As I sit here waiting for my drone skills to get up to par, studying the various drones and drone skill combinations, a thought crossed my mind- RMR made any ship with a 25m3 drone bay an incredibly powerful blockade asset.
While a bay that small can only hold one sentry drone the pilot of the ship, with the appropriate skills, can still control five of them. In normal combat that isn't a big deal, but for the defense of a fixed asset it opens up some interesting possibilities.
1. Cheap little Celestis, or any ship with at least a 25m3 drone bay, parks at asset and deploys single sentry drone.
2. Another ship deploys a sentry drone at the same location and then warps out of system, breaking their control lock.
3. Original pilot scoops sentry drone, activates his control, and deploys it.
4. Lather, rinse, repeat.
With a handy supply of drones in a nearby hanger a small group of cheap cruisers can deploy a web of sentry drones that can give a very warm welcome to anyone warping in. Mix and match some EW and drone control modules on the controlling ships and you get some even more interesting possibilities.
I'm sure I'm not the first one to think of this, but it sure sounds like it would be fun. Well, as long as you weren't the one at the wrong end of the sentry drones. I suspect you wouldn't be having much fun at all.

I was thinking on that too. Makes for an interesting tactical situation.
9 ships bring in sentry turrets, someone who can control 10 drones scoops and redeploys them independantly wherever they want using an interceptor after deploying their own. ----------------------------------------------- MAKE THE MACROERS SCREAM |

Small is good, but cheap is even better. I used the Celestis as an example since it's a great little ship, save for it's horrible model, that has some special capabilities that would make a sentry blockade even more effective. A handful of them could control enough sentry drones to brighten anyones day. Heck, with careful drone placement you could even prevent cloakers from being able to get through the blockade without dropping cloak.

I was thinking:
High slot: Nosferatu. Low slot: Armor repair
Drone bay: Armor repair drone.
Useage: While your own armor repairers are going, have the armor repair drone orbit (and repair) you. Nosferatu the drone (which has, I think, two billion energy capacity). See where I'm going with this?
What do you think?

Perhaps then, a Dev could come forth and clarify. In the wake of a drone change like this, it's obviously going to come up.
I don't see why it'd be much of an exploit though. The last ship left would effectively be babysitting a minefield. ----------------------------------------------- MAKE THE MACROERS SCREAM |

"Which is an exploit? The OP (Original Poster)'s idea or mine?"
If i recall right what was said on test, it's the concept of scooping someone else's drone and then launching it as your own, if it allows to walk around the limitation of drone bay size of one's ship.

this is a well known exploit
was better pre RMR, get a ship that holds say 2 drones, release them, get a mate to come along and dump 15 or so, have him warp away, scoop them and release and voila, you have as many drones you can handle in a ship that can only carry 2.

Doesnt nosing a drone make him attack you?
and if they had numerous threads about it why haven't I seen them and why havent they fixed the code. Making someone warp away then when they warp back in to find out you have all 9 of his med drones with a taranis is (in theory of course if it is an exploit) funny as hell in my opinion.

Pre-RMR drones had only 1 cap to suck from. But with RMR they have armor rep drones that have cap. So in theory you could suck on them all day and tank. But, I wouldnt consider that an exploit.

I never knew of it as an exploit, this is first thread ive seen this being discussed.
Ive been doing a rather difficult storyline lvl3 10 part mission in a vexor (thorax sucks now), with my total 4000 skill points in gunnery, but 2.5m sp's in drones.
I go out, get my ass kicked with all 3 ogres out and warp out. I get more drones, warp back in again and release more drones, then slowly make my way to my other drones....so now I have 5, with one spare in space.
This is the first time id thought of this actually working because normally my drone bay is large enough to hold the drones I can use. |

This is where I disagree as to whether it is an explot or not. The OP's instance uses an in game function, with the appropriately trained skills, to create an excellent use. There is still a logistical requirement (delivery of drones) , and I think that it is very clever.
It obviously has displeased the Devs, and hence them calling it an exploit (can someone direct me to a link where this is confirmed?) but perhaps this ruliing may change with the drone changes now implemented. BUt we would have to raise teh issue to them for review.

LMAO ...the dev's are up their neck in sorting out TQ... I really doubt they may have responded to such a possible exploit already ... especially since its less then a week that the drones are out...
if it was labelled exploit on test server ...then how come it was rolled out to TQ without correction ? Its a little too easy to claim its an exploit... rather then yet another Q&A oversight on the part of CCP rolling out an unfinished patch...

Adv. Drone interfacing.
And nos'ing your own drones was the exploit. Nothing prevents you from scooping up someone else's sentrys and deploying them as you can do it yourself.
Leave with sentry Deploy sentry return for new sentry rince and repeat.

