Would you pay a bit more for a PLEX if you knew CCP would donate the extra amount to space exploration research?
I was lucky enough to get one of CCP's four free tickets to the Starship Congress, currently going on in Dallas, TX. Being here has made me wish there was a more concrete way for me to actively contribute to the research going on in space propulsion, closed-loop habitats, and other related topics.
So I was thinking: if CCP introduced a sort of 'premium' PLEX, which would cost $25 instead of $20, with $5 for each one bought going to an organization such as Icarus Intersteller (or some other group dedicated to space exploration research), would you buy one? They would likely sell for more isk in-game, but I, for one, would gladly pay 650 mil isk or more to PLEX my account if I knew some money was going to research. Hell, if that were the case I'd gladly PLEX all my friends accounts too.

Exactly, why force other people to donate to research they may care nothing about just to buy PLEX?
No one is going to start buying PLEX simply because now NASA gets some extra money when they could just donate without needing to buy PLEX.
The only effect this would have is lowering the amount of PLEX sold, thus less money for CCP for no reason. |

Mostly because I have a decent amount of isk but very little disposable cash. This would essentially be a way to support research with isk, while not really costing CCP anything extra (except for the time it would take to add the item into the database, update the website, and cut a check every once in a while.)

I certainly would pay more for such a PLEX, provided there was transparency in the process. I'd feel a lot beter if I could see some numbers from CCP showing where the money went.
I should also mention that CCP is a major sponsor of the Icarus Interstellar Starship Congress going on this weekend. Good on them! |

No, thank you. We already have a nice planet we can live on and still we fail to give everyone a good life here. Give too much money to space exploration and all you get is something like in the sci-fi film Elysium, where rich bricks live in space and everyone else gets left behind on Earth. Loss is meaningful. Therefore is the loss of meaning likewise meaningful. It is the source of all trolling. |

Not really. The company I work for donates to the charities of our own choosing each year. All I do is pick 3 charities ($1,000 per charity, I guess I could choose more than 3 but meh) (Boobies [Cancer], Cancer Research, and SETI).
Maybe I'll pick a different space affiliated foundation what with Congress and their earmarking loveliness. "But my favourite visual experience in Eve was a pipebombing run on a digital projector. I'd be very annoyed if the donation went to NASA. I'd much rather my donation go to one of the very deserving private organizations pushing the ball forward on space travel. NASA is too focused on "quick" achievable goals and very little big picture, though that's more a product of their risk-averse funding source than anything else. |

Yeah that makes it far more understandable. Regardless, it kind of forces it on everyone else who buys PLEX which I don't approve of. |

The idea wouldn't be to replace PLEX, but to offer another option for players wanting to make advanced space exploration a reality. After all, CCP is all about advancing this kind of research.
For those only concerned with the cheapest PLEX (the vast majority of players, I am sure - and there is nothing wrong with that), they can buy a normal PLEX. But for people like me, with a bit more isk than we need, which we'd love to use for a good cause, the new PLEX would be an option.

That's odd though... why use plex at all? Just make a donation with your name on it directly.
If you think you're going to buy 4 plex in the next 6 months, just give the foundation $20.
(using isk would come straight out of ccp's coffers which I'm sure they have already earmarked for specific donations etc). Again, this would be for people who don't have much money but have enough isk to pay for the game using PLEX. And it wouldn't take any money out of CCP's coffers since for every PLEX bought on the market by me, someone somewhere paid CCP real money for it.

Edit: It really doesn't matter how you spin it. CCP loses money, because they don't get to keep the money somebody gave them. Your goodwill of donating ISK seems kind of ridiculous to me, even if you had actual good intentions. Blind, but good. |

With all their money, CCP can just make a bulk donation to one of those organizations.
Why should they shill their customers for even more cash just to "look good" to the rest of the world ?
Why rely on customers when they could already donate at least a small portion of the past decade's bottom line ? |

Pay more for a PLEX ? No. Given the upcoming games in the market prices may even have to fall slightly to keep up with the competition (depending on how successful those are of course).

