Well, speaking as one who has participated in Eve since before it retailed, I want to add my voice in support of the Ships Have Crew side. There's been some of the early details of the game that are "assumed" in later works that have fallen by the wayside. They aren't explicity referred to because they've been there for so long that it just isn't seen as necessary.
Quite frankly, if it takes a dev coming out and saying, "This is how it is" then you're probably going to sit there and argue with them about it, as well.
I guess it all comes down to, do you accept the prevailing paradigm or not? I'm not going to say if not, get the heck off of the server 'cause you're lagging me for nothing, but I will say that arguing against it on the forums like this isn't going to score any points.
Yes, it does matter whether ships have crew. It's continuity in these things that help keep tie the game together. My Apoc BPO builds the exact same thing that yours does (if either of us had one, that is). And fine details like that do matter to the rp community.
The problem, I think, is how it is so easy to get into the game without knowing much at all about the backstory, about the world we supposedly inhabit together. We are an imagined community, and come from varied backgrounds and experiences that bring us to different conclusions. Some of these conclusions are accepted by the larger community, some are not. The issue of ships and crew is one of those conclusions that one may not find information on until long after one has already formed a mental picture of what the ship is like, what space is like.
Knowing your bs has 6000+ crew is a LOT different than knowing that you are the only one at risk. If you are an rper that makes all the difference in the world. And by the time one gets to the forums and reads posts like this, your basic understanding of what kind of person your character is can be established enough that it is very difficult to absorb this new information.
But that is the way it has been from the beginning. It's there in several of the stories, it's there in the information from the early days, it's there in the hearts and minds of many of us who have played since the beginning. If you can't be convinced, you can't be convinced, but that's how it is. Dismiss it as dogmatic, but that is one of the essences of a shared world.
Pardon the rambling, I gotta get to bed.
