Pretty much. What matters is that you're playing a game you enjoy :). If you want to be given a stupid title for playing the game for a while, play Everquest 2 :p.

If the definition is 'played beta' am I a vet then?

I played beta, I was there at armageddon day, and the day after I quit. I just couldn't pay for EVE off the allowance I got back then. 3.5 months ago, I came back. New account, new chars. Am I a vet then?

Too beta you had to be invited or else you came not on in. Did apply soon enough 2 years for the game started but only a few came in. So veterans only those who played from the very first beginning in may 2003. And the game was a week sooner out in america then in all europe. So americans have always had a headstart.

I played EVE in beta 5. I played until version 1.0, then I stopped playing because I didn't think I had the time to invest in the game. I came back December of last year. So I think I kind of consider myself a pseudo-vet, though to be perfectly honest I just don't have the knowledge and scope a real vet would.

Was nice to be greeted warmly by my beta buddies when I came back though.

beta?? so there will never be any new "vets" then??

i dont think that is fair for all thoose new players who dream about somday earning that "tag"

i think you could call yourself a vet when you have built up some kind of a reputation and established yourself as a player.

IMHO, if you put in more than 20+ hours a week playing this game (as in participate, not just log in to change skill training) you are a Veteran of EVE. Reputation warrants the level of respect each individual veteran gets. Quote: Definitions of veteran:

noun: an experienced person who has been through many battles; someone who has given long service
noun: a person who has served in the armed forces
noun: a serviceman who has seen considerable active service

Imho a pilot becomes vet if he plays intensively around 6 months. That gives him enough experience.

Tough truly with Eve changes a vet not palying 2 months has a lot to learn. So maybe he is vet player but he might be not quite good with new ships and equipemnt and rules and latests pvp fashion.

I experienced it personally:).( playijjng Eve since beta , tough i was only 1 month in beta or so)

After have been playing my first day and gotten a pretty good grip on things and getting a shiny new Bantam, I logged on next day to discover my character was gone/never had existed
I wanted to start from the bottom so I didn't took the isk compensation offered from CCP.

So how would it work if you had a beat account but due to "issues of a personal nature" and the lack of a internet connection, you where not able to use this account?

(The account was used by a friend who kept the account and I got to create a new one
  )

I've played since first week of release (was there for amrgeddon day in final beta), have managed not to die since September 2003 and still have the same full set of +3 implanmts (now 27 months old implants) . . which has gotten me to the 41.5mil skillpoint position :)

IMO the vets should be those to work long and hard to either improve the game or improve the experience of it for those around them. I'm not refering to ISD here.

IMHO you know you're a veteran Eve player when you say something starting "I remember back when we had..." [multiple MWDs, Concord agents, bribable agents, skill points for fitting modules or undocking, BS pwning frigates at any range, Sarum Prime as a gankzone...) and somebody else says "Huh?"...

And for today's non-vets, just think someday there'll come a day when you can say "I remember back when we could fly 8 heavy drones from a Thorax" - and that generation of n00bs won't believe you, they won't...

IMHO, if you know the strenghts and weaknesses of every ships/modules ingame, the names of most named modules and NPCs, if you know how the game's mechanics work and how to use them at your advantage, and if you have at least some experience as a pvper, then you're a Vet.

A veteran is in essence someone that has nothing more to learn (or very little, in some highly specialized areas), the time you take learning it, be it 6 months or 3 years, has little to do with it.

Veteran, hmm i'd say you calculate how many hours you've put in the game.. some people may have had an account since beta but don't do much and others that have had their account since late '03 or early '04 and have played many many more hours.

I'd like to note that if you've played 4hours a day, 365days a year for two + years... can you calculate how many hours that is?
how many days? weeks? of continuous playing :)

 Generally with any mmorpg

 0-3 months - Noob
 3-6 months - Rookie
 6-12 months - Average player
 12-24 months - Good player
 24+ months - veteran
 48+ months - legend.

That's my personal opinion. There will be legends, but they will be few and far between. 4 years is a long time to invest in a game through all its changes and manipulations. I dare say in another 18 months the game will be substantially different enough to make noobs out of the most seasoned players.

Thats plain and simple bull****, after each patch even the most experienced player has to adopt to the recent changes, has to learn about the new ships, modules etc.

So, yes i think i am a "vet", but that does¦nt meen i know everything about the game, and i still get killed by players who are less experienced as i am, which is one of the great things about this game.

Ego is not bad unless you overdo it
And actually when you have played for 48+ months or more you should get some respect from other players, like someone mentioned in this thread. Its a long time to play the same game.
