Next time when you're in an expensive ship with valuable cargo that has no decent insurance, pirates will be sure to pop you without asking for a reasonable ransom that could save you millions of ISK.

read the sig. but in the case that i take the risk and the odds are favored against me, at least the pirate will save me the effort of having to say "screw off lamer" in local.

Perhaps CCP can set something up in the protocol to help identify connection status...
Use signal handlers within the code base. If Windows terminates the program (via the Task Manager, right clicking the icon in the start bar, or any other hot keys to terminate active program, capture the signal and before quiting notify the servers of a "logout".) If the connection drops, without a "logout", odds are increased to say that it might be a network issue... or Windows crashed on the client (which signals are then not processed by user applications)...
All CCP would have to do is better speculate a connection loss with a client. Then, they can check other states/flags such as PvP Timer... if it's a "logout" + "PvP", ship does not vanish. If it's a non-"logout", regardless of situation, ship immediately vanishes to safety.
This can still be exploited, someone pull the plug on their modem being the most likely one... in this case, CCP can also increase the odds, by testing if it can reach your likely gateway (which can be attained during login and cached--a traceroute be conducted as part of the login sequence to acquire your Gateways IP) and if so, it was probably a "logout" via "yank the modem cable". Odds are, if you can ping someones gateway, unless they purposely did something you should be able to communicate in some way with the client and if you can't, it's not a "network problem" any further than the client.
