F1 cars are regulated to drive around 350 I believe. They just aren't allowed to go faster on the tracks. This thing drives 412 on a good road. Is still faster then 350 I think.

Originally by: Car Site Babble In the real world, this 736kW and 1250Nm combines with the 7-speed, all-wheel drive transmission and a 1600kg kerb weight to propel the Bugatti Veyron to 100km/h from rest in 2.9 seconds.

4 wheel drive, 7 speed box.
Turn off all the driver aids in that thing, as well as in the F1 car and it would eat an F1 car for breakfast through a quarter mile, and probably handle a track better.
Formula One relies too much on driver aids like Traction control, Clutchless semi-auto boxes, Launch control, and lots of other silly stuff.
Remove all that, and all you have is a really expensive carbon fiber go-kart that can't get it's power transmitted to the road without spinning it's rear wheels through every gear.
The Bugatti has the weight to get it's power to the road effectively, and therefore the downforce to hold the road at lower speeds without the driver aids if driven properly.

Fun fact for j00z peeps. F1 cars produce so much downforce, that they would infact be able to race upside down and stick to the surface on which they drive.

umm... this year kimi raikkonen did 370 km/h down the straight in monza. i think some were even faster in practice and the speed trap is a bit before the braking zone which means he was well over 370.
didn't the veyron only reach 407 km/h. even the 412 km/h is slower than the speed the bar honda f1 car reached at the airport in mojave.
the veyron had some problems braking the 400 km/h limit when a swedish journalist was driving it because he had the ac on ------------------------------------------- Insanes numquam moriuntur! |

there is no launch control on f1's nowadays. there is no way in hell that the veyron would even be close to a f1 on a track even with the f1 in low downforce mode and the traction control turned off.
here's the proof of a lola champ car beating the veyron's claimed figures: http://www.roadandtrack.com/assets/download/0509_mile_spread_carts.pdf

Yes, it is limited to 400km/h, Yes an F1 would win in cornering and poss acceleration (veyrons best 0-60 in tests was just over 2.5 seconds) however, with the rear spoiler on the veyron retracted it can get to 300km/hr in just over 14 seconds and unlimited has reached 448km/hr before it ran out of test track, at this point the car was still accelerating. There has been speculations about taking one to the same place the land speed record was set to find actual top speed, but because of the cost and rarity of the cars and the safety implications, nobody has yet done so.

Ok Beefy, lets just put it like this. NO ROADCAR can ever match an F1 racer on the circuit, ever. Its a simple power to weight ratio.

As others have mentioned, F1 cars use a lot of downforce to be able to balance speed along the whole track, which is generally dominated by curves. In circuits like the old Hockenheim, downforce was not needed as much, and top speeds were higher, while in Monaco, for example, corner speed is the prevalent concern. If you were to lighten the downforce created by one of these cars it would beat hands down the Veyron and any other road car in existance, even with the limits the FIA puts on F1 car performance (for safety, mostly, since F1 cars are getting faster by the week at an alarming pace).

the speed of f1 cars isnt only restricted by their airodynamics, they also change the gearing inside the gearboxes to suit the tracks they are at, and due to the small size of their gearbox casing's i doubt whether they would be able to fit big enough gears to reach their full potenial speed?

I don't think they're selling for ú5m though. Didn't they say that was the 'cost' of making them and they where going to sell for somewhere around ú400k. Could easily have been ú800k I wasn't really listening by that point.

According to Clarkson you could let the F1 car get to about 120mph before you moved the Veryon and you would still beat the F1 car to it's top speed. That and Mansell knows that the Veryon would eat up a F1 (guess you F1 guys would know this if you paid attention to the show or even ******* watched it) as Clarkson asked for a drag race F1 vs Veryon.

Clarkson was talking about the McClarren (that how you spell it?) F1 at that time, not a Formula 1 race car which is what they are talking about. However, he and yesterdays guest both agreed that the Veyron would outpace etc the current Masters racecar which they also had in the studio, that had a top speed of just over 200mph and a 650hp engine. Also, although an F1 racecar would beat the Veyron ofver a certain number of laps, the Veyrons Gearbox lasts 15-20 years of abuse... whereas an F1 race car's gearbox only lasts a race + qualifying... therefore, pu the 2 together and race them against each other for a full day and the race car would be in flames while the Veyron just kept going. It's the same with top speed, the Veyron could go for 12 minutes at full whack and just run out of fuel, an F1 racecar at full speed for 12 minutes.. well it wouldnt make it, it would explode... owned

not sure how long it will last but i know they had to spend ages developing it the same as bentley did cos the prototypes used to blow themselves across the road due to the amount of tourque the engine produces.

ok. lets clear this all up with my flawed memory.
The Bugatti was designed simply as a theoretical exercise to see if it was possible to build a car with 1000bhp. It costs 5million per car to build (the control stalks on the sterring column come in at ú4500 EACH). IIRC they are only building 10 and they are selling them for ú840,000 each. At top speed, the engine is sucking in 10,000 gallons of air per minute. It takes 12 minutes to empty the fuel tank (at 100 litres) The engine has 10 radiators on it including one to cool the axle fluid The Bugatti would beat the McLaren F1 (up till now the worlds fastest road car) to 200mph. And it could allow the McLaren to get to 120mph before even starting. (and thats from a STANDING START) It does 0-60mph in 2.5 seconds. Its limited to 252mph. As the car accelerates, it actually changes shape to present a more aerodynamic profile to wind resistance. The gearbox was designed by the same engineer who designs Formula 1 gearboxes. It took him 5 years because the design needed to be robust enough to last more than the 4 hours F1 gearboxes are rated to last.
In conclusion, this is an orgasm on wheels. This would be like the Devs saying to us players: Tell us what your perfect PvP setup would be and we'll design a pretty skin to fit over it.
For those of you who don't have the benefit of Jeremy Clarkson on your screens, this guy is damn tough to please he will find the flaw in alot of cars that everyone else says is ok. After driving the Bugatti the only bad thing he could find to say about it was that he would never be able to own one.
And yes, I would run naked from London to Paris and then sell myself into slavery to have ONE drive in this car.

And yes, I would run naked from London to Paris and then sell myself into slavery to have ONE drive in this car.
just as a matter of interest why would you want to drive it? in another post didnt you say that speed was oh so bad? if so what would be the point of driving this car?

lol!
nice try.
I said I wanted to DRIVE it. not speed in it. Any car that well engineered is going to be a dream to drive.
If i wanted to drive it at high speed, I'd do it in an appropriate place such as a racetrack.

Yeah, and you are saying that the F1 engineers didn't know they would be racing for a full day and could not make any modifications to the car to increase its durability? (15-20 years of "abuse" for a gearbox? )
Sheesh, The car/engineering know-how represented in this thread is of godly proportions. Like a bunch of 4-year-olds arguing who's daddy can slap their moms bottom the hardest.
