Caldari are supposed to be long range experts, but because of defenders and other factors missiles perform better at short range. Actually, Gallente were supposed to be the close range specialists, this includes drones (as drones function best if you can release them near your target). Originally the Megathron had bonus only to blasters, and not rails. So we now have this perverse situation: Gallente: Supposed close range specialist, but their tier 2 bs is really the top "longer" range boat with rails, while falling behind close range. Caldari were supposed to be the long range specialists (and many caldari ships have range bonuses), but their battleships are the ones on top close range, while not being that great long range (at least compared to the thron). I think Minmatar was supposed to be flexible, but with a leaning towards long range (Range bonus on phoon). However they have a top (possibly behind Raven, but armor tanked AC-tempest is damn near) close range BS, while falling behind railgun Mega in longer range. Amarr is probably medium range, which is abit sucky for the others, since medium range is where combat starts most of the time. Everything seems to end up ass backwards to the way it was intended. Well, it sorta ended up as the rail-platform now that blasters suck badly, but as I said, history, and other stats suggest different (eg. the Megathron having good speed and low weight compared to caldari/amarr ships, which is what a close range ship would need to get the fight into its optimal fast).
