Edited by: Annie 46947 on 01/01/2006 21:36:39 My rational: Sport. Utility. Vehicle.
Ok, utility I can see. You go out haul around a new television set in teh back of your Explorer. Or you go fishing in your Nissan Xterra. You can haul, secure, move people, go offroading. This is good utility.
But Sport? Exactly WTF is sporty about a 7,000 pound Ford Excursion? They handle poorly, accelerate poorly, brake poorly, they're top heavy, they get HORRIBLE gas milage. This is some kind of bad joke. Sure theres about 3 exceptions ...these also came along something like a decade after the headcases came up with this particular marketing fraud.
I imagine you could argue taking your SUV fishing is sports. Thats some serious symantic BS in my book. Noone thinks fishing when they think sports car. Its some hollow attempt at justifying the largest marketing conjob in history.
So I was wondering. Is it possible to sue all the major auto-manufacturers for fraud?
- i removed a bit from teh middle. It was off topic.
FIGHT!

This reminds me of an old political cartoon I saw a while back.
It showed a twisting highway with billboards to the sides of it. The billboards had pictures of SUVs out in the great outdoors, on rocks, meadows, etc, with slogans like "Born to Be Wild," etc. Then on the highway was a long line of SUVs all stopped in traffic. - Proud member of the [23].

For the "sport" part, people take them off-roading. Of course, more people never do anything of the sort with their SUV, too... -Wrayeth

I don't understand this .. it seems like the automobile version of peanut* envy. You have a big car .. I'll have a big car. Let's take up twice the road space burning up more fuel than we really need and run every other ferker off the road.
You'll never catch me driving a tank when an austin mini will do.
In the UK - things are congested enough on the roads without this kind of crap.
SUVS .. I hate em. -TT

what i want to know is why does something like the BMW X5 or the mercedes M-Class say "Not for Offroad Use" in the manual, how the hell can an SUV not be for offroad use when thats one of the reasons for having 4WD. my Chevy S-10 offroads just fine and its 10 years old, kinda silly when a 2006 BMW X5 says it cant in the manual.

I drive to work everyday in a 4WD pickup with a 5.7 liter engine, I do it because I can...
P.S. I wanted the 7.4 liter engine when I bought my truck, but their were none available, maybe my next truck will have one

It was a tax dodge, pure and simple, from what I read. Farming vehicles, like trucks, are exempt from some tax in the US - so the manufacturers get to make them cheaper by using a truck chassis with a different body on it. And then sell for the same inflated prices as ordinary road vehicles. After that it was just clever marketting helped ably along by sheep-like consumer mentality, and the roads are full of pointless, environmentally unsound SUVs.
But that's the point of marketing - to sell us stuff we don't need at any cost. I'm with Bill Hicks on the marketing issue

Well not to add to the american bashing, but unless im mistaken they are the only people who produce cars the size of small houses, every now and then i see a chevy thats so big it nearly takes up more than one lane of our roads. They are honestly 1.5x the size of cars made anywhere else.
The reason is the american culture in general is ....larger in size than the norm and so they need larger cars, and as someone before stated theres a mentailty that a larger car is more safe than a small one...which isnt really true.
No american bashing there, just the truth.

The US is the symbol of the western world, so bashing of the western world naturally slaps the US in the face. Of course, it is not America's fault that Sweden is importing American culture and ideals, but I still.
Cars overall are bull**** (not just SUVs), and too bad for the US, they are the face of the automobile evolution despite how the rest of the world contributed pretty much the same to history. I suppose that is the price to pay for being the loudest parrot in the cage...

Well they I read an article about the Porche SUV where they tested it and asked the question: "What is the purpose of this car?"
what they concluded was that since you had to buy extra equipment for more then +200% the cost of the original car for it to even be able to go slightly offroad, the thing they could say in its defence and the only thing it had going for it was that it had increased Porches profit in Sweden by 300%.

You got to admit that its fascinating how good those marketing types are. They've got people thinking that attacking the idea of SUVs is attacking the idea of America. My neighbour has an SUV, and im in the suburbs of London, UK. I like to call him 'berk' in an effectionate voice. Anyways, this SUV thing is just a trend, it'll start dieing out as the oil prices start getting higher and higher. ---- Nifty |

My uncle recently bought a real old-timer range rover. The thing is ******* huge. It swallows more then double the gas I spend driving, so he put it on LPG. Works perfectly, is cheaper and doesn't use that much. I've even read on the internet that they are working on a hydrogen SUV.
Personally, I just like the look and confort of an SUV. American or not, I don't give a ****.
