Title states it all. No this isn't a troll, flame or insult toward Goblin but rather I ask a legitimate question. What exactly do his article's contribute toward in improving Eve? I read all the pretty little news sites mainly for laughes over the propoganda war and of course for the abissmal articles written on an almost daily basis by Gelvon Goblin.
See I understand that all if not mainly a majority of the news written for EN24 and Mittani well are spun. But even I fail to see any legitimate contribution Goblin brings except for infuriating those who endure the pain of reading his opinions on making Eve like World Of Warcraft.
His articles hold little context. Rather than taking an outward look at Eve as a whole, he often gloats from simple things like his wallet balance, to his "acceptance" into TEST (as if this was an achievement worth any merit at this stage in the war), and of course let us never forget my fellow simpletons he achieved the "gold cap" in WoW.
No I'm not kidding. Riverini you are on the CSM. Why not stick someone else to fill the gap on the "economic" section of your website? Why keep giving this person chances to make EN24 look comical?
Please someone enlighten me. How exactly does comparing looting boars for gold give one credentials in speaking on the vast intricate workings of Eve's economic system? Let's not even touch his opinion on null sec, frig pvp, combat experience vs care bearing etc.
My point is Riv. You read these forums. You are a CSM. Do us all a favor and send this little green goblin back to the Horde where he belongs. |

No not butthurt. Just rather perplexed. You'd think after three consecutive weeks of Goblin's articles going down in flames in the comments section someone would have taken notice
I also find these threads interesting seeing as players are influenced to a degree by editor's and writers in Eve's major news sites. After all information is key in influencing peoples opinions. |

Its tough to find quality writers and en24 writers have to have the added stigma of being rigidly anti-CFC/goons. Except for Wilhelm Arcturus who is actually in TNT- one of the eldest CFC alliances. But his blog posts are often whimsical and filled with beautiful pictures without any alliance rhetoric.
Goblin fancies himself a superior player/intellect than most which is ironic considering he is currently being treated as a doormat by TEST alliance who have allowed him once again to donate billions of isk for the privilege of being in a large 0.0 alliance. Despite all of his hurf blurf about how highsec is where the money and pvp is at- Gobbo wants to be in 0.0 since most of his characters in training are capital characters, and he recognizes caps to be a form of ~endgame~ if there were such a thing in EVE. |

Wilhelm doesn't actually write for EN24, he just allows riverini to republish his content. That is also the case with Gevlon, Ripard Teg, Kirith, Mord Fiddle, Mabrick, Poetic and several others: they run their own blogs but riverini simply reposts it.
Most of EN24's own content is utter tripe, and with all of their talented writers (both of them, 'heh') writing for TMC now I don't see EN24 being anything but an aggregator of EVE blogs in the future. Twitter: @EVEAndski

I agree with the OP. Glevon Goblin is an absolute waste of space. He proves with every article that he knows nothing about EVE, does not listen to anyone else's opinions and has this thing about separating people into tiered categories (of which shockingly he is at the top). I like EN24, but there's more and more of these nonsense articles appearing on there, and I'm not bothering to go on there most of the time now. Now I just jump straight to the blogs like Jester's Trek, or onto alternative eve news sites.
At the end of the day EN24 wants to be seen as a serious news site, and these posts go directly against that image. The Indecisive Noob - A new EVE Fan Blog for news and stuff. |

I never read his blog, but he is pretty active on the TEST forums and his contributions are usually received very well by the other forum users. GG has some rather radical ideas about eve, but sometimes this offers a fresh and new perspective and leads often enough to really good discussion (hell, we even have several CFC members still on there for the very same reason). Sure, some of his ideas are crap, but at least he doesn't insist and admits when he is wrong. Just think of how bad an average post by me is, and then realize half of them are even worse |

