Well more or less..
Hi guys,
So lemme begin by telling a story, earlier today i was in my hawk doin a medium plex when a pirate merlin showed up,naturally i figured i can take him,and i did.. next thing i know same pilot returned but this time with a vengeance ( the ship but i agree name fits for the task :). ) so knowing that from preveous engagements hawk vs vengeance from my past experiance,i would lose the fight.. so i figured why lose a ship for nothing... So i ran away. Now , after i ran that said pilot ofc started ranting in local and i stood and smiled and colected few tears before i left system.. but what bothered me is the fact he said i was a coward(he used alot of words to imply that) so my question to u guys is ,was i really a coward?or did i just do a smart move and avoided a loss by thinking?
What would the l33t pvp'er have done? |

You were, of course, not a coward for avoiding a fight you knew you were going to lose when the enemy brought a counter to your ship.
On the other hand, is there a word for someone who has to come to the forums and seek validation for their perfectly rational actions? If you're looking for a label, that'd be it. http://eveprincessbride.wordpress.com/ |

You engaged Merlin with a Hawk, but when a ship that was closer matched to you (I'd still put money on the hawk to be honest) showed up you ran away. I think you're justified in being made fun of to be honest if you'll only engage if you are in a ship that way outclasses your opponent |

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't see the Vengeance as a hard counter to the Hawk. Sure, it would probably exploit the EM/Ex hole in your shields, but you're bonused to Kinetic (not the strongest resist for the Vengeance, either).
In more visible terms, it looks like you used an AF to gank a frig, but ran off when you were both of the same class of ship. Perhaps you should evaluate what it is, exactly, that you're living for another day to fight? If your goal is to score obvious ganks, then you're not really going to get a lot of props in local. I would've taken the fight. Sure, you may think you are going to lose, but you'll never find out unless you take the risk. By giving him a good fight, regardless of victory or defeat, both of you will leave with a greater understanding of how to manage such a situation, and become better pilots because of it. Not to mention you'll both have fun. I wear my goggles at night.

1. I did not gank the merlin, the merlun ganked me so i retaliated.
2. He came back in a vengeance,a ship that has best rezist in explosiv and kinetic + 4% bonus rezist pet AF lvl.
3. I.ve fought several vengeances in my hawk before,i.ve lost all.

"It depends". Eve is rock, paper, scissors (excepts for Supers). If you have rock and you know for a fact your opponent has paper, you'd be stupid for not running away. However, hawk vs veng is usually more like rock vs rock unless there is something you knew that you didn't share with us (ie he had boosts, etc). Sounds like a 50/50 fight to me. Meh.
This whole conversation is going in the direction of philosophy and messy subjectivity. You should be doing whatever is most fun for you. You don't owe anyone in this game anything. Not a "good fight", fairness, or anything else. I would suggest that you avoid basing your decisions on what you think others will think of you.
If getting the first kill on the Merlin, then avoiding a fight to make sure you preserve your Hawk hull is the most fun for you, then that's what you should be doing.
If gambling your ship on a fight you're not relatively confident you will win is fun, then you should do that.
However, I still believe that asking other people how you should feel about yourself is a mistake. What you do in a video game, and how others react to it, should not define whether or not you view yourself as a coward.
You pay to play Eve (in $ if you subscribe, in time/effort if not). The only real question is whether you're getting your money's worth, and the only person who can answer that question is you. http://eveprincessbride.wordpress.com/ |

Stop being bad?
You've got more range than a Vengeance and with a dual MASB your burst tank is something in the realm of 400DPS depending on your fit. You're welcome to run away from any fight you want, just as everyone is welcome to make fun of you for only engaging opponents in lower tier ships.

You were not a coward per se. You just didn't have good experiences against a previous Vengeance and decided not to play the odds again (regardless of how they may or may not have been stacked).
Pretty much all fights are based on this way of thinking. Can I take him/her? What was the previous experience like? Do I have better skills/boosts/experience/odds in my favor that I didn't last time? Is my ship better equipped to take on the possible fits that the person might have? Can/Should I employ different tactics? etc.
However... the danger of using past experiences for reference is that you get stuck in "set" ways of doing things which restricts your adaptability and/or ability to objectively gauge a possible fight (i.e. you run away from fights/conflicts you could have won). My personal solution to this is to get roaring drunk, undock in the ship you like most at that moment, and then fight any fight where the odds are "not too bad" (50:50... 60:40... 70:30... MAYBE 80:20... all not in your favor). Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Sometimes, the oldest and most simple of things can be the most elegant and effective. |

No but getting trolled so hard in local you came to make a post like this does.
One of the most important parts of pvp is being either a good troll or not falling for one, yep you were a skeredy cat who ran away but you're really shouldn't let someone get you so uptight you need to come to the forums for everyone else to tell you the same, just pretend you had a phone call in RL so had to leave. |

:) you were plexing. So the aim is to 'win' the plex by capping it and getting the LP. You defended it against the merlin all good. Ran from the veng that you thought would win so you can plex somewhere else.
Did you get the plex in the end or did you leave the system and someone else got the plex?
All in all it depends on what your goals were. If you got thelp from the plex and ran good job. Achieved your goal and lost nothing. That is the Way, the Tao.

