I have been focusing primarily on Caldari ships and missiles, but I have been told that isn't a good way to go for PvP in-game by people in the help channel.
Despite having like 6.5 million skill points and having subscribed for like 3 or 4 months... I still know VERY little about this game... So I am looking at what is good to transition into as far as PvP is concerned since up to now I haven't really done any PvP at all... I got a couple friends into this game and one of them is going pretty hard at the game and wants me to transition into PvP with him.
So I am looking for suggestions as to what I should go into. Whether it be all new ships/weapons or a way to transition into what I have already been doing.
In terms of tips in general... What types of other skills should I start divesting into? Most of my skill points right now are shield tanking, missile launcher operation, and the likes because I planned on eventually utilizing a drake (yeah) for PvE missions.
Thanks for help :) |

Fly with your pvp friend or join RvB i'd say.

Those people in the help channel -- all I can say is, when taking their what they told you about Caldari ships and pvp into account, remember that opinions are as numerous as a certain body part.
Knowing another weapon system (I'd suggest hybrids just to start because those can be used with Caldari ships too) and how to armor tank will broaden your options and make it easier for you to hop into fleets where there is only one or the other type of logi. But by no means should you think that shield tanking and missile systems are worthless in pvp. Missiles can be quite lethal.

Rockets and missiles are strong in frigate PvP. Kestrels and Condors are both good.
If you need isk then faction warfare. Otherwise RvB to start. You need good navigation skills since range control is a large part if PvP. Condor would be kiting, kestrel would be either kiting or scram range kiting. Hooray, I'm l33t! -á(Kil2: "The higher their ship losses...the better they're going to be.") |

Another good option .... ewar! Nothing says hello like a good electronic warfare pilot with good skills (which takes time to get up to effective level)...but ewar pilots are usually called as primary targets in gangs/fleets so tanking ability is a must (both shield and armor tanking)
But as stated before, training other racial ships/weapons systems and tanking skills will be invaluable in your pvp adventure. |

Ha ha, yes -- train into a Falcon. That will simultaneously make you the most loved and hated person in any fight you go into.

Join a null-sec corp. It's full of guys who will(or rather, should) invest in your success, and tend to have a lot of experience, programs, and out-of-game resources for you to draw on. They'll lead fleet roams that you can take part of, and should be pretty easy to follow along with.
You could also join a low-sec pvp corp, but small-gang pvp is a larger step to take, if you're nervous and want to ease into it. |

- Firstly, take peoples opinions as exactly that. Opinions. At the end of the day, you should fly what you prefer and enjoy - or whats the point?
Whereas you are fairly limited on ship choices when flying only Caldari, there are decent solo ships out there like the Caracal (And the Navy Issue in particular). As-well as versatile ships for gangs such as the Blackbird/Falcon
Here are just two of many examples of other faction Missile Boats, for if you really wanted to leave Caldari, but stick with missiles The Sycthe is a decent Minmatar Missile Boat The Sacrilege is a great Amarr Missile Boat, while most likely out of your SP Range, it gives you something to aspire and work towards
If you arn't already aware of this tool, check out the EvE Fitting Tool (EFT for short). You can see and mock test nearly every available ship in EvE. Using the API feature, you can import your pilots 'skill-set' and see which ships you can fly, and what sort of EHP and DPS you can expect. A Great way to learn your limits, and see what ships you work best in

You will learn the most from actually getting into fleets and fighting in battles. Specific races aren't going to make you a better PVP pilot. Find a group that doesn't mind taking in new guys and they will show you fittings that work and why they work. This is the best advice I can give. The best way to have fun with it is to just get out there with your friend who is into pvp. Ask what he thinks about your ships and skills. Get together and form a plan for a duo roam. Caldari ships are great in pvp. Missiles and rockets are great in pvp. Just get out there and kill stuff. So long as you're flying with friends, win or lose, it will be fun. |