No, all of his ideas are crap. He has no EVE knowledge and proves that with every article. If TEST are taking what he says seriously, then I am no longer surprised that TEST have failed to keep like 15 systems so far this week.
The ONLY thing that he's supposedly good at is market manipulation, but that's only based on his word. He's never shown evidence of his wealth or its source, so he may have just scammed a lot then pranced around screaming "I made half a T, honest gov".
EDIT: Oh and when has he ever admitted he was wrong? He just says anyone disagreeing with him is a troll and as such should not be listened to, and we're all "morons and slackers". He's also a PvP master, apparently better than all alliances, so maybe you should just chuck him on defense and be done with it. If we all show up in hulks, we're doomed. It's not an attack. It's the truth. HE knows nothing about EVE, yet claims to be an expert. EN24 promoting him is pushing utterly incorrect information on everyone that reads it, and it's a disgrace for a site that aims to be even remotely serious.
Just for an example, he claims that because he ganked miners in high sec, that gives him 100% efficiency (even though it's really 50% as he loses a ship with every gank). HE then goes on to state that if you divide an alliance kill total by the number of members, his figure is higher (just a note, he doesn't divide his score by his total character count). From that he deems that he is better at PvP that every alliance member of every alliance.
This is just one example of a nugget of information that come from this idiot, and EN24 supports him. Ridiculous. The Indecisive Noob - A new EVE Fan Blog for news and stuff. |

I don't understand why there is so much hate about this guy. I usually enjoy his articles, which brings a different and sometimes refreshing perspective to the game.
He is arrogant, ok. He sometimes speak as if what he says must be taken as a generally true statement when its only a point of view. But then, you just have to use your critical sense.
His article about competitive and objective oriented people was really intersting according to me, and there has been others.
But it is just stupid to try to censor him, as censorship in general is a stupid thing.

Considering all the hate in this thread I have taken the time to read his 2 newest posts on EN24 and the one referred in this thread:
- New scam: contract margin trade warns about a scam he fell for. VERY useful information
- PvP vs objectives apply the concepts of being competitive vs. objective-orientated on the different activities in EvE and explain how the same activity can view viewed completely different depending on your focus. This is an interesting view and it parallels the product vs. process-orientated personality type concepts used in RL management
- EVE Online AUR to save DUST 514 make the suggestion to let EVE and DUST interact through AUR. Also a very interesting suggestion
From this little sample it seems he write informative and interesting articles. However most of the comments to his posts contribute nothing, so if anything were to be removed I would suggest that the comments to his articles was shut down. |

I think the guy understand your way of playing better than you understand his. The only issue is that he is showing some sort of wariness about your playstyle and promotes an alternative, when you only show complete disdain for his. Well firstly he "allegedly" makes a lot of money. And the way he does that is by grind selling high and buying low, it's not hard to do, but most people don't want to spend all of their time in Jita updating orders. You can easily make enough isk to plex all of your account 2 days a month, then spend the rest of the time doing whatever you enjoy. he just spends all 30 days grinding. If that's what he likes, fair enough, but that doesn't make him a marketing master.
Read his articles. He says things like how hes going to change high sec missioning forever and then says "look, there's SOE missions for LP!" which we know. He then gives 2 god awful fits for how to dual character them. See my previous post for how hes the greatest ganker. He makes sweeping statements about sections of the game that he admits to having never experienced, such as null and wh space. Honestly, if he just put the ground work in and actually investigated what he goes on to complain about I might have some respect for him, but he doesn't, he get's an idea of what to write, then just makes up facts and statistics to support it.
Also, the way he describes people in morons and slacker, socials, anti-socials and rationals as if they are a tiered group and you are basically dirt until you read his stage, the "rational" tier makes me wonder if of a night hes out decapitating kittens and stalking people. It's truly serial killer stuff, and all utter nonsense.
I'm not asking for him to be censored, he can post to his blog as much as he wants. What I'm saying is that a news site like EN24 pushing his articles alongside respectable writers is a disgrace to the writers and the site itself.

What are you talking about? I'm already the Pirate Queen so what other infamy do I need? And you are right about one thing. His "thinking" would revolutionize Eve to a point where pve is glorified and combat trivialized. He fails to understand the pretense of combat let alone it"s merits and forsakes small gang pvp as meaningless.
I guess if all I cared about was my wallet flashing and my isk balance was considered "endgame" I daresay I'd have the same mindset.

