Hi, me again.
One of the things that caught my attention to start this game is reading stories like the battle of Asakai.
However, how do you read the kill reports on something like this.
I ask cause it shows people of same corp./alliance on both sides. Like El Hybridize. I see him listed multiple times under both Hostile and friendly?
Does that mean he killed both hostile and friendly?
=/ Hope i do not sound to hopeless.
Best,
Miram

Those are all the ships involved. Only those marked with the light red were actually killed. As far as them being listed both as friendly and hostile. With bigger ships they are often spider tanked and/or give each other cap when needed. This means that you have friendly ships in your target list. With all the lag caused in a big fight like this, it can happen that you accidentally fire or put your drones on a friendly. Could even be smart bombs hitting friendlies who trigger it.
Anyway due to this the computer can screw up and classify them in both lists :).
Hope this helped,

Sometimes that person may have aggressed his teammates, such as smartbombs, accidental friendly fire etc.
'Neutral' killboards always give dodgy battle reports since they don't really differentiate between who's hostile and friendly. If you go through corp/alliance killboards, those give more accurate battle reports.
Also, larger battles with multiple corps/alliance involved may also give weird reports at time. |

A battle report is basically a combination of a number of killmails in the same system during a specific time frame. Typically 1-8 hours. This means that several separate battles or even 1v1s could have occurred, but then all lumped together in one battle report.
For a ship to get on the system battle report, it must have either died or got on the killmail of a ship that died. To get on the killmail, you must have committed an aggressive act against them. That does not include reppers, cap transfers or remote sensor boosting. Ships, particular ones on a (dominated) losing side, do not appear on the battle report if they failed to kill anything and then escaped. Logistics ships often do not appear on Battle reports either, unless they get combat drones out and get involved in enemy kills.
Things get particularly complicated in a 3 way battle. Let's say a Minmatar FW fleet is engaging an Amarr FW fleet and then a Pirate fleet warp in or hot drops them. A battle report cannot cope with that, it has to assign all ships to one of two sides. In the first Killmail processed, a Minmatar pilot might get killed by fire from both Amarr and Pirates. Thus the Minmatar pilot is put on one side of the Battle Report and all his killers on the other. In later killmails, three of the pirates involved in the first killmail are killed by a combination of Amarr (who also featured on the first KM) and Minmatar pilots. The victims have to be placed on one side of the report and the killers on the other, but both already feature on the same side from the first killmail. Hence some will be duplicated and put on the otherside. The process continues like that adding the contents of one killmail after another and having to place pilots on both sides to indicate their hostile acts to different players.
Add area of effect weapons into the mix which hit both friend and foe, and it get another magnitude more confused. Bubbles and SB Bombs (null sec only), ECM bursts, Smart Bombs etc. Oxide Nation - Minmatar FW - Low Sec PvP - Euro TZ - New Player Friendly Contact: Major Trant In game channel: FeO Public Recruitment thread: Oxide Nation |

Oh, we this makes a lot more sense. Thank you 3 for your time. You state that people who cap transfer and rep do not get on kill reports? Well looks like support people must be noble. |

Well looks like support people must be noble. there are plans to implement some kind of 'was also there' for people who did not participate in hostilities, but as of now only hostile acts (damage, EWAR etc.) are in the kill mails.

As SmilingVagrant implied, some battle reports are completely indescipherable because of 3rd parties, friendly fire, area of effect modules, etc. The battle of Asakai in particular was a mess of epic proportions. The best you can expect to get out of that is "who died".
Side note about forum rules, by the way:
Quote:34. Posting of kill reports outside of the Crime & Punishment forum channel is prohibited.
More often than not, posts of this nature are made with inflammatory intent and are designed to promote trolling and flaming. Therefore, the posting of links to kill reports from any third party site, or the direct copy-pasting of kill reports from in game is prohibited on all forum channels of the EVE Online Forums, with the exception of the Crime & Punishment Channel. This thread is a bit of an exception because it's just about interpreting the web format of a battle report. In general, though, while discussion of fights is perfectly fine, posting links to kill reports or pasting killmails from in game is not allowed.
