Edited by: Winter Solstice on 16/12/2005 17:17:02 The stunning RMR enhancements to this ship have brought a smile to my face, and i'm sure to many other Cyclone fans as well. I was already happy with it's performace as an effective L3 mission-runner, and post-patch it appears even better.
However, the changes in CPU/PG/SBoost%/Mid-slots/Cap/DroneBay, and the reports of MUCH tougher agent missions have me wondering about how to equip this boat in RMR for running all L3 missions, solo, reliably.
Let's get a few build suggestions going, and make this thread a repository for RMR Cyclone NPC setups.
It would be nice to see various setups from people who have actually used them in RMR, with a slight explanation of tactics used. I'd love to see a few artillery setups, autocannon setups, full shield-tanking setups, partial tanking/partial support setups, etc.
I'll start with my first draft of an all-around setup that was tested last night:
HI 5x 720mm 'Scout' (PP/TS/Nuc) 2x 'Arbalest' Heavy (EMP/THR/EXP/KIN/FoFTHR) 1x 'Arbalest' Rocket (DEF/EMP/THR/EXP/KIN)
MID 1x ABII 1x Medium SBII 1x 90% (named) Webber 1x 30% (named) Painter 1x SBamplifier I
LOW 2x PDS II 1x 10%DMG/ROF (named) Gyro 1x 10%TRACK/RANGE (named) Tracking Enhancer
DRONES 1x EMP/THR/EXP/KIN
Obviously this is a long-range setup, with point defense backup. Engage at 50km+/-, paint, artillery/missiles. Defenders from the rocket launcher mitigate incoming long-range dps, reducing strain on the weaker, non-hardened shield tank.
The webber/painter/drones/rockets take care of any tacklers, frigs, drones, or kamikaze cruisers.
Weakest point to this setup is the non-hardened shield, but quite frankly with BC skill to IV or V and shield/cap skills to IV or V there haven't been any scary situations yet. The long range setup is designed to pull small groups of targets at a time, and take most of them out prior to them closing inside of 10km. The tank is only truly necessary in breaking an ambush of targets at warp-in.
Just remember to switch your ammo types on the artillery/heavies as the targets draw closer. Start with Nuc at 50ish, switch to TS at 30ish, and end with PP at 20ish. Start with EMP/THR heavies, finish with KIN/EXP.
Again, this setup is just intended to be an 'all-around' L3 mission runner, and it is still a rough draft for RMR. However, it performed exactly as I had hoped last night, i'll test more this week and edit the setup as necessary. I'd love critique and setup suggestions from other Cyclone enthusiasts.
I'm also quite interested in suggestions for a 3-hardener full-shield-tanked autocannon setup, if anyone has found a good loadout yet.
Fly safe!

I haven't used one since Shiva beta testing for obvious reasons. I will possibly touch one now, but I know my minmatar ships and I wouldn't step near it with artillery, even 720mm IIs. It screams for a autocannon setup with a shield tank.

I use an arty cyclone for missions aswell , but i would be really worried about non-hardened shields , especially with those nast webber frigs around. Good luck tho.
And yes it does demand an AC set-up ;) I just need more skills.

Edited by: Kager o on 16/12/2005 18:13:30 I was testing on sisi using a 5x720 cyclone with all pdus in lower, shield tank and double webber.
Worked awesome since I could instantly pop any frig outside 5kms, and had 2 med nos and a tractor beam to gather loot.
Made it through the 2nd gate area of Silence the Informant with no problems, literally insta popped the 2 30k frigs there, then killed the 2 cruisers, however the next spawn I aggroed way to early, and 3 cruisers spamming missiles was too much for my tank.
Doable for sure, but make sure you watch how many long range ships you are fighting at once, and make sure you can warp out if needed.
In my opinion, can still run level 3's faster in a bs, since the cyclone is slower dps, and isnt that much faster of a ship anyways. Only bonus is its hella cheaper.

This is my setup, and I'm loving it.
5x720mm, 3xMalkuth Heavy Med Booster 2, Kin/Therm/Em hardeners, 1 large rego extender 3 PDUs, 1 Gyro
I tanked the second stage of The Spy Stash, which I'd never been able to do before.
The setup is a bit tight on cpu, and carry med drones for the frigates.

Back in my Empire days I ran L3s in my Cyclone. Always needed a overdrive in low so the enemy rats wouldnt catch me before I busted them.
Long range worked much better than short range. It does not really have the CAP to get into a dogfight with lots of ships during a mission. 720s and heavy launchers.
The only problem was it did not have enough power to bust the structures in a resonable amount of time so I could get the loot out. I used my Tempest instead. ____ If your not dyin' your not tryin'. |

How long can you keep that tank running, Menelak? I'm curious as to if there is a perma-tank solution involving 3x hardeners with a Med SBII.