Think EvE doesn't have themepark features? PI is a classic example of it. It'll creep into EvE because just having an open canvas to play on becomes quite boring after awhile, when the only player action is shooting each other (don't know about you, but folks can just get that without a sub or F2P/P2W schemes with a FPS game). From this little sample it seems he write informative and interesting articles. However most of the comments to his posts contribute nothing, so if anything were to be removed I would suggest that the comments to his articles was shut down. Margin trade scam - all known knowledge and he doesn't even understand why it happened, so it doesn't provide any useful information. As far as I can tell it was the "specific item" scam by the way. Your contract relies on receiving an item that is specifically generated with its own id for your character, so it's impossible fr someone to do unless they have the EXACT item you used to create the contract.
PvP vs objectives - utter nonsense. It's basically talking about how objectives matter over PvP skill because that's what he's currently into. It treats PvP players like they aren't setting objectives, because if HE can't measure your target from an external point of view, its not measurable. Since he decides exactly the type of person that fits into competitive and objective, he decides their motives and outcomes, so it's utterly meaningless. It's like me getting a red toy car and a blue toy car, moving them both myself with my hand, and making the blue one win then claiming this proves blue is faster.
EVE Online AUR to save DUST 514 - Again a pointless topic. He says you cant trade isk as it would break the economy, so trade aur. But aur you can buy for isk, so it's the same thing... He also seems to think the economy is what causes DUST to fail to kick off, but realistically it's because console FPS players generally don't care about the meta, they just want to shoot stuff. The rest of the problems with DUST is that is simply hasn't been fully integrated yet. Once planetary conquests or whatever it is comes out, it may spur more alliances to push for a DUST team. Then again, next gen consoles are out soon. If it's not moved to PS4, it will simply die.
Surely the quality of his comments will reflect the quality of his post. If everyone's calling it a load of bull, it's not likely to be all their fault. AS soon as his articles go on EN24 you can here the entire community sigh in unison. It's not just EVE though. Look back to 2009-2010 at articles about him from the WoW community. It was the same then.

If I wanted to play your run of the mill "sandbox" or if I was "bored" of Eve I would have long ago quit this game for something moresimplistic. Eve risks being dumbed down and the games Iinherent ruthlessness is what is it's most redeeming and ever changing quality
If I wanted to slay orcs I'd rather play The Two Towers for ps2 than give Blizzard another red cent |

There, cut to the chase on that post.
I've only visited that Greedy Goblin guy's blog once a few days ago after reading a thread about him in the Missions and Complexes forum (the OP seemed about as butt hurt about Gevlon as you do).
So I went to the blog and read how he used a Cheapfit Marauder with dualboxed logi to do missions and make isk. The tone of the article was fairly smug and imo arrogant, as if it were the greatest PVE thing anyone had ever thought of when in fact something like Dual Boxed domis (w/sentries), typhoons, RR cheapfit wormhole style Tengus or Ravens (supporting with FoF missiles) would have been both cheaper and much MUCH more effective. I didn't like the experience of reading his blog post.
So I, Jenn aSide, Empress (yes Empress because of white girl avatar) of General Discussion came up with this unique, never before heard of, never before tried, totally experimental plan to solve the problem.
I shut down the browser window that had the blog post on it....then I didn't ever go back again. You should maybe try that too.

No I'm not kidding. . And Ripard you are a CSM. Do us all a favor and send this little green goblin back to the Horde where he belongs. (Also I fail at life for confusing Riverini and Ripard Teg. People need to learn the difference between news and opinion pieces. His articles are opinion pieces for the most part. Every serious news paper has them and they can be equaly off and soaked in agenda. I take everything GG writes with a grain of salt, often i roll my eyes but occasionaly he has some good ideas or gives me a good ideas by extrapolating from his ideas due to his outside of box thinking approach and that's why i keep reading his blog.
As for his wealth, i don't think he's lying about that. Only think he hasn't revealed all his income sources. I can confirm that he infact trades implants and skill books as he states. Lot of the big and aggressive orders on the market are indeed his. |

I have. And like I thought once PL got bored (or upset over that little AWOX) TEST's allies would pack up their toys and go home. Mittani also has always been the diplomatic wizard regardless which makes me smile.