This is a pre- rmr problem. People used to whine all the time that my Imicus of Doom with 10 heavy drones in orbit around it was an exploit. Not an exploit i said. The culmination of my skill training, and some planning and preparation. A frigate with 10 heavy drones hehe, put it next to a couple of dimnix and people dont know where the drones are coming from lol.

Since RMR came out you can now move drones from your cargo bay to your dronebay while undocked. You just right click the drone and select "Move to dronebay" or whatever it is. So all this leaving drones and having others pick them up is unneccessary.
I haven't tested it myself, but you could theoretically just deploy the sentry drone, move one from your cargo bay to your drone bay and launch that one too.
I intend to try something similar with my Ishkur tonight, and see if i can't launch a heavy drone and then load another from my cargobay...

I wasn't aware that was possible. If it is it makes the "rolling deployment" technique even more attractive.
Sadly, it does appear the technique is considered an exploit. I can find multiple people pointing that out using Eve-Search.com, but I can't seem to find an actual dev quote saying the same thing. Does anyone have a link handy? Has anyone actually been warned that the technique is officially an exploit?

I was able to just the other night. I'd accidentally left a hammerhead in the previous area of a complex, and rather than go back for it i loaded one i'd just looted from my cargo bay. This was directly after the 24h downtime (Hence i for once actually got to complete a complex). It deffinately works, but perhaps it has to do with drones in local space etc...
I thankfully finish work in around 4 hours time, so i'll try out all the different drones with this.
For the record the ship i used at the time was a Thorax with 5 Hammerhead 1's.

Maybe it varies on the ship type? Perhaps a frigate is too small to complete the task. Have you tried with a cruiser? or a Thorax at least.
I'm really curious about this now because i'm certain i did it the other morning, otherwise i'm going mad (no comments please).
Are you leaving the station with the space for one drone in your dronebay, or with it full and then trying to move it after launching all drones? If that's the case then CCP pre-empted my idea, and already made it impossible to release more than you can withdraw to your dronebay.
Like i said, i'll try this tonight with each ship i have and decide wether to order a straight-jacket or not depending on what happens...

I can't see it being 'really' an exploit, just something unintended that the devs don't like. In my mind, if something seems logically possible, given the game world physical rules, then it's not an exploit.
If this is an exploit, then so is mining to a secure can (taking advantage of more storage space than is in the cargo hold), Instas etc.
It wouldn't be impossible for CCP to make it so that a ship attribute can limit the number of drones controlled as well as it being a player attribute.
I'd thought of doing this trick as well, but it never crossed my mind it would be an exploit, as, if the game allows it, it's something you could do 'in real life'.
PS - in fact, given CCP's definition of an exploit: The common definition of an exploit is "to use the game mechanics in such a way as they were not intended for the purpose of gaining an unfair advantage over other players." it seems like Instas are definitely an exploit... Hands up everyone who's used Instas...

OR
you could just load the sentries from your cargo hold and deploy them one at a time.
WHY HAS NO ONE NOTICED THAT!!!!!!
Your drone bay may be smaller, but you can now load from cargo to drone bay, which means you can put an endless number of drones into action if you can control them. It also means any ship with a big enough drone bay can deploy as many sentries as they can control, assuming the drone bay can hold at least one sentry.
Oddly enough, I can now use four med drones with my caracal where before I could only use 2. ___________________________________________ The deeper you stick it in your vein, the deeper the thoughts there's no more pain. ___________________________________________ |

I haven't done this myself, so don't accuse me of anything.
But I'd like to hear word from the Devs as to whether or not this is considered an exploit.
A) You are able to scoop abandoned drones into your drone bay (and not cargo hold) B) You can control more drones (via skills) than your drone-bay can feasibly hold. C) Sounds expensive and inefficient in all but a few specialized cases.
It seems like it would be easy code to limit the number of controlled drones (of type) to the size of the drone bay for any given ship. Or simply not allow one to scoop other people's drones into your drone bay, make you instead cargo them.
*shrug* ... I'm a newbie, so my perspective may be different.

Doesnt matter really, CCP never posted it was an exploit. Hell im a forum ***** and i didnt even know you wherent allowed to scoop and launch other peoples drones so there cant have been any major discussion about it on the forums.
Apart from that, untill a dev or GM comes and says its an exploit i plan on assuming otherwise, since players are usually wrong anyway ------------------

you could just load the sentries from your cargo hold and deploy them one at a time.
WHY HAS NO ONE NOTICED THAT!!!!!!
Your drone bay may be smaller, but you can now load from cargo to drone bay, which means you can put an endless number of drones into action if you can control them.
Um, that's exactly what my posts said?
