Man. It's a game. Some day it will just be shut down in any case. You will have nothing left then. How about that? Why play at all?
Omg everything is so futile *bursts into tears* Let's all cancel our accounts.

Originally by: Tomkins Yesterday morning before work, I purchased my first month of EVE. I was excited to continue training skills and making money after a fun 2 week trial. My friend who previously played EVE attempted to reactivated his character to find it gone. He said he read in the website that accounts are deleted after 6 months of inactivity. I told him he was wrong and there is no way his account is gone. Then today I decided to check it out while traveling to pick up a newly purchased skill. To my dismay regardless of time spent and monthly fees payed, he was correct. I cannot with an open heart play what I see to be an excellent game, knowing that despite the fact that I could spend years devoloping my character, if I decide to cancel I can never reactivate past a measly 6 months. I have played many MMOGs and never heard of an account going bad. This is what I'd expect from a free service. Luckly, my other friends that I convinced to download the trial to check it out never got monitarily involved. If the $20 I spent was worth the trouble to get it back for the 29 days I'm not going to play this month, I'd try to get it refunded.
Good luck, have fun, and may your accounts never become inactive.
Worst.quit.ever.
Also I got a friend who tried EVE right after it went public, to play again for about a month back in october. His orginal character still existed after being gone for a year or so, but you'll find WoW and other MMOs give something like 1-2 months before they delete inactive accounts. Please, no political remarks. - Laqum |

I reactivated about a week ago. No issues, and that is with around 2 years of inactivity.
No. Sounds to me like a forgotten ID and/or password without the wanting to look silly.

Not to play. Not to advance your character. Just to keep it from being deleted while you live part of your life. NO. Your also not going to start a new character.
Ok, answer me this: If you account was deleted today, would you restart?
Im in the military, deployed overseas. I still play EVE.
Where, may i ask, are you stationed?

Originally by: Tomkins Answer 127 in the support section. Question For how long are accounts stored on the server after they have been cancelled?
Answer If you decide to cancel your account, then your characters and all their equipment and skills are preserved on our server for six months from the day that your account's subscription period ends.
By all means I hope it is false.
And for all you flamers, you haven't answered: would you recreate?
Yes i would. And I did. The same happened to my previous main character... I tried reactivating and couldnt for the life of me get it to work, so I assumed I got deleted. It doesnt take too long to get yourself back up to speed the second time around. You should know exactly what skills you need and what is a waste of time, money and implants will flow, and heck.... the main fun of the game as I see it is the social aspect. Even bumming around in a half assed cruiser is fun, so long as you are in a corp and playing with friends. That'll keep you entertained while you re-uberize yourself. Of which, as previously stated, wont take as long as you think as you are more focused this time. If your friend lost 20mill skillpoints, well, my condolences.
Give eve a second chance. As a matter of fact I am a soldier and will spend months at a time away from eve. I will, however, set bloody long skills training and keep my subscription going. A few months at 15USD/month isnt much.. As somebody said, Its fairly common for MMO's to clean up inactive accounts. Regularly I receive warnings about old characters about to be deleted in >insert games here<, and if i really care I log in to keep the character alive for six more months. It happens, and CCP isnt exactly the devil for cleaning house. Im sorry he didnt have the foresight, but im sure his character is somewhere..

The reason behind the 6 months then delete policy is so that CCP can delete old accounts if they need to. It doesn't mean they have exercised that right yet.
In fact I imagine before they do delete over 6 month old inactivate accounts they'll first send out a mass email telling people that "we will be purging all accounts that have been inactive for over 6 months. Don't be the one to lose your place in eve, reactive your account today" and thus get a month signup from a large number of inactive players :P
My account was inactive for over 6 months, reactivated fine. My mates account has been inactive well over 8 months and he still reactivated it fine, once he'd remembered his password and account name that was :P
Keenon: "After sitting in the system for FIVE hours without even a (go away)"...

CCP i don't think have deleted much, if any accounts/characters from the database.
Well i lie they did it was the day after armageddon. back in the days of the beta. did you ask when he played last? For all you know he could have spelled the character name wrong or lost username and password
It turthfully is the LAMEST Excuse to quit EVER.
And i know tons of people whos accounts have went inactive for more than a year and them come back with everything. If that is such a big deal to you/your friend simply write a petition to actually find out what happened to it.
Becuase they may delete it, but there always is a paper-trail.
I would actually like to see a Dev responce about How many accounts they have actually been deleted (Apox.
PS CCP will not refund you also as the UELA states, why don't you have fun playing eve anyways

Not true, WoW and others keep them. The only one that deletes is Final Fantasy XI....level 40 Dark Knight, RIP :(.

I was gone for 11 months, came back and everything was there, even some extra stuff in my inventory.
Most MMO's won't delete you, but say that they can.
In COH now, they won't delete your characters, but if you haven't been paying for 90 days, they can put your character names up for grabs. Cool Unused Super Hero names are really hard to come by over there.