Yeah, most of us have been saying all along that the batphoned alliances wouldn't play it out to the end. TEST had a window of time to set strategy and build a proper defense. Instead they chose to welp and lead there members to death. Now their members are showing up for less and less fights, and with the allies pulling out, there's no way they can hold the line.
Though honestly I think one of the biggest issues was the way they handled SRP. They said "Yes, we're broke, but look, we've paid the whole SRP queue". This was a bad idea. Think of it from a members point of view. You've been waiting for up to a few months for your SRP payout with no movement. Then finally they pay you your SRP. But at the same time they announce financial defecit. Why the hell would you buy a new ship and send that out to die? You probably won't get the SRP back for that one for years.
An I know, not everyone thinks with their wallets and there's a lot of loyal members, but there will be a fair amount of people either not showing up or showing up cheap from this, which put further strain on the group. then as more members start to splinter off the individuals get more and more pressure on them. It's a bad way to be.
Personally I'd have built as many doctrine ships as possible and contracted them to people to show up in. This way you are providing advanced SRP, and as long as you monitor it for abuse, you can be putting their minds at ease in advance, in turn encouraging them to show. Personally i think there are enough elitist players in EvE that moan on about how they want EvE to be, and how they think others should play the game, that a different perspective is welcome at times. EvE is compairable to WoW exactly because it's an MMO, and though the two are extremely different, its an important comparison to make to try to temp those players over to our side. I mean, seriously, why moan about another persons opinion when it doesn't completely match your own? Do you honestly expect everyone to play the game for exactly the same reasons as you? Oh yeah, i forgot, they must be playing the game wrong!
I'd argue that those who want to play EvE for all the reasons the elitists hate, such as living in a completely safe highsec, have just as much a right to their opinion as anyone else. Those that disagree with them can go and gank them to their hearts content. Such is the beauty of EvE. But ultimately it's simply an excuse to get a nice fresh supply of easy kills, rather than actually doing PvP in the areas of the galaxy where it's supposed to happen.
At the very least, i'd recommend you don't read blogs by people whom you don't agree with. Stick to your own opinionated box and you'll be much happier. Post with your main, like a BOSS! |

But it's just as easy to say that when Riverini started syndicating Gevlon, public voices from the south were few and far between and it was just a lack of options. But again, I have no idea. You should ask Riverini this. No... If I did I'd have not asked you to ask him. I just figured you would have a way to contact him that he might actually respond to. Maybe that "free" advertising will do him some good. By the same account you responding to my question is "trolling" simply because you must have your opinion heard and contribute nothing toward the actual discussion. |

Gevlon posts good stuff on his blog. He gets the hate because he doesn't hide his WoW background in shame like a good Eve player is expected. He also judges success differently than a lot of Eve players, mostly its isk made, and not ships exploded.
As an example of a good article: Introduction to trading: the first steps to riches
It is not an experts guide to trading as some of the comments in the article would criticize it as such. It is a "trading first steps" article for newbros. I did what he said and in 2 days was up 100mil. I am now buying t2 destroyers+fit for almost 3mil less than I was just off the sale orders. All I need do is plan a little bit ahead and be patient.
Considering that the average Eve player lives in hisec, runs missions, mines, industry, mostly solo and hardly interacting, I'd say Gevlon is way above average in contributing to the Eve community. Even if you don't agree with the justifications I've given, he does at least spark interaction among a lot of the player base. That's pretty good contribution for one player. I have 5 different chars that I play. This may be my main, or maybe not. I have no idea. |

His first steps to trading said basically Buy low, sell high, never buy from a buy order or sell to a sell order. It's a great way to make a decent amount of isk if you've got a lot of capital. If you don't have a lot of capital (ie, if you are new) it's pretty stupid. It's gambling on the price gap being due to fulfilled buy orders, and ties up your capital so you get less cycles. New bros shouldn't tie up capital for long period of time on gambles. If you process your isk (like manufacturing or PI) then sell swiftly but for a decent markup, you'll get less isk/cycle, but more cycles. Realistically you can start a fresh character, transfer him nothing and have 100m in the bank by the end of the day.
Even his high sec knowledge is pretty bad. His SOE missions "changing missioning forever" is a good example on this. Expensive inefficient fits for thing that everyone knows exists. The problem is, the way he writes is designed to confound the unknowing, and he chucks ins a bunch of made up stats, people like you swallow it up as fact.
The "average player" does not solo in high sec. a lot of the people in high sec soloing are people from elsewhere. I usually have 3 or 4 high sec characters logged on when I'm trading, as well as a missioner grinding for standings. My mains live in null though. All Gevlon contributes is made up "facts", made up statistics and egotistic opinions.

