I was just wondering, where all the new players have come from? I remember when having 14k players was a huge deal - then I see the 20k mark has been broken!! :o
Logged in the last couple of nights to find that theres 14-15k players on, which for my timezone is more than 40% of what it was.
Dont get me wrong, I think its great that more people are discovering EVE, i'm just curious - WHY - all of a sudden??

Well.. we are at a point where the hype of Wow if finally going down. So some people are just tired of it and exploring around. WoW is only one of many games that are losing the big hype.
EvE core is solid and that makes the game attractive and only makes it grow.

EVE has slowly become a larger player in the MMOG market. While we may not be able to compare to WoW's or Lineage II's subscription bases, EVE has broken the 100k subscription mark. Our partnerships with IBM, TMS and others are increasing EVE/CCP awareness in the industry and our pending expansion into China is helping that even more.
Word of mouth, internet marketing and CCP pushing EVE to the edge (and beyond!) are all elements of the increasing awareness and we're nowhere near done yet.

I myself come from MMORPG's like EQ1, DAoC, WoW etc and I wish I would have found out the truth about EvE a long long time ago. Back when it came out some of my friends tried it and simply dismissed it as a "space mining/trading" game. I didn't care to look at it after those reviews, so I was busy hacking away at orcs for the last couple of years! The same old xping on mobs to level and get better equipment cycle type game is getting old...

Well if EVE is going to be pushed to the edge, no im not an IT person so I dont know all about servers/lag/loads/nodes etc, but is that going to cause a lot of problems for the already large player base?
I dont want to doubt CCP's abilities, but after playing for quite a while could the sudden stress of masses of people affect the gameplay?
I guess what Im asking is - is it going to be worth putting EVE further out there, gathering more and more players to the point where the game will cease to be playable? |

When I stated we were pushing EvE to the edge, not only are we doing so on the client side, but the hardware side as well. According to Hellmar's newest Dev Blog, we are doing what we can, including investing a huge chunk of cash, into upgrading the server equipment in an effort to ensure playability is not negatively impacted by an increase in the player base and concurrent user count.

I logged in this morning around 6am and saw 11k+ people online. It used to be that much on Record Sundays. Heh, love to see the game growing and prosporing (although you have to take the whiners with it ).

They all had 5 Hummer Limosines, but their garages got nerfed and now it's better for them to have 9 Mini Coopers than the 2 Hummers. ----------------------------------------------- MAKE THE MACROERS SCREAM |

I'd have to say that the recent exodus of players from SW:G probably has something to do with it. Eve is like the promised land compared to it.
After the stunts that SOE and LA pulled with the Trials of OB1 expansion and the NGE it was more than enough for a lot of their players to pull out. Even if the NGE had been uber enough to make me wet myself I couldn't see continuing to support a company with absolutely no respect for their players and continued underhanded business practices.

I'm surprised to hear that CCP broke the 100k subscription mark already. It wasn't that long ago that there were celebrations following the 70k mark. When was the 100k mark reach? Can that be correlated to any particular event(s)?

While I wish we were turning that much in profit, the end of the month statements are much lower. There are staff to pay, rent and utilities, bandwidth, loans from the original funding, hardware upkeep, contractors, and a whole mess of other expenses. We are turning a profit, but a much smaller one than subscription income might lead you to believe.
The 100k account figure I quoted is for both subscriptions and trials. We are sitting around 86k subscriptions and 15k trials. I apologize for the lack of clarification.
As for cars, I'm still driving around an 8 yr old F-150. I might buy a replacement next year, but certainly nothing German or Italian! Maybe in 10 years!

The game had less than 60k subs 6 months ago (July), didn't it? that's more than a 40% increase in subscriptions in 6 months. Continue this trend and you'll have over 120k subs next July.. though I'm guessing you'll hit that number much sooner ________

I've played a few online games in my day, and my general experience has been that as long the majority of players will continue to play the game, the devs don't care about satisfying their player base beyond that minimum unless financially/temporally convenient. EVE Online is, to me, a huge exception to this general rule, and not only do you guys put a tremendous amount of effort into this game, but you put forth this extra effort without significant financial incentive to do so. To all the developers involved with EVE Online, don't pay attention to those *******s that tell you you're doing a terrible job, that you should roll back the patch, that there's no good reason why there are bugs - I'm a software developer myself, and I can only imagine the incredible complexity of a game of this scope. To understand everything about this game I'd probably need a P.H.D., maybe two of them. Don't pay attention to anyone that tells you you're getting rich at the expense of the players, to those that fail to appreciate your efforts (especially this close to christmas), and those who think they could do a better job than you. I believe that they're dead wrong. Keep up the good work, I'll be behind you all the way!

macro miners. I found 33 of them between oursulaert, renyn, algogille, and luminaire. it's probably one or two guys running all 33 of those, because their reaction times are at least five minutes, sometimes over 20. and it looks like they're passing off the accounts to other people, because the same names are displaying completely different behavior at different times of day, and they're all logged in all day as far as I can tell.
I went to jita yesterday and there were 30-40 ice macroers.
how many hundreds more are there in the systems I didn't visit?