Instead of charging extra for a PLEX to donate some money to NASA, why not have CCP make a special edition something or other, that might be worth getting, and the proceeds from that can go to NASA. That way, people who are interested in helping NASA could participate if they were interested, and everyone else would pay regular price for the PLEX.
Maybe a special addition package of kewl l3wtz. I'm thinking along the lines of a background (as an example)? So that when you pose your toons for a portrait, you can get a NASA logo back ground... People can see it in forums.... They would say stuff like, "Hey! That player got a NASA logo background! How cool! He/She must have bought it to help NASA with a donation. How cool!"
Also a special edition T-Shirt, a cool Jacket with the NASA logo on it. - All for your toons, of course. So, the package of loots would include a special edition background that you can use anytime (forever - it had better not expire) to pose all of your toons in front of, a T-Shirt with the NASA logo for all of the toons on your account, and a Jacket with the NASA logo (small one) in front and (a big one) on the back of the jacket too, again for all of the toons in your account.
So, how much would you pay (Proceeds going to NASA) for that? $5.00 (U.S.) for one item of your choice, $10.00 (U.S.), for two items of your choice, $15.00 (U.S.) for all three items in the package?
But I say take that a step further. Next year, it would be a package of items, with say, JAXA's logo. The year after that, it would be whatever Great Britain's space agency uses for a logo, then Russia, Germany, etc. There are space programs all over the world, and EVE online is a global game. So, it would be cool for players from around the globe to get such a cool package of loots and to get a chance to donate to their favorite space programs. Or players can donate to them all and collect all of the different logos for their toons. Except maybe China's space program. They're aiming to militarize space and claim the moon as Chinese territory. Blasted Communists! (I'm joking! I'm joking! I'm only half joking...)

I'm missing the part where players can actually use ISK instead of money to make a donation (since this is the OP's main 'problem', being low on disposable cash).
I like the rest of the idea though... Since (in this case) NASA would be advertising this way, the price of the PLEX can be lowered for all us pilots and the difference will be paid by NASA as a returned favor for the advertisement.

It IS actually possible, the only problem they have, is power generation. In previous calculations, we'd need the power off an entire black hole, in order to generate a warp bubble and actually warp space. A Mexican dude has come up with new calculations about 3 years ago, that suggest that it would be possible to do it with far far far less power, yet still a LOT of power. I am all for shoveling money towards people here that could use it, but frankly, there will always be poverty. Should we never try to do anything in space just because there are things we could do here too? What about the huge advancements in daily life (e.g. medical science) that have already come directly from NASA research?
This thread has strayed a bit from my original idea, but I don't see how it would affect anyone that didn't want to participate.

I'd be pissed if i was forced to donate to NASA when ever I use a plex but I'd have no issues with supporting smaller space research companies who are willing to take the risks and put humans on mars, or heck even the bloody moon. |

Indeed ... one of their best shows ever.
As for NASA, well, when and if another Congress ever sits and takes manned spaceflight seriously again it will only be because "push has come to shove"... racing and trying to catch up.
Again.

If you have more time than money then start a fundraiser for what you want to donate money to and get at it.
There will only always be poverty while there is greed and oppression.

I have some kind of flackey memory that NASA can't accept donations etc as they're a government agency or something. Also, CCP are Icelandic, so no doubt that'd add some kinda hindrance to it.
But, sure, it'd be nice to know that some money was going to something cool like that. Better would be knowing that CCP putting the money into making the game better and not over extending themselves to the point of bankruptcy :) |

Stop playing eve, get a job and donate the money you make to space research... and stop asking for my money you filthy beggar. I'm a relatively respectable citizen. Multiple felon perhaps, but certainly not dangerous. |

Next "PLEX For": Real-Life Space Travel. You may gain the knowledge, but you will lose your belief, with all its mystery and comfort. If there was proof, absolute and certain, there is an afterlife, why not quit this life, and be done with it? Ponder about these things all your life, and you're a philosopher. Compress these ponderings into a couple of pages, and you'll go mad. |
