Help! Im taking on memory! But on a serious note... Eve tends to, about twice a day, start gobbling up my memory and cpu. It starts with a little hiccup, and suddenly everything stops working quickly, frame rate drops etc. Upon examination, task manager reports the program EVE is using 150k-250k memory. Left untreated this crashes my computer and makes me weep :( Anyone else having this problem? Ideas for a fix?

Restart client. Works for me. Otherwise you could go to the hardware store.

150-250MB of memory = normal. That's not a memory leak. 500MB+ = memory leak.

Mine, 162MB for 1.5 hours. All looks good. Uninstall and try a fresh install using the updated 500MB full install? I think you have a dodgy library that didnt get updated properly when you patched manually or automatically. ----------------

I'm having the same issue. It seem the more jumps I do the worse it gets till I have to reboot. I didnt have memory probems before the patch.

I always do a fresh install after a major patch, now both my accounts are crashing because of this memory hog.

Edited by: Zavernus Hamarabi on 18/12/2005 04:20:27 Thing is though, it *suddenly* starts happening with a visible increase in memory until things start slowing down.
That is, it cruises on about 100k then it markedly starts increasing from there.

sorry for you guys, seems you are having an "Issue".....mine is using..umm...40- 118 megs..depending on what's happening...been running for 4:25 hours:minutes...now...don't try this at home kids...but kill virus and spyware thingies..it does wonders..and that incudes scanners... Checking on latest DX version is also very good...
Btw, I'm running on 512 megs mem..with 2.5 gigs as a virtual mem..non windows controlled with both latest Bios and drivers....

BTW, set your virtual memory to 1024MB. Anything after that, even with 2.5GB, your PC will start to trash and hard disk will grind non-stop ----------------

Everquest 2 takes almost 2 gigs of mem to run between virtual and hard mem. I have not monitored client-side Eve mem usage tho...

Well, you have 512MB physically. If you need more than 512MB, Windows will swap between hard disk and memory. Usually, virtual is set between 1.5x to 2x of physcial memory. If you set it like 4x the amount, eventually, you will exhaust your physical RAM and information will be loaded often between hard disk and RAM so your computer will "lag" between swapping the data between the devices rendering your PC doing nothing but swapping all the time. However, once it hits all of your "total" memory, your PC will blow but at this time, everything will be so unstable because of the "lag", will even take ages to "restore" the system back since programs will eventually get out of memory and crash. Might as well let the PC blow sooner than later.

My machine is not infected with spyware or viruses. I remove that filth from computers I fix everyday at work. My scanners are up to date. This only started happening after the patch.

1. If it is memory leak, it is always 100% replicable. What did you do to "activate" the leak?
2. Does it leak while doing nothing for that amount of time it takes to notice the leak? ----------------

Suggestion: Go to a quiet 0.5 system. Keep on jumping in between the system and its neighbours for 10-100 times? Does it leak if you do so?
Larger systems are harder to test because of all other problems that is going on. If it does show leak, then doing 1/2 the amount of jumps that you get for smaller systems may reproduce the same effect on larger systems.

There are 2-3 threads about this in "known issues". It IS a prob after the patch, but not for everyone it seems. Mine goes steadilly up and at about 500-600MB my dear pc stops whinning and just freezes (to death) .
I saw somewhere (and it could be that from my experience) that it may have something to do with chat channels (shame we cannot close local and corp to test this properly) .
I came into the game a few days b4 Cold War, which was also a nightmare,so I hope this will be fixed with a new patch soon. No reason to whinne and/or petition right now, really. Devs are up to their knee in probs I'm guessing .
@ Jenny Spitfire: I'm sorry, but I think you wrong about that being "normal", or specific to a pc. I think it has something to do witht he patch. But anyway I always wanted to tell ya, I'm deeply in love with you , eeeeeeer your avatar , eeeer whatever (there are no girls in eve, right? )

I was guessing though and like all guesses, we can always be wrong. At least, there is some good reason behind guesses that can help with finding out what is going wrong.
Hmmmm, you might not like the auto-updated RMR avatar, she looks like she is on drugs And yes, there are girls in EvE. ----------------

ya your almost right...Theoretical it should be 1536 max, so I should stick to that but I'm sorry to inform you, it simply doesnt work that way in practice, since all programs arent created equally it seems..... If you have a "white paper" on how windows manages virtual memory that is reliable I'd be very much inclined to have it..

If I have time, I will search the web but not now. Sorry.
Memory usage varies on how you use your PC. If you are planning to open 100000000000 JPGs on your PC, you may not experience trashing that bad. If you are doing some stuffs that requires it to be running or having the data "on-flight" all the time, then you will notice trashing. Dont have to take my word for it, I am saying it because I have experienced it many times before. At the end of the day, it is how you are using the PC. For me, I have data "on-flight" all the time so I prefer the programs to crash when they need to rather than them appearing running "properly" but no they are not running properly anymore.