His advice isn't geared toward making a living at trading. Its to save money while doing your normal Eve things:
Quote:The first step is thinking ahead of you. Do you fly a Rokh? Then you'll need Rokhs. So instead of buying an overpriced one when you are podded back to your staging system, how about setting a buy order a few days before? If you could wait 3 months training to fly a Rokh, you can wait 3 days to get one much cheaper.
which is what I am now doing with his advice. I don't want to play Stock Market Online, but I do want to pay the least for the ships I'm going to explode. You want to be a professional trader and "work the market" and talk about "velocity of money" and all thats fine. I just want catalysts and incursus + fit at the cheapest price possible. If I can get them cheap and sell a few extras at a profit, so much the better.
Talking about your alts doesn't make your play a group effort. They're all still you. Interacting with the Eve community does. Now you in particular do interact and contribute, but alts are not evidence of such. I have 5 different chars that I play. This may be my main, or maybe not. I have no idea. |

Interacting with the Eve community does. Now you in particular do interact and contribute, but alts are not evidence of such. Right, but you said this is for noobs. Market velocity is important. If you have 1b, and you sit ona 20m buy order for 2 days, you have 980m to play with. If you have 20m and you sit on a 20m buy order, you are stagnating until that completes. Once it completes, you might make 15% on your investment. But in the same time, you could have make say 10% on your investment 4 times over, reinvesting the same cash over and over. That's why for new guys cycling is important. Once you have a few bil, you can sit on market orders for long periods of time. Also, you are gambling on ship prices not going down. A few weeks ago you could have set up a Jita buy order for hounds to get them at 26m or so, which was cheap. Now they are at like 21m or so. right now, your catalysts are cheap buys. By the time you need them they could have been bought at way over market price. Advising new guys to always place buy orders is not a good idea.
Sure you can save a bit buying in advance, but that required you to have the capital to buy in advance. A new guy with no ship cant afford to place a buy order for a bulk load of ships. He's better off spending the extra 200k to get the ship now, then make that 200k back in the time he would be waiting around waiting for it to complete. Gevlon talks about it from the point of view of a newbie with capital. Which is pretty stupid.
I don't point out my alts to wow you or show you I interact with the community. I point them out to show you that that's why high sec is full of players, because most players in null, low and wh space all have alts in high sec. That doesn't mean that the majority of the playerbase is high sec. The Indecisive Noob - A new EVE Fan Blog for news and stuff. |

I'm glad you enjoy station trading, I do not. I'd rather be out blowing something up knowing that in a day or two I'll have a new ship waiting for me when I leroy this one into some bad guys. Who am I empowering? We are discussing the quality of opinions allotted to a blogger whom gets posted on one of the major news sites for this game. It isn't just myself but many other EN24 readers as well have expressed distaste at his lack of evidence or even factual claims on the pieces he writes.
My point being is that he contributes NOTHING of value toward bettering the content we all enjoy. All you do is flail and scream about my topic inciting goon level hatred which makes no sense whatsoever.
Maybe you should go troll someone else's thread or go write a local government official on how certain houses in your neighborhood are out of code. I'm certain they'll be thrilled to hear your bitching

Except his articles DON'T help new players in anyway shape or form! All his articles do is give him a platform to gloat about his wallet amount and make a babbling ramble about how small gang pvp is unimportant or how he'd run TEST finances.