This would be the first time ever in eve I have heard of someone's char getting deleted. I personally quit for about 6 months and came back to find my char fine and dandy.
And if you're crying about a 6 month inactive period try playing ffxi since the release date and not wanting to cancel your account because you'll lose your HQ staves, monster signa, +1 gear up to level 69 for multiple jobs, other random nice EQ, millions of gil, weeks/months of accumulated crafting time, months upon months logged online, whatever after ONLY 3 MONTHS...
Since I started with UO back in the day (before UO3D) Eve is the only mmo I've ever played that had a policy of never dropping characters forever and ever and ever amen. And almost every mmo has a standard 3 month inactive policy.
If they've changed something you'd think they'd have posted a huge disclaimer somewhere at one point or another.

Oveur HAS STATED in several threads and several time that CCP HAS NEVER DELETED A ACCOUNT OR CHARACTERS period. There has never be any purges ect done period. What you have said is a load of crap. Would be nice if the forums had a search button. Hint hint mods/devs. That way i could link you right too it.

I suggest to Ask A Question through the website and ask for help on behalf of your friend (who probably can't log in to do it himself). As far as I know CCP hasn't deleted any accounts yet and your friends would be the first.

Come on now guys, no need to continue belittling the parent poster. It's an understandable frustration yes, but I'll agree a horrible excuse to quit EVE. But, it's been explained multiple times and I'm sure he understands the reality of the situation.
Let's not push him away by showing the EVE community's bad side, okay?
Welcome to EVE, Tomkins :)

A search button would generate additional server lag due to the sheer amount of requests it would have to process. For now use http://www.google.com in conjunction with site:eve-online.com
Example: site:eve-online.com "closed account"
Would return the result reguarding player-closed accounts, leading you to the page that states
Quote: All information about your characters and their belongings is stored on our servers. If your account is temporarily disabled for any reason, this data will be preserved for several months. You can reopen your account at any time through the Account Management page and restart your subscription.
Therefore without knowing first-hand how the developers handle closed accounts, it's natural for a rookie to follow the documentation of "several months". ----------------------

I had to stop playing for around a year due to illness, my char is still here fine and dandy, also to say no other mmo does this blah blah is simply BS, FFXI you get deleted after 3 months as does your activation code, so you actualy have to BUY A NEW GAME to play again.......
Also have to agree, this is the most stupid quit reason I have EVER heard lol.

hell, my old beta character is still in the game (looked him up in search), if they didnb't delete that yet, I don't think they have deleted much (btw I remember the beta purge, god damn was I happy, stupid broken market back then, either you were rich, or you were poor, and if you were rich iskies were easy to make, and if you were poor iskies were uber hard to make :P sigh the olds days)

Interesting. I've still got a character on a secondary account I havent used for over a year! He's still active?
Maybe your friend forgot his login name to reactivate his account? I do hope he realises he has to pay to play if he doesn't want to start the trial/new account?
I used to play Ultima Online, they deleted accounts after a while. Its fair enough or the database becomes way too over burdened.
Good luck in your endeveours.

I'd be seriously surprised if any account data would be deleted. Returning players are a good, reliable source of income, more so when the game ages and there start to be a good number of ex- players that you can tempt with comeback offers and all. After a bit, returning players can even be more than new players influx, just check classics like UO and daoc. Usually, the cost of mantaining user information of offline users is trivial, both in terms of processing power and money, and in a game where level = time like this deleting account would mean cutting most if not all chances of having returning players.
Of course, this is just theory. If I was in your friend, I'd contact the customer support: what I witnessed in the past, often after big patches (expansions, etc) the user database go thru some processing-expensive conversion to fix bugs or add new attributes. Sometimes offline characters are excluded from this conversion to save time, to be done when the account is reactivated - sometimes reactivation procedures are bugged :)

This is a commmon tactic used by many and now your friend is using it on you. You may not have heard of this tactic.
I have.
Hi, I am Megadon and I'm here to help you.
He knows you like Eve, but he is upset that if you both play it, you will OMGWTFBBQX2 him everyday of his Eve life and embarrass him horribly.
What can he do?
He is such a looser, he knows there is no way he can ever attain your excellence, so he pull's out the old....
"OMG THEY OMGWTFBBQEDX10 deleted my Character, there is no way you can play now dude because you are my friend!"
You, being the decent excellent friend you are, say of course not! I will not play because I hold friendship higher than anything!
He of course will now start playing Eve and many months later, after he has acquired BILLIONS of Isk, and MILLIONS of skill points will some day say,
"Hey, errr, I decided to open another account and I've been kinda playing Eve, maybe we should play together (giggle giggle hehe hehe)".
Don't fall into his evil trap.