With booster it runs for 4 minutes, giving 58.95 total HP recovered per second with passive recharge figured in (that's with my relatively crappy shield skills)
I get 22.19 hp/sec with the passive recharge and 36.75 hp/sec with the booster, often times a group won't be able to saw through my shield hp, but if I start getting to about 30% shield, I'll kick in the booster and that just heals me right up.

u could use the 3 heavy launcher points with no missle bonus but nos is so much better for keeping the shield's going 5 AC, 3 NOS, 4 Gyro

NOS are great for autocannon setups, but I'm not going to invite ships under 12km just so I can use a NOS on them when I'm using Howitzers.
Plus, they won't fit on my setup =P
For Autocannons, I'd run something like this: 5x220mm, 3xMed Nos Large Booster II, 3 Hards, Cap Booster (or amp, I havent even tried to see if this will fit) 2xPDU, 2xGyro
Reasoning behind the large booster is, generally, when you're up close you're going to be taking more damage.

My current post-RMR setup:
5*720s, 3x Malkuth Assault Med SB II, EM + Thermal hardeners, Sheild boost amp I, x5 proto webber 2x PDS, 1xgyrostab,1xtracking enhancer Med drones
I'm still working on this setup quite a bit. It gives me a good bit of unused grid, but I can't sustain the tank for as long as I'd like. I plan on upgrading to PDS IIs soon, I'm just low on the cash ATM. Don't have the skills yet to use T2 720s.
I tried a setup with 3xheavy launchers, but I found the missiles and drones to be inadequate for frig defense, even if the frigs were webbed. I was only getting 20-25 damage on webbed drones from the missile hits in testing last night. Even taking the frigs out from range one or two would slip past my point defenses and get in close. I don't have the best missile skills, but light missiles, especially with the increased explosion velocity, seem to do much better. The increased drone resolution meant they weren't hitting the frigs nearly as much, either.
*sigh* ... so many more skills to train... _______________ Spiritu Sanctum |

I just haven't been sold on web drones yet. If i'm using a webber, that means that I have a tackler or rogue drone inside of my artillery range, which is not good. The goal at that point is to focus fire the drones on one webbed target at a time of my choosing. If I had an autocannon setup though, that could realistically track/hit an inty frig or scrambling rogue drone.. then maybe. I just have never been impressed by the AI for player drones, and hate giving them any more responsibility than point defense DPS.

Is it worth running the 3 NOS in high slots against NPC rats? Wondering if some cap rechargers, PDS II's, or a combo of both would give you the juice to run the tank, while freeing up 3 highslots again for DPS?

Can your 425's track a non-webbed, non-painted 30k tackler rat? Or rogue drones orbiting you at 1k? My only fear in that setup would be scrambled/webbed by tackler NPC's and not being able to hit them back. Sure drones help, but some of those NPC's have tanks that take a very very long time for drones themselves to break..

Well, I tried dropping the Webber/Painter/Traacking Enhancer to try and build a stronger tank, but was really really disappointed in the ability to deal with tackling NPC's.
Even drones and rockets seemed to have a much harder time, I just can't see doing L3 missions without a Webber at the very very least.
For you autocannon Cyclone users out there, are you able to take down high-speed targets inside of 1k km using nothing but your AC's and drones? Or do you still wind up missing a lot and taking forever to kill them?

Here's some setups that I use for the Hard lvl 3 missions 'Spy Stash' & 'Black Market Hub'
Hi Slots: 5x 720's 3x Assults Med T2 SB, Amp, 3 Hardners (or 2 Hardners and Web) 2x PDU, 2 Gyro
Spy Stash (Angels) Angels do mainly Kin and Exp damage now in RMR, making them much easier to tank. They still do a bit of EM and Thermal but not enough to worry about. Just use 2 Hardners (Exp & Kin) and a Web
Black Market Hub Use 3 Hardners (Em, Kin, Thermal)
I've never been Warp Scrambled on these missions. Has anyone else? Could someone give a list of Scrambling NPCs.

I just don't like ACs on the Cyc. It's a slow boat and many NPCs don't come within 10Km of you. (Merc Commanders!)Running a AB would gimp my tank. And I love my tank. So it makes it rough killing Cruisers that stay out of your range.

I lost a Cyclone when I was warp scrambled once in an L3 angels mission, but I don't remember which one. This was right after I started flying Cyclones, so my skills and fittings were still limited.
Now, with a setup almost identical to yours (FTW!), I almost never have to warp out. So I have no idea how often the rats warpscramble, since there's no way to pick it out of the random messages that pop up. I do my best to not let the friggies in close, by shooting them first with my arties. The 3xassaults, drones, and webber make pretty short work of any that sneak under my gun range. _______________ Spiritu Sanctum |

I remember the ripper drones for sure scrambled, and there was usually one or two in almost every L3 drone mission I ran.
The only frig I remember scrambling me was a merc-type on stage 2 of Silence the Informant.
I have yet to find a list of RMR-verified scrambling mission NPC's.

I used to use a cyclone with a 720 setup but am now looking to use it as a support ship in small gangs.
Its job would be to tackle the tacklers and do gang assist stuff, leaving the BS to do long range damage. Does anyone have a setup for this?
I was thinking along the lines of: 5 x 220s, gang assist, nos and something else in highs, 1 or even 2 webs in mids + shield tank stuff (large extender and large boost?), AB maybe not needed, PDS/damage/whatever in lows
I guess the advantage of 220s is that it leaves loads of grid spare.
Comments welcomed (but no armour tankers!!!!)