You figured you'd lose, you withdrew........ nout wrong with that...............
If you posted that you engaged when you thought you would lose and you did lose, then the same people would call you a fool for engaging.
Though, like someone else suggested, why seek confirmation. If you're happy with your actions in a solo engagement, who cares what anyone else thinks...........

You are not a coward. You got a kill and then didn't derp. You made the correct decision. Eve isn't about honor, skill, isk or any rubbish like that - it's about not derping as much as the next guy.
I dunno what a leet pvper would do but I can tell you the options I would consider/use if I wanted to take that fight.
1. Sell the Hawk.
2. Buy a Hookbill.
3. Kill Vengeance.
OR
1. Fly with a few friends.
2. Kill Vengeance.
OR
1. Bring ECM alt.
2. Kill Vengeance.
OR
All of the above at the same time.
If you want to get your soul to heaven, trust in me. Now don't judge or question. You are broken now, but faith can heal you. Just do everything I tell you to do. (Opiate - Tool) |

There is no shame in being a coward!
As a little tip on the side: When running away NEVER look back and check if you are still being chased. All you risk are valuable seconds that can end up getting you caught (and if hes still behind you, you should have been running not looking). Run until you are fully out of breath and can't run no more (or similar reasons). All you wasted is a bit of running time. |

Yes you are because you took a fight largely in your favor, and ran away from one where the terms were more or less equal. Then again, sometimes I'll do the same if I see the match-up as one sided or I don't want to risk losing the ship.

You are right if you follow what "The Art of War" says. You are possibly wrong if you follow a knight's rules. Only you know if you did right or wrong. I would never care what others think about my actions in EvE.
By the way, if you go to low sec you know what you will find. So should you when you come to the forum to ask such a thing. Heck, I bet you don't even need to ask, you should know what the answers will generally look like. |

I think Sun Tzu said something about water flowing somewhere, having alts in adjacent systems for precise intel, and having cloaked loki boosted alts ready to go so that you know yourself better than the enemy knows you. |

Depends... did you decline the fight because you were certain you would lose?
or did you decline the fight because you weren't certain you would win?
I'm a big fan of taking risks with my ships. Like trying to solo a vaga or cane in a taranis. These are things I know can be done, but are often difficult or dangerous to pull off. I don't know how your hawk was fit, but a dual asb hawk can often out tank and out dps the dual rep vengeance. At the same time, it really depends on your fits (and if either of you have boosters). It would be an interesting fight IMO, and I probably would have taken it.
Many of EvE's player base won't take a fight unless they are certain they can win. Some call that smart play, some call that cowardly play. I consider it a fowl disease corrupting EvE's small gang PvP atmospheres. |

I think that warping of can be a smart decision. It depends on the mental state you are in, if you are sober, drunk, happy, angry, etc. and it depends alot on your experience. You might fight a ships where everyone will tell you it'll be an easy fight.... only to see your ship go up in flames or the other way round. If you have bad experiences fighting against certain ship types it might mean two things: A) You need to rework your strategy of engaging them B) You need to rework your fitting Now depending on the way you fit your hawk and the way the vengeance is fitted the result can differ a lot. If the pilot knew exactly what you were flying and how - warping off was the smart choice in my book :) There is a difference between taking a fight you might lose and taking a fight where the odds are clearly stacked against you. No need to hand out "free" killmails :) |

People engage for a bunch of different reasons, including but not limited to "good fights", probing to gauge the enemy's reaction, baiting, or other tactical or strategic reasons. Sometimes the objective of the encounter is actually accomplished before the first weapons are triggered. And in many such cases, it's more sensible to withdraw from the fight than to lose resources you might be able to save for another engagement.
It's like the old philosopher said: One must know when to hold them; One must know when to fold them; One must know when to walk away; One must know when to run. "Nevertheless a prince ought to inspire fear in such a way that, if he does not win love, he avoids hatred..." - Niccolo Machiavelli-á |

Really glad that you have high regards for e-honor Fateamendabletochange, and so easily call someone else "f@ggot" and "your mom is a ***** (paraphrasing)". Really honorable.
If someone chooses not to fight you, especially when his goal is plexing, and the fact that you already fought him before, having an unfair intel advantage, doesn't mean you were the better pvper.
If I kill someone then I see him again in another ship, unless it is something I recognize immediately, my first instinct will always be to disengage, it is just logical. He has the advantage of knowing exactly what to bring to beat me (otherwise he is an idiot), and he will be a better mental and strategic position, as he already thought this fight through and knows exactly what he needs to be doing.
Now don't get me wrong in EVE if someone chooses to not fight you have a right to call them out and maybe have a little fun with them, but that certainly doesn't make them a "f@ggot". It is important how you also make fun of him, because there is a very fine line between old fashioned sarcasm, and giving a bucket full of tears (which you did).
And I love it when frigate fliers think they are risk takers, don't get me wrong it is fun and requires a lot of skills, but you aren't risking much, so take it down a notch with the risk taking. Flying atrons and merlins is not risk taking, hunting in machariels on the other hand..... |