Someone doesn't know that.. new someones join Eve every day. Yeah... What he tells you is wrong lol So firstly, I'm not just talking about station trading. In fact, half of what Gevlon is talking about IS station trading. But I'm talking about trading, mining, hauling, manufacturing and PI AKA "Trading in general". As a trader you can make a lot of money quickly by investing your stock into fast cycles. Sitting on capital is not a good idea unless you have a lot of capital. Gevlon has a lot of capital, so he talks to you about what HE does, but it's no good, because you don't have billions of isk.
Secondly, If you are not a trader, then why read a post about how to get started in trading? Sure, right now, you've got a bit of cash because you've bought your ships in advance, but if their price has gone down by the time you need them, then you've wasted your cash buying in bulk. Prices can move quickly in EVE, traders know this. I'd NEVER advise a newbie to just buy loads of what he uses without talking first about market trends. If a newbie is going to sit on capital it's better to sit on it liquid so it's available if a good deal does come up rather than sitting in ships that may or may not be used one day.
And yes, I've said he posts thing people already knew, but that because he leads up to them talking about them like they are going to be a revolution in EVE, then they are are half assed post full of incorrect information about stuff we already know about. It doesn't help noobs cos half of it is wrong. Just because you think it sounds right because he says it with such conviction does not make it so. Goblin suffers from WoW-itis. His whole lens is tinted by his experience there. For some reason he thinks that gold-capping toons in WoW means something. Some people were playing the auction house and making a mint long before Gubbins came alone and popularized it. Making Scrooge McDuck piles of ISK only matters to other people making piles of ISK. Accumulating ISK for the sake of accumulating ISK is just ONE way to play the game and have fun in Eve. To Gubbins, it's the world. I have more respect for the likes of Helicity Boson who find thoroughly entertaining ways of amusing themselves in Eve with scant resources.
That being said. Goblin, (shocking!) occasionally writes something that is not-shite. Although, a day or two after he will leave a stinky upper-decker that rivvy-poo will repost. Again feeding the trolls and unmoderated badposting in the comments section. Riv is a pro at being a one-man-band but even he can't do everything all the time. |

Oh well, it's your funeral as they say and I won't argue further, , but what you're doing is dumb.
While I agree with your overall sentiment that this ranting is pointless it is no different than players coming to rant about a feature or any other cause within this game to CCP. They do it because they enjoy the product or service offered. When something bad taints that image it's a fairly common reaction to let it be known. While yes it is very easy to skip over the posts, not read, say that they don't pay for the service(which isn't true), the actual point is that the customer is unhappy with the level of service.
They have made it known that they have tried to reach Riverini through his officially provided channels with no response. So they are choosing to elevate the issue. Whether that is the correct course of action is for neither of us to decide.
At the end of the day I feel that the OP and friends feel that the continued syndication of this author will and has significantly hurt the service, possibly to the point where they can no longer enjoy it. At the end of the day I see the OP trying to preserve a service they enjoy.
Of course this is an opinion, please feel free to skip it and not reply if it doesn't suit your tastes. |

Not really. Goblin has no effect on myself personally and my enjoyment of Eve. Rather I find his articles a detriment in ways of influencing less experienced players simply because they don't know better.

I'm not one to talk about a subject which I haven't personally looked into, so I read, and I post, but from that it is clear that he has no interest in fact, only churning out post after post of egotistic bull.
Now that he is in TEST, he's added bias to his posts, so for the time being I'll continue to post to counter that bias in the comments.
Still, this is about EN24, which is a popular site and houses actual news, as well as writings from people well respected in the community, including CSM members. Reposting an article means they support the article. Reposting articles filled with nonsense mean they support that nonsense, and that's generally a bad position to take if you want to be taken seriously. Countering negative idea is not a positive idea, but another negative idea. If you want to make your writing useful and worthwhile, make a blog and post things. And make your posts good enough that riverini has no choice but posts them. |

But that changes nothing about this situation. Gevlon is feeding noobs incorrect information, and a site like EN24 should be reading what they repost.

Lucas Kell wrote:Jenn aSide wrote:Tara Read wrote: blah blah incompetence ) There, cut to the chase on that post. I expect my noble prize for awesomeness to be in the mail shortly, because no one has ever conceived of a plan such as mine! Yeah, that is the solution. However (yes, there's a however) EN24 is one of 2 main news sites, and they have opposing bias, so generally it's best to read both. EN24 chooses to post Gevlon's nonsense as a news article. That's what the complaint here is about. As EN24 don't seem to respond to the mass of complaints on it's site about Gevlon, someone chose to raise the topic here. I fully support it and think EN24 should stop publishing Gevlon's articles. He will still get his supporters on his blog and they can go chat nonsense all the want.
TMC isn't really that biased, one senior editor is in a pirate corp, one is in test, plenty of writers are other alliances including pl and ncdot along with some independents. The only section of the site that is entirely written by Goons is world of tanks. |
