can I get this T2 stuff? I not even sure what it means.

Basically, you will need 5 in a number of skills to use tech 2 equipment. I would not even worry about that atm, since you need to build your base skills up. Electronics 5, Engineering 5 are a definate. Missile Ops 5 would not hurt, as most people use this as a missile platform than hybrids, even though it has a bonus to hybrids.
Getting to 4 will be good in the long run for that added 5% resist, but honestly I would stay at Battlecruiser 3 for now, since you have more pressing issues with the formentioned skills.

I'm suprised no one is going with the ship bonus and fitting five rails. With so/so skills and one tracking computer, I get 30km optimal on antimatter and 60+ optimal on iridium. A couple magstab 2s in lows will add some kick.
You can snipe most frigs as they move in on a straight line. Two assault launchers, a web, and medium drones will take care of any that get in on you.

In game, dunno, but they are listed: http://www.eve-online.com/itemdatabase/shipequipment/shield/shieldpowerrelays/1422.asp

I am using the standard ones, and have little problem with cap with the Photon on, all weapons firing, before all target are destroyed or run away.

Rails are nice guns for Da Rox but the cap on that baby is not so wonderful and with the Mag Stabs going in place of an extra PDU you find that when things are getting nasty and up close and personal and the 250mm rails are not hitting you have no power left to boost like a beatch, that's another reason the missile set up is so sweet. I have over 4.5 mill in gunnery, T2 rails and all that jazz but still find the 5 x heavy launcher and 2x 250mm (or 200mm for added tracking and less damage)Rail set up the one that leaves my heart in my chest and not in my throat

Which Heavy Missile Launcher would u suggest to use? I know it depends on the skill and budget but what is your favorite and why?
Does it makes sense to put in a ie 19mio offer for a Ferox or is it better to buy straight from the market for 23.5mio? I have never tried putting in an offer... no experience about the outcome at all.

Advance Limos / Malkuth heavies, lower fitting cpu/cap usage than regular.

As good as possible ;-) Standard launcher will do it for you in the beginning anyway. I think I had limos in mine, found them as loot on lvl3 missions. Not often, but eventually I had a few.
@above poster; Reason for not using rails at this stage is prolly because ppl are aiming for Raven. So no real use for gunneryskill, better return on investment getting those missileskills uber.

The more expensive the better, as always ;)
I prefer XR-3200 - "upper middleclass": not as expensive as the Arbalest-deluxe-launcher, but with some nice benefits. Limos would do a good job too.
It's a question of your "job" too. If you expect to go *boom* very often, Arbalest or XR-3200 are a waste of money, Malkuth would be better then.

Extenders vs Hardeners.
There are 2 times where extenders is more useful than hardeners. 1. If you just want to survive long enough to do something special (like killing 1 or 2 special targets or maybe survive long enough to get away). 2. If you are setting up a passive shield tank based on passive shield regeneration.
In any other scenario an extender (or plate) is just false security. Against npcs it's always better to setup a tank lasting tank than a tank based on just surviving longer than your target.

Not quite.
On a good many level 3 mision you can do think in stages of sorts. Finish off a group of enemies. Recharge and then move to the next group.
Also if you get hit by a big group of NPCs the extenders can often keep you alive till you have killed enough that your boosters can keep you alive.
Now I am not saying to use extenders and no hardeners, but a combo is often best. This is especially true against Angels where you cant hardern everything as much as would be nice.

On a seperate note - lately I have been running all my lvl 3 missions with 5 assult launchers( and a couple of 150 rails as space fillers).
It just makes it extremely simple to do them. When heavies get buffed next patch I suppose it would be silly not to use the heavies.
I have pretty good skills all around so I have quite a bit of wasted resources.
I think my current build is.
High 5 assults 2 150 rail
Med 1 T2 larger booster(medium works fine) 2 hardeners 1 Large T2 extender 1 Shield boost Amp
Low
1 BCU 3 T2 PDU

I still say it's false security and you are better of fitting a large cap battery or smilar so you can keep the booster going.

I can tank through every lvl 3 angel this way so I dont think anything about it is "false".
I pull through most of them without the extender, but on a couple the initial hit before you take down a few ships is brutal.

When I said PDU I meant PDS.
Power Diagnostic System Ballistic Control System
Look over on the Ships and Modules board to find out more about them.
