My first experience with EVE was the Beta.
I don't remember anything but mining in my Bantham back then and even tho I usually enjoy the hunter/gatherer role in MMO's, the release of Star Wars Galaxies made me forget all about EVE.
I created my first account back in early '06, when a few people I was playing SWG with got me interested in EVE again.
For about a year or two, I played on and off. With no real direction, just goofing around doing the usual mining and LVL4 running in hi-sec. Then, late '07 I joined an industrial corp on a whim.
Soon after, that corp joined a 0.0 alliance in recently conquered Red Swarm Federation territory. The alliance was soon evicted, sending me on a 3 year 0.0 journey, starting with flying Blackbirds against an invading Red Alliance and ending with me dropping my glorious Phoenix left and right in one of the biggest dread fleets of the time.
I think my "butterfly" moment was when I followed the remnants of my alliance into Venal, the only one from my corp. Logging out at the staging POS, still a member of my initial indy corp, and then logging back in; corp removed from alliance and getting blown up by the POS. After a quick chat, I joined the corp of the alliance leader.
I think for most people, finding their "way" in EVE, is something that just happens to them. Once you get over the initial learning curve and come to terms with the sheer scale of the sandbox, there's always something new to try out... and once you've tried it all, there's always something new to master.
My advice for anyone who has a hard time finding their "path" in EVE, is, join a player corporation. Finding a good one can be tough and if you, like I was, aren't really keen on space-guilds, join something like EVE University.
If you have to put the game down again, do so, and come back later.
I would recommend not starting from scratch with your character each time tho. Having a character that can do a little bit of everything pays of when you are still looking for your spot in New Eden. EVE is a skill based game, not class based. The nature of EVE means you'll almost certainly end up with a character who is a bastard child skill-wise. Try lots of different things with your 'main' and then train up alts when you find your niche.