Knowing what you're talking about is not a prerequisite for posting in the help channel. Missiles are fine for PVP. |

good advice, Onyx.
On fleeting up-
Fleets are made up of specific ROLES. You should learn to play a role well first. In PvE (and solo PvP) you perform all roles- FC, scout, tackle, DPS, EWAR, etc. (which is why so many people utterly fail at solo PvP, they can't FC a small gang, but think they're gonna be a fleet unto themselves???)
All fleet roles can be performed okay-ish by non-specialists, so you can try them all before deciding on one to really explore. Exploring a given role reveals hidden depth. Tackle for example, is often seen as a newb job. But really exploring the role brings you all the way to flying a HIC and getting tackles on capital ships! There are no throwaway roles, each will reward a player that actually dedicates to it.
The term ROLE should weigh more heavily than SHIP-- role often determines the ship. So when fleeting up, you should be thinking 'what role am I going to fly?" rather than what ship.
As for just getting into PvP- I suggest piracy. Pirates tend to favor small hulls that newbs will have max skills in very quickly. So the new guy's limitation isn't skills as much as inexperience. Every time you fleet up you solve the inexperience issue. A newer guy isn't just a meat shield, before long he's flying the same fitting as the top killer in the corp.
While putting in some time on frig/destroyer hulls, avoid the pull of immediately training for larger ships. Go back and start filling in V's on your core skills. PvE allows for marginal fitting and core skills, but PvP fits are often extremely tight, cap intensive, etc.....so those 3's and 4's that got by in missions won't hack it against skilled human enemies. |

Not funny man, and not good for the thread.
Anyhow op, learn hybrids and fly cheap disposable frigs, both caldari and gallente offer excellent choices for newer pilots and are superb ships to fly solo or in small gangs.
Pick your fights carefully. Dumbing down of Eve Online will result in it's destruction... |

This is more good advice. The blaster harpy is very fun to fly and easy to get fights in. |

1. Fly what you enjoying flying, and skill up so you have Lvl Vs on anything that affects the ship and module performance 2. Get into a PvP corporation that focuses on small gangs and wins engagements. The corp can be a high, low, and/or null sec corp - doesn't matter. 3. Don't be afraid to lose a ship; if you are afraid, ship down or rethink your in game income strategy. 4. Look for any opportunity to PvP - bomber's Bar; RvB Ganked; etc.
Hope this helps. |

Rookie/NPC corp chat and the 'Help' channel have probably driven more people away from PVP in this game than all the random newbies getting blown up in lowsec have
Trolling aside, as a Caldari pilot, I can say that Caldari have some fine ships for PVP.
In the hybrids line up: Merlin / Cormorant / Moa (underrated but good) / Ferox (Could use some love) /> Naga / Rokh Missiles: Kestrel/Condor / Corax / Caracal / Drake / Raven(?)
And then you have the specialized roles like ewar: Griffin / Blackbird / Scorpion
Logistics: Basilisk / Bantam
The above is JUST the T1 line up, once you get into T2/Faction the ships are very much more than capable of solo/smallgang/fleet pvp
Keep in mind that while Caldari ship may not be the best choice solo, if it has a role in fleet, it tend to play its role exceedingly well.

Could give fleet wars a try.
Far as Cal ships not bein good for pvp.....lols.
The Navy Hookbill is probably the best all around t1 frig. The Hawk is in the top 2 for best af. The Crow is probably the last soloable t1 inty. The Merlin and Kessie are great for cheap fun. Griffin's for jams...
And that's just the frigs...... |

Wow, I hope more stuff comes this way.
I also have been in the game a very short time (3 months), but I'm in the Amarr fleet. I am trying to prepare for PvP as you are.
I stay with drones (backed by missiles) and lasers, because that's how the Amaar fly.
The advice to find a role and stay with it sounds very good. Every fleet has ships specifically designed for a particular role and works best in that role.
Hope you enjoy delving into PvP and I hope we 'cross blades'.

RLML Caracals are great. Merlins are great. Both are cheap, work well at low sp, and are Caldari.
For a newbie friendly corp, look at Eve Uni, Brave Newbies Inc, or Red vs Blue. All three are very different and provide very different opportunities, so investigate them on your own and form your own opinion.
I think Navigation skills are some of the most important for PvP. High speed Maneuvering 4, Acceleration control 4, Evasive Maneuvering 5 (so you can fly Ceptors eventually), Navigation 5, Warp Drive Operation 4, Afterburner 4, Fuel Conservation 4 are all great investments that don't take tons of time.
After that, T2 tank skills, rigging skills 3-4, fitting skills, and capacitor skills are all low cost, high benefit general PvP skills. Being able to deploy a full flight of Warrior II's makes a huge difference for flying cruiser and above.
Thermodynamics is absolutely critical and completely changes how the game plays. Get 3 for now and think about 4. |

Caldari are a fine choice in general and have a strong line of frigs which happens to be a good choice for starting pvp
Very few people with actual pvp skills/knowledge spend much time in that help channel
Good luck o7 |
