Edited by: Dracil Cegon on 08/12/2005 18:03:17 Now that I actually tried pinging from campus with their nice connection, I found that I get a 215 ping from here (they have a 5ms ping to Google). That made me curious as to what sorts of pings people on the West Coast of the US get pinging 157.157.139.10 (oh traceroute doesn't work, our campus blocks off the trace at like the 4th hop).
The thing is, while in-game with our current crappy dorm connection (that's being linked to this campus connection in a few weeks), it doesn't feel very laggy in-game. Well, my warp drives go up to 75%, reset to 0, and then zoom to 100% a lot, and thrusters get drawn in front of my ship when slowing down, and weapons taking a long time to untarget on a destroyed ship, but other than that, I don't usually notice the lag much.

Closer to the backbone of your areas Internet City Hub, the better. Nothing to do with the west coast in general, just your respective distances via networks.
I moved from a very large city to a college town, its respectively less reliable go figure, since colleges started this whole non-sense, but thats corporatized graphical human physical representation for you, having most of the hubs actualy located in Downtowns.

I've only noticed it hurts during a fleet battle. 30+ players and the advantage goes to those with the better latency.

But is that because of the latency itself, or because of something else that also causes the latency, like not enough bandwidth?

inetnum: 62.153.202.0 - 62.153.203.255 netname: DTAG-TRANSIT5 descr: Deutsche Telekom AG
Ah - that could be why: 157.157.139.10 is listed on RIPE as being in Iceland - so maybe the packets travel around a bit trying to get to Iceland then come back to London. (?) (or maybe it does go to Iceland then gets sent over a private link back to London, or something)
I wouldn't expect Linx to route packets to Germany if the destination was in London. It's normally better than that..
Maybe if the servers ARE in London, if the network was moved to being listed as actually being in London it would be quicker as there are undoubtably quicker links between the US and London than between the US and Iceland..

PvP is very playable for me. Sure I get a 1s delay minimum but all that means is I can't be the tackler. Just got to adjust your gamestyle a bit to compensate. __

Interesting... so if CCP somehow figured out how to stop it to go through Iceland first (either it's going through CCP itself, or it's going through some Icelandic company that puts their servers in London), then latency could be improved all-around for everyone by removing all these detours!
