Okay I am brand new to the game please forgive my ignorance but I am looking for the best ship to solo mine with maybe one or two other people. Obviously by reading the forums a hauler with lots of space 4,000+ would be an option but I am also looking for something with minial protection that might be able to fight off a pirate or two with some drones. Can any give me an idea of the type of ship I am looking for?
I am caldari.

I hear that Destroyers are good to begin with. Not really expensive, able to fit... 4 named miners? And some guns to boot.
Otherwise, an Osprey works.

Thank you. I will check into that. Sounds like a great plan. Anything else anyone could suggest that they have had success with?

One of the best starts to build your wallet is with the Caldari Cruiser Osprey it has good bonus's or used to pre RMR.... dont think they have changed it. Decent alround miner though and got me and probably a few others started.
Other option is the Minny Scythe both of these ships are definately the way to go single mining imho.

As Caldari you should take the osprey with 3 miners and a launcher + 4 light drones. Fit a lage shield extender if you skills alow you. This should give you a ship that can mine in 0.5 and kill all NPC rats without any problems. I would put some cargo expanders into the lows, or you might not be able take tha ore of even one cycle.
I for my self use the Vexor for mining. If you ever come to lonetrek you might see my in Litiura.

Osprey does wonderously well for mining. It was my mining ship for a very long time(then I got barges :) )and it is starting to become my mining ship again, as I move into lower security systems for mining where I don't want to risk my barge.
I've been using my Osprey to mine in a couple .2 and .3 systems. It does decently fine against the frig class NPCs, but I run when I see a cruiser or battlecruiser spawn.
I've got it set up like so:
Highs:
3 x Miner IIs
Assault Missile Launcher with Bloodclaws
Medium:
Large Shield Extender
Lows:
WCS(don't need it in .5 or better)
Expanded Cargo Hold I (cuz I'm lazy)
CPU upgrade(to make it all fit)
